Analysis - The outdoor hurdle events were probably the best thing going on the boys side in 2007, as an incredibly deep crop of barrier masters authored one of the best seasons ever, especially in the longer races. Never had more athletes broken 36 in one year in the 300H, for example. The campaign was capped off with dramatic 110H and 400H victories at the World Youth Championships by Wayne Davis II NC and William Wynne GA.

And that’s the great thing about it – if you’re running World Youth, you’ve usually got at least one more year in high school. Wynne, in fact, is arguably the nation’s top returning boys athlete in the sport, period. Yes, some outstanding hurdlers were lost to graduation, including 300H US-record setter (35.28) Jeshua Anderson CA, USATF Jr. 110H champ Brandon Ames WY, and 55H indoor US record-setter (7.07) and Pam Am Jrs double gold medalist Johnny Dutch NC. And Robert Griffin TX, whose 35.33 300H missed the US record by .01 at the time (Anderson’s mark came later) and whose 13.46 110H was US#1, is reportedly skipping his senior season of track to enroll in college early for football.

But with the return of Wynne, Davis, Reggie Wyatt CA, Spencer Adams NC, and other super talents, the hurdle events should have another banner year.

Wynne went into NON with the #3 300H time of the year, but then began a meteoric post-season that saw him nip Wyatt for the 400H title in Greensboro, win the USATF Jr 400H title in a then-#2-all-time 49.70, then take the World Youth 400H title in 49.01 (33”). He added the World Youth 110H silver for good measure.

Davis and Wyatt, meanwhile, were giving new meaning to the term “super sophs.” Davis took the NON 110H title in 13.65, then the World Youth crown in 13.18 (36”). Wyatt’s 50.10 at NON was a national soph record (as was his earlier 35.90 300H) and he followed with the World Youth silver at 400H.

Another trend that should continue is North Carolina as the country’s hurdling hotbed. Besides Davis, returning are Adams (13.74/36.04), Booker Nunley (13.73), and Issac McReynolds (7.49 55H), among others.

Indoors, Davis has to be the national favorite with top returning times of 7.32 (55H) and 7.83 (60H). He’s also the top returning NIN finisher.

Some others to look out for all year long will be Trey Charles GA (36.72), Barrett Nugent LA (13.70), Jamele Mason TX (36.93), and Michael Hancock CO (7.89).
