Darrell Rideaux, the Poly athlete, not Kelly as first thought, was the 4x4 relay member who collided and fell yesterday, with ankle and back problems that caught up with him here. Darrell had a big-time back cramp at the finish and fell to fourth, needing some serious treatment for a time after the finish. Josh Spiker and Fernando Cabada doing most of the work through 64.9-2:13.6 and 3:23.4 splits, with Spiker and Escobar up front at 4:29.4 for the 1600. Four pulled away (Spiker-Escobar-Cabada, and Pina) by 5:38.4 for the 2000 (69.0 lap 5), with Josh suddenly backing off from pressing the pace through a 37.0 first 200 in lap 6. McInvale had edged up to the front group by 6:51.0 six lap (35.6 200). 1600 winner Marcus Chandler surprisingly was at the tail end o the top pack by now. At 7:59.6 and the bell a number of people were close. Chandler moved up to press Escobar for the lead at the 3000 meter point (8:32.4), with the four lap winner appearing to be able to pull off a big double during a furious homestretch run. However, just into the homestretch Spiker caught fire, sprinting up to and just catching Escobar, then Chandler right at the finish 9:02.00- 9:02.22-9:02.49. During the homestretch run it was Henderson continuing to edge away, with a 52.87-54.20 win. The 52.87 is #10 All-time Californian, and one of the top soph times in U.S. History. At the bell in 3:39.9 it was as you had written the script, with Bei and Barrientos side by side, stride for stride. Sara pushed it down the backstretch, but Alejandra moved ahead with 200 to go and edged away to a nation-leading 4:45.02 win, with Bei lifetime best 4:46.71 in second. Through 6:24.4 and 7:43.7 lap points Fleshman continued to roll, with Sara fifteen seconds back at the end of six laps. At 9:02.6 Fleshman was way out, closing in 76 for her 10:18.81 win. Sara was 10:31.06 to win this event last year, with 10:31.67 here along with her 4:46.71 lifetime best in the 1600 earlier in the evening for another great chapter in her career.
