Ebony and Brittany... superb in quality!

Photos by Margaret Gallagher
Long Beach Wilson super sophomore Ebony Collins (far right in left photo) became the second girl
ever to win four gold medals in a single California state meet (joining Westchester's Gwen Loud from
1979) by winning the 100 (11.50), the 300LH (state-meet record 40.10), and keying the victorious 4x100
(44.84) and 4x400 relays (3:39.27), with the short race being the 5th-fastest performance in U.S. history!
At right, senior Brittany Daniels of team champion Merrill West HS was flying the friendly skies, soaring
44-01.25w to win the TJ, spanning 20-08.25 to capture the LJ, and running strong on Leg 2 in 4x1 (45.78)!

Mr. Klech is now Mr. Clutch!!!

California of San Ramon superstar David Klech had a very busy yet successful weekend in
winning his first state title (lifetime-best 36.06 in the intermediate hurdles), earning the
runner-up medallion in the high hurdles (lifetime legal best 13.94 in prelims), and battlin
pesky headwinds to place third in the long jump (22-05.75). David competed here as a
sophomore last year and did not score a point in his lone final, but returned in 2005 to score 24
individual points, seemingly a boys' state-meet record! (Keep in mind that scoring values were
different in the old days). Mr. Clutch saved his best for last, showing poise, maturity and focus
to record the #2 junior-class time (and #21 overall) in U.S. history! Way to go, David!!!

Note on Central Section Track & Field Finals from Mid-May

Clovis West and Edison will share the Central Section boys track and field championship.
That was the result of a California Interscholastic Federation investigation into the Central
Section meet May 18, which ended with Edison being announced as champion of the boys
division with 56 points to Clovis West's 55.
The Golden Eagles were awarded two additional points Monday when their
fifth-place discus thrower was moved into fourth after a disqualification was upheld
for a Redwood thrower who had finished third. Fourth place was worth four points;
fifth was worth two. (ed note - Redwood thrower showed up late, allowed in, but later
we guess dq'd).
That gave Clovis West 57 points.
But the Eagles had been given six points in high jump when they should have been given
five for a tie for third place. Subtract one point and Edison and Clovis West officially
are co-champs at 56 points each.

Girls Pole Vault Standard for Junior Nationals
(Carson next week 6/23-26) lowered to 12-07.5

From this thread over at polevaultpower (posted by Becca, who runs the site)
http://polevaultpower.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=48207
The qualifying standard for the women's pole vault at the USA Junior
Championships has been lowered to 3.85/12-7.5.
If you can help publicize this, I would be very grateful! Sorry about the
late notice. - Glen McMicken - USAT&F
