The top of the boys half of the 2008 Nike Web Nationals had a very familiar look to it; but on the girls half, it was all about fresh faces.

Desert Vista (Phoenix AZ) showed that its champion boys team from last year was no one-hit wonder. They led wire-to-wire this year to repeat with 8430 points, 113 more than last year. Los Gatos CA moved up a spot to 2nd with 8190, 129 more than last year. The 2007 runner up, Warren Central IN, was 7th, while Vista Murrieta CA moved into third.

For the girls, however, Texas A&M Consolidated saw its 3-year reign come to an end and Clovis West CA take the top spot. Clovis West racked up 8005 points, topping last year’s winners by 154. Gig Harbor WA came in late for the 2nd spot with 7888, while it was Chandler High AZ in third. The top three changed completely from a year ago.

In each of the 10 events on the NWN card, Desert Vista scored at least 763 points. In the throws, it was Stephen Figueroa hitting 58-10.75 SP and 174-02 DT. Matt Boughton took care of the 1600 and 3200 with 4:23.19 and 9:17.56. Allante Battle was supreme in the sprints with 10.69 100 and 47.12 400. Leapers Luke Matthews (22-11.50 LJ), Chris Ingrassia (6-8 HJ), and Joel Lang (15-07 PV) took care of business. Then it was Ingrassia with the highest mark of them all, 14.06 in the 110H.

But even this performance really doesn’t do the strength of this team justice. It was at the 5A state meet that the power of this team was demonstrated as won with 209.50 points, scoring in all 17 events, and 140 up on 2nd place. They rocked 4x400 and 4x800 relays with 3:13.50 and 7:45.40, both in the nation’s top five near season’s end. They showed their short speed at Arcadia with 41.35 4x100. Maybe most impressive was their taking 1-2-3 in the state meet 400, all with sub-48 clockings. When Jim Spier calls your team the best in the country and one of the best he’s ever seen, it’s time to take notice.

“It is a great honor to be recognized as the NWN National Champions for the 2nd year in a row,” said coaches Chris Hanson and Ryan Stanley. “We are humbly grateful for this award to be bestowed, as we know that there were many highly competitive teams in the running. We feel extremely blessed to have such a great group of high-character young men, a supportive administration, and what we feel are some the best event coaches from across the nation! We truly felt that our depth and balance was key in making a strong push for the title.”

Clovis West came into the title chase in May and held on for the win the next several weeks. They started with sprinter Magen Del Pino, who ran 11.66 (top mark by points) and 1:00.54 for 100 and 400. Chloe Allen took care of the 1600 and 3200 with 5:02.46 and 11:00.24. Also doing double-duty was Alyssa Monteverde, with 14.57 for 100H and 5-05 for the HJ. Janae Coffee (131-05 DT) and Tasha Firestone (40-00.50 SP) split the throws, while the other jumps were carried by Katie Ogden (17-10 LJ) and Allison Berryhill (11-07 PV). All the scores fell within the 713-917 range.

What made this year team so good was it's depth,” said Coach Bryan Allen. “We almost scored top 3 points in every event in the league championship, which we won by nearly 60 points. This year at the Central Section Championships, we scored points in 11 different events and won 6 events. We had 11 different athletes score points at the section meet. This team won the section championship by 39 points.”

These teams will receive visits from Nike athletes for a big team party to honor their accomplishments, in addition to other items. Distance star and double 207 World Championships gold medalist Bernard Lagat will visit Desert Vista, while decathlete Bryan Clay, the World Champion in 2005, heads to Clovis West.

A total of 523 teams participated this year, up 43 from last year.
