Central Section State Qualifier - Buchanan HS (Clovis)

Thursday 5/18/00

A great Boys half to this meet featured some great multi-

event efforts and wins, with Brandon Matlock (Stockdale) 47.77

(400) and then 21.64 (200) and Fernando Cabada (Buchanan) 4:17.18

and 9:17.89 (3200) wins. Dante Washington (Clovis West) was

10.59 wind-legal in the 100, the State's #3 clocking, with a fine

anchor on a 41.70 short relay winner. David Adamo (Clovis West)

added a 59-07.5 Shot Put win to come back after the 59-02 throw

by Cole Sprague of Coalinga.

--Matlock cranked a good turn here to show his 400 strength could

overcome Washington's 100 speed. Matlock later commented that he

felt the pressure was off after his 400 win, and that he planned

and carried out a good start. He felt pressure from Washington

when they entered the homestretch, but concentrated on

accelerating on in, pumping his arms to give himself power.

Matlock stated the 200 was the easier of the two wins, and he

hoped to move to the "medal scene" come state in two weeks.

--J.J. Duke of Clovis set the early pace with a pack of three

joining him (with Fernando Cabada notably not one of them). The

pace rolled through 69 second laps to a 1600 split of 4:36. A 73

second 400 pulled the following group closer, with the Buchanan

star back with the front pack at 7:02 for the six lap split.

With 600 meters to go Cabada took a quick spill, but was up

instantly to rejoin the lead pack. The time was 8:13 with one to

go as Mario Macias led narrowly over Cabada and Daniel Avila,

with JJ Duke falling away from the lead pack. Cabada charged

away to his 9:17.89 win. Cabada will drop the 1600 for state,

with obvious interest in a win there in two weeks. Fernando

commented on a bit of fatigue from the 1600 and his desire to not

wear himself out early. He felt 70 second laps would put him

eventually near the lead, which it did. He then planned on his

strong finish to carry him to victory. Cabada's final lap in his

1600 win and 3200 win add up to around a 2:00 800, not bad

running with 10 laps total leading up to that point. Some great

people wait down South, with Ryan Hall (Big Bear) a 4:05 1600 and

9:02 full two miles indoors, Josh Spiker (Ventura) back in gear,

8:56 runner Augie Escobar (Villa Park) ready for a peak, and

others to duel with Cabada and the people who move on from here.

and looked a tad better, but the West Bakersfield star shined on

this day with a 16" above his head clearance to win.

--Jess Washington put it out there, with a 47-10.5 effort on his

very first effort (nearly four and a half feet farther than

anyone in the first or his second flight on their first efforts

for the day!). He added a 47-07.25 and 45-11.75, also better than

second place for the day to emphasize his championship nature.

Franklin (Monache, Porterv) 46-07.)

--Another great competition. David Adamo has been trying to get

back to the 60 feet he achieved last year, with Cole Sprague a

huge improvement on his final effort to 59-02 to provide some

motivation. Adamo answered with a 59-07.5 for the win, with a

60-footer having to wait for two weeks in State at Cerritos.

best opener of 171-06, with Pedersen 175-01 on his first throw in

the finals. PR's for O'Neil and Kemp in second in third.

Great Central Section State Qualifier

Tiffany Bennett (Centennial, Bakersfield) headlined the Girls' half of this contest with two area records in the 100 Meters, with a #6 time nationally of 11.69 in a perfect race for the USC- bound senior over rival Halima Decree, with a 24.11 200 that took down Janice Nichols' (Bakersfield) and her old Meet Record there.

A number of other very competitive and quality events were featured during a warm afternoon and evening at the super Buchanan HS (Clovis area) facility.

--Athlete of the Meet Tiffany Bennett. In lane 5, with future USC teammate and rival Halima Decree in lane 7, the pressure was on. Bennett drove out of the blocks with a start described by Mike Kennedy of Track and Field News as "lightning quick," that put her quickly into a two meter lead. Decree closed down a bit by the middle of the event, but Bennett found another gear over the final 40 meters to win 11.69-11.83. The 11.69 is the nation's #6 clocking of the year, and an all-time Valley record. Bennett stated that she was more serious this week than last, when she beat Decree 12.17-12.18 in an area meet. She wanted to run in the 11.80's today. When asked how her races usually go against Decree she said that she usually comes from behind, but her concentration totally on her own race usually blocks out what others are doing around her. Her goal to make the state finals is one she feels she can achieve this year. USC is getting a real talent here!!

--Jenna Keith scratched out of the 1600 to be fresh here. Natalie Garcia had run the 1600 and placed second, so the 2:11 star had to carry in a bit of fatigue. Jenna and Marilyn Smith led the event through a 66 second 400, with Garcia tucked in nicely behind. Down the backstretch the Buchanan star challenged, with a good run down the homestretch for what amounted to a good double (2:13.98 with her 5:05.51 earlier). Later Natalie indicated that she felt that if she stayed with Keith she felt that she could outkick here. She stated, "Keith is an excellent runner, and I knew I would have to run hard to beat her."
