Long Beach Wilson travels to Montgomery Indoor Invitational - Sat 1/11/03

Prince George Sports and Learning Complex - Landover, Maryland

Starting out the Unattached Indoor season, the girls from Long Beach Wilson are scheduled to travel to the Montgomery Indoor Invitational at the super Prince George Sports and Learning Complex (site of the Nike Indoor National competition in March) in Maryland next weekend. There should be super competition for the group from Long Beach, with Eleanor Roosevelt (Greenbelt, Maryland), Largo (Md), and Western Baltimore (Md) some super returnees for the locals to battle with.

The Eleanor Roosevelt Girls, led by Tiandra Ponteen, a native of St. Kitts, West Indies, and signee at the University of Florida, has 11.94 (100m) - 23.75 (200m) and 54.17 (400m) bests, have already cranked a solo 3:52.8 to lead the nation indoors this winter at the 4x400 distance, and also lead the nation with a fine 4:04.83 for the 1600 meter medley distance (400-200-200-800). Krystal Anyanwu was 56.86 (400m) and 2:14.21 (800) last year for Roosevelt, with Ramona Modeste 42.7 for the 300m hurdles last spring. Roosevelt was the nation's #4 prep 400m relay baton group last spring at 45.91 (2nd Penn Relays), with a 3:44.24 (#7 in nation) for the 4x400 relay. Maryland flyers do not stop there, with Largo (Maryland) the nation's leading prep 4x200 relay team indoors this winter at 1:42.3, with Roosevelt's 1:42.7 in that race for the #2 mark in the country. Largo was 46.77 (among top twenty in entire nation) last year in the 4x100 relay and 3:54.03 in the 4x400 outdooor, with Sirdonea Davis 56.78 (400) back to lead the teams. Western (Baltimore), Maryland, was 3:51.07 in the 4x400 outdoors last spring, with a fine 9:16.74 in the 4x800. Western has Latosha Wallace (55.16 400m) and soph Rokesha Williams (58.18) leading the 2003 group!

Asked about the group from Wilson, Meet Director Tom Rogers replied, "they have entries in 55m, 55hh, 400m, 800m, mile, 3200m, LJ, 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, and the Distance Medley Relay!" It should certainly be a great experience with some great early season competition for the group from California. Roosevelt is one of the nation's most respected programs, with Largo and Western (Baltimore) fine teams that will be joined by a number of other local schools from Maryland and neighboring states to make up a great early season competition.
