At right, Ed Cornell of Burroughs (Ridgecrest) enjoyed a huge day in the discus at the Huntington Beach
Relays, with a lifetime-best 197-09 ... but had to settle for second place! At left, The Bishop School of
La Jolla's Daniel Schaerer hurled the platter a 2004 nation-leading 200-06 to win big! Nice quarterting
winds aided these throwers here! Next throws meet here is the Surf City Invitational next Saturday!

"Miles of Smiles" + Bethke's Winning Smile!

Photos by Rich Gonzalez
Tons and tons of boys and girls (can we get the official count?) joined the sub-5:00 and sub-6:00 club
for 1600 meters at the ever-popular meet in the San Gabriel Valley. Much of the group is pictured
above! Mohamed Trafeh (4:13.97) and Monika Rothenburger (5:04.86) topped the time charts.
In the featured boys' 3200, El Toro's Brandon Bethke (at right) kicked home in a high 59-point
to fend off Duarte's Mohamed Trafeh and win in a U.S. outdoor leading 9:02.15 to 9:02.64. Bethke
recently set the all-time prep U.S. best for 2000 meters (5:22.69) as well. Way to go Brandon!!!
