Kira Costa - she will be wearing a new jersey this year after a transfer for her 2002-2003 senior year - The Central Section star is off to a great start this season with a Third place effort of 12-4 at the Pole Vault Summit this past weekend in Reno, Nevada - She is the equal #7 Prep Pole Vault Returnee in the entire nation with a best of 12-06 from the 2002 outdoor season.

Below, she talks about the competition, a college choice, and her new school (San Joaquin Memorial in Fresno)

"Reno was great this year! With 5 of us attempting 12'10, the competition was extreme. It really helps to jump high bars with a good group of vaulters. Being the first "meet" of the year, my nerves were in overdrive and I had to force myself to run rhythmically and slow down to keep my jump under control. I was confident going in because of my consistent training this year. I started strength, speed, and conditioning in August and began jumping once a week in November. However, my jump is no where near perfection and I am really excited to see how I develop this year. With Reno over, it's also time to start training for my other events like hurdles, long jump, and shot put that are in the heptathlon. A lot of our school meets this year are on dirt facilities so I'll be working on my throwing events more often! (No pole vault :( ) I am also excited to tell DyeStatCal that I have given a verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley for the heptathlon/pole vault and can't wait for next year. With the transfer I made this year, I know the transition to CAL will be much easier. San Joaquin Memorial is a private, college preparatory school in Fresno and is really preparing me for college life! Still maintaining an A-average, I've been working MUCH harder for it! I could not be happier at Memorial. The people are awesome and the education is top-notch (with 98% of SJM grads attending college). Going to a new school also took away the pains of senioritis! But between now and CAL, I've got plenty to keep me occupied!" - Kira Costa
