Archbishop Ryan PA boys 10:19.59 (from unseeded section), Warwick Valley NY girls 11:44.44 #4 all-time
| | by Matt Soja, DyeStat correspondent
This relay ended in a manner almost unheard of in distance events at the national level. Archbishop Ryan from Philadelphia (above) ran 10:19.59 in the unseeded heat, just edging out Scarsdale, which is quite an impressive time for the "slow" heat, but few expected what unfolded next. The seeded heat was loaded up with several teams with a good shot at the national crown, and what resulted was a very exciting but unfortunately (for them, at least) slightly tactical anchor leg.
With Warwick Valley trying to hold off Shenendehowa, Brookline MA and Jefferson VA, those four teams focused only on each other, forgetting about the clock. And when Purple Wave anchor crossed the finish almost two seconds ahead of Shen, it "looked" like they won the national title. But the clock does not lie. Warwick's 10:19.94 was not enough to best the Pennsylvania team, with the differential of merely 0.35 seconds. It is a shame that Archbishop Ryan and Scarsdale were not in the seeded heat, as that could have resulted in a great 6-way head-to-head battle for the crown, but this proves that not being in the fastest heat does not mean you have no chance to win at the national stage.
Archbishop Ryan's splits were: Phil Celona 3:11.5, Kevin Myslinski 50.5, Kieran Hennessy 2:01.0, and Sean Mallon 4:14.8 (a 4-second PR).
After the race the winners said they "did not expect this at all." Having run only 10:34 this season, they were pleasantly surprised with their huge improvement. Mallon said that watching the seeded heat unfold after their race was "the worst," but after they found out they won by a fraction of a second, they "went crazy and had the best feeling ever." Mallon added that without Scarsdale also running the unseeded heat, Archbishop Ryan probably would not have been able to run faster than the seeded section. He said, "it really came down to us two pushing each other on the anchor, and that helped me out by at least 3 seconds." Next on their plate - DMR on their home turf at Penn Relays.

Warwick Valley, RI 11:44.44
Analysis: WV actually trailed in second place going into the 800m portion of the race. Tori Pennings stormed to a 2:12.4 leg to open a sizable lead. Warrick anchor Lillian Greibesland (above) did what solid anchors do with a large lead: they don’t relinquish it. It appeared for a short time the chase pack led by Suffern, Ny, Burnt Hills, and several others would cut into the 10-second lead and challenge. Unfortunately for them, Greibesland’s 4:54.6 carry negated the 4:54’s by the aforementioned units. |
