***WEEKEND RECAP***
Rancho Cotate Invitational
From Cole To Diamond; Taylor Also Sparkles In Debut

Photos by Margaret Gallagher and Jim Taylor
St. Helena HS senior Brian Cole wins boys race in 14:01; Super frosh Jacque Taylor
(Casa Grande) wins in 16:22. Petaluma boys/Maria Carrillo girls run very well
.
Warmup: Season-opening non-scoring affair for North Coast Section teams.
Race Facts: St. Helena's Brian Cole was sick at last year's state finals in Fresno, so he remained under the radar. But a 4:16.86 for 1600m in track signaled his inevitable ascent. Cole was challenged here by Montgomery's Blake McDowall, who reportedly was helping press the pace early. Cole won by six seconds over McDowall, with Petaluma's Sterling Lockert not far behind. On the girls' side, Casa Grande frosh Jacque Taylor, who has has plenty of success with the Santa Rosa Express club team in recent years, won as freshmen went 1-2 in the race. The course was 2.75 miles.
Warmdowns: Although it was a non-scoring meet, computing the results on our own has Petaluma's boys edging Maria Carrillo, 51-56. That's no surprise to the Pumas, who've been respectfully acknow-ledging "P-Town's" improvements in recent seasons. On the girls' side, Maria Carrillo would have out-scored runner-up Santa Rosa, 49-70. Maria Carrillo moves to Division III this year. St. Helena's Cole moves to Division V - just barely. The cutoff is 499 students. St. Helena's enrollment? Yep, 499.

Toro Teambuilder Invitational
NMC Boys 'Pack' A Real Punch To Win Opener

Photos sent from Toro Teambuilder

Warmup: Season opener on popular course - this year's finals at Toro Park.

Race Facts: Boys - Ivan Bojorquez of Los Banos the individual winner at 16:53, with North Monterey County undoubtedly under orders to "pack" run, cruising in with the top five all within one second of 8th placer Francisco Cornejo (11th 17:42) for the team win at 45 over Seaside's 50.  Sam Smiley (love the name, instant "favorite athlete!") (Notre Dame, Belmont) took the Girls' contest at 19:39, with NMC the next five with runner-up Stephanie Pritchard (20:24) leading the crew--the 1-5 NMC pack here gapped all of 20 seconds!  If pack running was the daily goal give an "A" grade to the NMC program.
Warmdowns: After a brutally warm summer for many inland just a short distance from the beaches, it was probably great to get down near the ocean.  With North Monterey County's strong tradition the troops  will be turned loose down the road and we will see how truly strong the teams here are.  Keep an eye out for the young Monterey HS duo of Jake Arveson and James Caress, who went 1-2 in the Frosh/Soph Boys contest with good 17:35 and 17:36 clockings.

Results from race on 2.4-mile course      Photo Album

Warmup: With the "Mount" in the background (Shasta that is) runners have to be inspired each year at this beautiful competition!  Great Girls' group back up north with pleasant surprise for the win there.

Race Facts: Mt. Shasta had veteran leader Austin Fritzke head off to the Air Force Academy, but took 1-2-3 here, led by Cory Coppin (13:58 over 2.4 miles).  On the ladies' side it was Lizzy Gruber (Reding Adventist) who surprised with her 15:49 Meet Record win by over 30 seconds over State Div V second placer Natalie Sojka (Mt. Shasta).  Snappy group back for Mt. Shasta, with five in the top sixteen, with team leader Katie Fritzke off any course this weekend.
Warmdowns: Lizzy Gruber 6th in Section in Track over 3200m in the spring at 11:53, and did not show up in Section CC Results last Fall, so run here shows another star in the Section's galaxy on the Girls' side!  Most of the local teams head to Stanford in a couple of weeks so it will be a good test to build for.  Katie Fritzke (MS) usually heads down to Granite Bay Invite this weekend, but was not in those results.

Brendan Gregg to the Boys' contest, leading his Davis team (middle) over Jesuit (rt)

Warmup: A much anticipated opening weekend highlight statewide each year, GB again drew a super cast, with a bit of a local and regional sense of things with Central Section powers often heading north.

Race Facts: Davis HS came to run, with the State's top "team" (Boys/Girls) performance of the weekend with two team titles here.  Brendan Gregg (D) led the Boys to their 51-55 win over Jesuit, which typically leaves a star or three out of the race here, with his 17:02.5 run.  Chelsea Reilly (D) won the Girls' contest at 20:27.0, with the Blue Devil Girls' squad 77-86 winners over a feisty St. Francis group.
Warmdowns: Alex Kosinski (Oak Ridge) is nursing a sore foot, with Marie Lawrence (Reno), last year's winner not appearing this year - so much for that contest of a couple of the nation's best!  Good wins by Davis, with the Jesuit (#2 Statewide NTN rankings) and Madera (#9 NTN State ranked) Boys very talented groups assured of doing some real damage down the road.  St. Francis ladies a pleasant effort as they will battle Division II this year it appears.

Wolfpack Invitational

Results from 2.1 and 1.6 mile races

Warmup: Annual Friday season opener in San Diego starts So Cal multi-school action with a splash, always some top runners/teams showing up.

Race Facts: Girls - #19 Ranked in the US Torrey Pines came out charging, as the squad had four within 33 seconds of soph "fastest of day" race winner Erin Gillingham (8:54), with Erin 4:57.31 for 1600m last spring in track.  Tony Bareno (Valhalla) quickest of day on Boys' side with 10:37 win over rival Muluken Beressa (Monte Vista) 10:44.
Warmdowns: Torrey Pines ladies certainly hope this high-powered start will help fuel them to good efforts through the Fresno State meet and then as a club on to Portland and the Nike Team Nationals meet.  There will be some titanic local contests for TP with rival La Costa Canyon to keep their local attention.  Rancho Buena Vista Boys 57:29 by our math through 5 on this short course, with Rancho Bernardo good pack at 58:26, and Torrey Pines/Steele Canyon some good up-front running.

Warmup: San Diego action for the first Saturday of the season here, with some good folks out on the course once again.

Race Facts: Mac Fleet (University City), 1:55.72 and 4:25 for a mile last spring as a ninth grader, raced the #2 Frosh/Soph time ever of 8:07 on the course to start the day off Boys D1 Fr/So, with 4:13 1600 star Austin Jett (Eastlake) 10:29 to take the Boys DI Jr/Sr contest (CR 10:05 Jason Finch Granite Hills 1998) over Eric Avila (Bonita Vista) 10:34.  2:15.08 800 runner Sarah Vitug (Univ City) 9:18 GD1 winner over Andrea Jacobs (Vista) on Girls' side (CR 8:54 Claire Rethemeier 2003).  El Cap's Kyle Phipps (10:56) and Stephanie Cook (9:57) took the D2 Jr/Sr contests, with EC's Katie Martin 9:58 in the GD2 Fr/So.
Warmdowns: Austin Jett certainly one of the tallest elite level runners in state history (wonder if he can dunk?).  Unofficial quick score (remember Fr/So boys different distance here) had BD1 Var Eastlake 54-Fallbrook 62.  El Cap 22 point total BD2 Var.  Combining the two Ladies' contests had GD1 Uni City 49;35, Fallbrook 50:45, and Vista 50:46 in the team time 1-5 department, with El Capitan 53:15 team time combined Var/Fr/So GD2.  Months to go before we sleep so plenty of time for improvement by all.
