A Wicked suprise for the two favorites

The first Northeast Nike Team Regional championships featured cold weather on a sunny day, a slow and muddy course, Bernard Lagat signing autographs, and a festive atmosphere. But most of all, it featured a spectacular competition for tickets to the Nike Team Nationals in Oregon next weekend. In the end, there were no huge surprises for the boys but the girls’ race featured a major upset as Wicked TC (Lincoln-Sudbury MA) surprised the favorites from Hunterdon Hawks TC (Voorhees NJ) and Hanover RC (Hanover NH), with all three teams on their way to Portland as well after Hanover got an at-large bid.
The individual competition saw a wire-to-wire winning performance by Hanover’s Georgia Griffin, with Hunterdon’s Melanie Thompson following her at a distance. Griffin had an 8-second lead at the mile, 11-second at 2 miles, and just kept extending it over Thompson who was safely in second. But the pack of blue shirts behind her indicated that something unexpected was going on in the team competition. Griffin took it all the way to the tape, hitting the line in 18:53, one of the few times she did not break a course record this fall. Thompson was second in 19:06.
Although Hanover and Hunterdon Hawks were strong up front, they could not match Wicked when it came to depth. Wicked’s top runner, Andrea Keklak finished 4th in 19:17, and although Hanover had two and Hunterdon three girls in front of Wicked’s second, the underdogs from Sudbury had an impressive 45-second spread for their top five girls. Coach Chris Tarello’s harriers had their fifth runner, Claire Arthur, in before Hanover’s fourth and, even more importantly, 41 seconds and 18 places ahead of Hunterdon Hawks’ fifth, giving them the victory over the New Jersey champions by a 69-73 margin.
The Wicked girls have bounced extremely well from their loss to Newton South at the EMass meet two weeks ago, winning the state meet last weekend and now the regional crown. Keklak said that this meet was the most important one for the season for her team, adding, “at the beginning of the season we planned it out so this would be our biggest goal, so we are extremely happy we accomplished it.”
The superfrosh said that with one mile to go she “saw a Hunterdon girl ahead and somebody yelled if I passed her, we could win it, so I took off,” resulting in her best race of the season. She added that several battles against Newton South helped them prepare for this kind of close competition.
Hunterdon Hawks, fresh off their course-record breaking victory at the New Jersey state meet as Voorhees, continued the Garden State’s tradition of qualifying a team for NTN Nationals since the meet’s inception. As expected, their top four runners were very strong, but the gap to fifth runner was not enough to offset Wicked’s pack, although they did defeat the favorites from Hanover, avenging their loss at Manhattan.
The runners from New England champions finished a disappointing third, despite Griffin’s victory and Heidi Caldwell’s sixth place. The gaps between their runners were too big to defeat Hunterdon. Hanover received a wild card because of its school’s Manhattan performance, where they defeated three auto qualifiers (two from this meet and Tatnall from Southeast), but they will certainly want to improve at Nationals to finish their season on an upbeat note.
