Meet Preview, Time Schedule, and Heat Sheets

The Twilight Relays consists of six relay races, run at night, under the lights. This year's event has grown from the previous years with more high schools sending their best athletes to showcase sprinters and distance runners. The magic of this event is in runners of all calibers competing as a team in unique relay distances at night.

There will be several heats for each relay race with the faster teams running in the latter heats based on pre meet seeding. The top three team times of all of the heats in each relay race will receive special medals, presented throughout the evening.

The following teams are competing this year:
Albany
Antioch
Bishop O'Dowd
Calaveras
Cardinal Newman
Casa Grande
Castlemont

Encinal

JFK
Marin Academy
Moreau Catholic
Mt. Eden

Girls Sprint Medley Relay (100m-100m-200m-400m)
(Meet Record: 1:51.20, Mt. Eden, 2004)

Over forty relay teams have signed up for this race, making a total of six heats.

The swift and talented Mt. Eden girls are back, looking to break last year's record run. With 2004 state qualifying sprinters Cherrelle Garrette and Cameo Motley leading the way, this squad will be tough to beat. However, NCS powerhouses looking to challenge them include Bishop O'Dowd (who went close to 4:00 minutes in the 4x400 meters last year) and St. Elizabeth.

All teams come in with estimated times within 2 seconds of each other, so it will be a real close one at the line. Look for a winning time around 1:50, which would challenge last year's record.

Boys Sprint Medley Relay (100m-100m-200m-400m)
(Meet Record: 1:33.01, Castlemont, 2004)

This race is packed with talent and very fast teams and stands as another popular relay race, with over 50 teams and seven heats.

Bishop O'Dowd, Casa Grande, and St. Elizabeth (with sub 11 - 100 meter man Adam Barnes) are the race favorites vying for a coveted Twilight Relays medal on the line. This race usually comes down to the final 10 to 50 meters of the 400 meter anchor leg. Times should be in the middle 1:30 range.

Girls Distance Medley Relay (1200m-400m-800m-1600m)
(Meet Record: 12:40.48, Maria Carrillo, 2004)

This will surely be one of the more exciting races of the night as several of the NCS best distance harrier programs will be contending for top distance honors. In cross country, divisions separated these teams, but in track, they get to go head-to-head.

In the first heat, look for 2 time cross country and track (1600 meter) qualifier Ashton LeSieur of Casa Grande (with sub 5 minute 1600 meter credentials) and local stand out Alesandra Rogers of Marin Academy (3rd in D-V cross country 2004 as a Frosh) to anchor and move up their respective teams on the final legs.

The fast heat will be a battle among Bishop O'Dowd (led by 2004 D-IV state cross country champion Ariel Wright who has already run a 5:01 1600 meters this year), Piedmont (with the Sparks twins Naomi, who ran 2:13 last year in the 800 meters and Jehan), University (4th in D-V cross country; Grace Hunter leads the way with low 5:00 minute 1600 meter credentials), and local favorite Redwood HS, with a full cadre of strong distance gals.

Look for several teams to contest the magical sub 13 minute barrier and potentially the meet record set by a very swift Lady Puma squad last year.

14. Antioch A Boys Distance Medley Relay (1200m-400m-800m-1600m)
(Meet Record: 10:48.30, Montgomery, 2003)

This race will likely be a titanic battle between top NCS distance powerhouses. We have three state-qualifying teams and an individual state champion in this race.

There is Piedmont, 5th in the State in Cross Country D-IV (led by Mark Ceraldi, who placed 7th overall), Bishop O'Dowd, 14th in the State Cross Country with NCS champion Ben Gutierrez, and Moreau Catholic, 7th in the State with Tony Quintana (who has already run a 9:05 3000 meters and was 15th in the state meet overall).

Look for individual swift legs from Jake Schmitt of Redwood (D-III overall XC champ with a 9:10 3200 meter PR). St. Joes brings along Neal Rodrigues (8th overall in the State Meet) and Texas transfer 400 meter standout Dominique Simms (49.2 in the 400 meters at the Texas State Meet). For Sacred Heart, David Jackson, CIF 400 meter qualifier (49.64) should provide a very fast second leg.

Expect a lot of lead changes and inner battles during the longer relay legs and very exciting relay handoffs and exchanges. Several teams will vie for a shot of dipping under 11 minutes and could get close to the meet record, set by an outstanding Montgomery distance squad.

Coed 4x200 Meter Relay (girl-girl-boy-boy)
(Meet Record: 1:39.48, Castlemont, 2004)

The two coed races finish off the night and really bring together a great spirit of team camaraderie with girls and boys working together and cheering each other on. At this point in the night, the feeling is going to be electric with nearly 60 teams and 7 heats, and most runners running their second event of the night really ready to put it all on the line. It will likely be a very tight finish with good handoffs making a huge difference. Sprint establishments Mt. Eden, St. Elizabeth, JFK, Calaveras, and Skyline will battle for king and queen sprint honors. Winning marks will likely be in the low to sub 1:40 range, which could challenge a great record set by Castlemont last year.

Coed 4x800 Meter Relay (girl-girl-boy-boy)
(Meet Record: 9:01.40, Montgomery, 2003)

The last event of the evening will likely have all the spectators standing as once again the girls and boys of some amazingly talented distance programs consisting of a cadre of 2004 state cross country qualifiers blaze the track in a 2 lap effort. The favorites for team honors in this one include Bishop O'Dowd (both girls and boys qualified from 2004 State XC Meet) and Piedmont (look for fast first legs from the Sparks twins), with St. Elizabeth, Foothill, JFK, and Redwood likely to be in the mix. Several teams have a shot to break the elusive 9:00 minute barrier and get the meet record.
