Lead Story by Brett Honeycutt
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It was a Tennessee sweep at the FootLocker South Regional on Saturday at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, N.C.
Kathy Kroeger (Independence High, TN) repeated as champ and qualified for her fourth nationals, and Bill Matthews (Tennessee DII 2A champion), whose Baylor team ran at the NTN qualifier last year, overtook good friend and fellow Tennessean Matt Sonnenfeldt (Knoxville West, Tennessee 3A champ) in the last 100 meters to win the boys’ race on a wet and somewhat muddy course.
The weather slowed the times a little, but not as much as in years past when bad weather gave runners calf-deep water and thick mud to navigate through on the usually fast McAlpine Park course.
Kroeger, the 2006 national champion, bested 2007 national champion Ashley Brasovan (West Palm Beach, FL), who finished in fourth after falling before the big hill on the course (about halfway through the race). Kroeger finished in 17:13 and Brasovan came across in 17:20. Megan Marsico (Glenvar, VA), who suffered her first loss this season, was second in 17:15.
“Today, my goal was just to qualify,” Kroeger said. “I haven’t had time to think about nationals. It’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s going to be really competitive. I just want to go out there and have a good race.”
In the boys’ race, it really was a two-person race between Sonnenfeldt and C.J. Brown (Southlake, TX; two-time national qualifier) until Matthews came up to challenge with about 1,000 meters left. He then kicked past Sonnenfeldt to win in 14:48. Sonnenfeldt crossed the line in 14:50 and Brown was third in 14:59.
“With a thousand (meters) to go, I said ‘I can win this. If I squeeze the trigger, and keep squeezing, squeezing, squeezing, I can get it,” said Matthews, who became the third Baylor runner to qualify for nationals in the 30-year history of the meet.
With Clint McKelvey’s eighth place finish (15:10), it was the first time Tennessee had ever qualified three boy runners to nationals. QUALIFIERS for Foot Locker National Finals in San Diego Dec. 13
