Sequoia Relays 2006
First “Re-Annual” Track & Field Relay Meet
Friday March 24, 2006 -- 4pm

Dear Coach,

I am pleased to extend to your track and field team an invitation to attend the first “Re-Annual” Sequoia Relays 2006. The original Sequoia Relays Track Meet dates back to the 1970’s, where it was a highly competitive twilight relay meet. The meet was a success because it was different than all of the rest (it took place during the evening under the lights!) Teams in attendance came mostly out of the Sequoia Union High School District (Menlo Atherton, Woodside, Carlmont), but would also attract high school teams from around the peninsula like Palo Alto, Gunn, Aragon, San Mateo, Burlingame, and Hillsdale.

The location of this evening/twilight meet will be at Sequoia High School in Redwood City, CA. 3 years ago Sequoia was very lucky to receive an all-weather 8-lane track, sport-turf field, and new aluminum bleachers along the track’s homestretch as you can see below.

Field size will be limited to the first 15 teams! No more! Make your reservation now!! Please confirm ASAP if you would like to participate in this year’s Sequoia Relays to reserve your team’s spot by filling out the RSVP form at the end of this packet.

Place: Sequoia High School, Redwood City, CA (1201 Brewster Ave., Redwood City, CA. 94062)

1. Every event is a relay, requiring 4 participants of the same sex/school (including jumps/throws…except High Jump/ Pole Vault -> team of 3)
2. Winning teams will be determined by adding the 4 times/best marks together.

We have no set time schedule. Announcements, however, will be made to the athletes alerting them of when races/field events will begin. The first running event will begin promptly at 5pm with the girls running first then the boys. We will follow the order of events to conclusion. The meet should be over by 10pm.

Relay Running Events: (5:00 pm)

1. 4 x 100 meter relay
2. Distance Medley (1200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m)
3. 4 x 100/110m shuttle hurdle relay
4. 4 x 800 meter relay
5. Sprint Medley (100m, 100m, 200m, 400m)
6. Weightwomens/Weightmens 4 x 100 meter relay
*(must have thrown the shot or disc in the meet to be eligible)
**(if shot/disc is not complete, this will move to after 4x400)
7. 4 x 400 meter relay

Field Events: (4:00 pm)

1. Throwing Events will begin at 4:00 pm. Competitors will throw in flights by school. Girls will first throw the Shot, F/S boys the Disc. Everyone will have 4 throws. Each athlete will have her/his top mark included as part of their relay team’s total. Totals will be compared, and winners will be determined.

2. Jumping Events will also begin at 4:00 pm. Two pits will be used in the horizontal jumps. The long jump will be contested first on both pits and the triple jump will follow. The girls will first jump using both pits. The F/S boys will follow using both pits, and so on for the Varsity boys. Athletes will jump in flights by school and each jumper will have 4 attempts (except HJ/PV). If a jumper scratches, misses her/his attempt, or if a team only has 3 jumpers, those marks that are legal will be added for the team score.

3. The High Jump will begin at 4:00 pm with the bar at 3’6” for the girls, 4’6” for the boys. The bar will go up 4” at a time till 4’6” (girls)/ 5’6” (boys) where it will then be raised 2” at a time.

4. The Pole Vault will start at 4:00 pm. The bar will be set at 6’0” (girls) 7’0” (boys). The bar will be raised at 1-foot intervals till 8’0” (girls), 11’0” (boys) where it will then be raised in 6” intervals. **The vault official may change this height rule.

5. Remember in all field events each team should have four entrants (except for the High Jump & Pole Vault…where teams will be comprised of 3 members.) The best mark of each entrant will be used to compute the total team mark. Should 1 of your athletes foul all 4 attempts, your teams’ score will be greatly affected and may only be comprised of 3 or fewer marks.

6. Clerk of the course- All teams will be entered and should report to the start line. When called, it is assumed all teams are entered in all relays. Clerk will reseed heats at the line if necessary.

7. Coaches meeting- We will need 1 rep from each team in the center of the field at 4:30 pm to discuss meet format and possible scratches for relay races.

8. Miscellaneous Information- track requires 1/4 inch spikes. Anything larger and an athlete may trip or track may tear. Locker rooms will not be available, but bathrooms will be open behind bleacher areas. There will also be a snack bar behind the bleacher area (soft dinks, water, Powerade, energy bars, hot dogs, candy, etc…).

9. Parking will be in the student parking lot (just off James Ave.) and on the street. Buses may drop off at the track, then park behind school soccer fields on Elwood Street. You may bring your Entry Fee (made out to Sequoia High School Track and Field with you to the meet or mail it to me at school. This meet will be run rain or shine and there will be no refunds of entry fees.
