Edwards, Godina & Demus dazzle!

Dave Casper and Kirby Lee on site in Sacramento!

Pomona HS and USC grad Torri Edwards (left) punched her ticket to
Athens with a splendid 11.02 run in the women's 100m final, with ex-
Rio Mesa HS/Thousand Oaks HS grad Marion Jones fifth in 11.14!
UCLA alum John Godina (center) returns to the Olympic stage after a
big 69-02 heave in the shot put to capture second place in loaded field!
Ex-Long Beach Wilson star Lashinda Demus (U. of South Carolina)
continues to make a big international statement after a fine 53.70 performance that topped qualifying in the women's 400m hurdles!

                                              Quotable:
"The gun went off and I went straight to the back. That's what happened."
-- Sprinter Jon Drummond, asked what happened during his last-place finish in the first round of the 100m.
"You never buy rounds of beer for shotputters. It's too expensive." -- Athens qualifier Adam Nelson, when asked who would buy the first round of celebratory beers that night.
"I don't think the sport is in trouble, but I do think some people are in trouble." -- George Williams, U.S. Olympic Team Men's Coach, commenting on the BALCO drug scandal.
  • The Good: National prep 300mLH recordholder Lashinda Demus, who prepped at LB Wilson, topped great action in the 400H along with Sheena Johnson (attended UCLA this past spring), in semis action. Demus' 53.70 was 3rd-best in the world this year!
  • The Bad: Christian Cantwell, who was riding a 14-meet winning streak, fouled on five of six attempts and placed fourth, leaving worldly talent out of Athens.
  • The Ugly: The subject of rumors regarding the recent BALCO scandal, Marion Jones finished a stunning fifth in the women's 100m final, timed in 11.14.
