Ashland felt that they deserved to be in the top race, they were a bubble team and had a solid season which included a solid 3rd place finish at Oregon State against Crater and Hermiston, both of who were in the championship race. They had to settle for winning the Varsity race against some very good teams as they held off traditional powerhouse Joel Ferris WA and Idaho’s #3 team in Mountain View 65-81-84. Ashland was led by the individual winner, Matt Miner, who managed to out kick race-long leader Tyler Curtis from Caldwell ID 16:09.8 to 16:11.5. That kind of finish is exactly what he’s been working towards over the last year. “One of the things I’ve done for a really long time has been working on perfecting my form and making sure it’s absolutely as perfect as can be. That’s something I’ve been working on for a year or so.” Through all his work, the Ashland senior is confident in his ability at the finish: “I know that, whatever the terrain, when I hit about 150 to go I can lay down a really good sprint and be much more efficient about my form. So that’s one of my main weapons.” After using the same tactic last week to jump from 5th to 2nd at the Oregon state meet in the last 300 meters, he again made his move with about 250 to go and didn’t look back.
