Early into the race two things quickly became quite evident, Stotan (Fayetteville Manlius) was off to another dominating team performance and not only were Kinetic RC's (Saratoga) Hannah Davidson and Burnt Hill’s Sam Roecker in the race (not running at FLNE as had been rumored), but had quickly made the individual race a two girl affair. As early as the 800 meter mark, Stotan (F-M) already had five of the top ten and were well on their way to victory.
At each strategic viewing point on the course, Stotan was in total command, while Roecker and Davidson kept trading the lead. At the 2500 meter point in the race, Roecker held a slight lead over Davidson and the team scores were Stotan 35, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake TC 69, Kinetic RC 90 and Greenwich 95, East Aurora 108 and Warwick 113.
At a little over a 1000 meters to go, Roecker held a very slight lead over Davidson with the rest of the field about 100 meters back. Again it was quite evident that Stotan was going to be your team victor, but it appeared that Kinetic RC was closing the gap on Burnt Hills. As the runners appeared from the last wooded loop with less than 200 meters to go, Roecker had put about 10 seconds on Davidson and finished at 18:18.5. Davidson crossed at 18:29.4. Caitlin Lane of Greenwich Witches had moved into third at 18:47.8 and then came the Stotan trio of MacKenzie Carter, Courtney Chapman and Hannah Luber. After that the runners came fast and furious into the finish.
When it all had been sorted out the final scores determined that Stotan (40) and Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake TC (72) were going to Portland and that Kinetic RC (Saratoga) (83) and Warwick (98) would be waiting by their phones tomorrow awaiting an at large berth. East Aurora (99) and Greenwich Witches (106) rounded out the top six, in what is perhaps the best state in the nation for girl’s cross country. Winning coach Bill Aris was proud of his team, but would only comment that it was merely step 3 of their plan to try and defend their title in Portland. Shaun Zepf, coach of runnerup Burnt Hills was a lot more emotional. Stating how he preached to his team that nothing comes without adversity and how his team had overcome injuries and illness all season to obtain their goal today of going to Portland next week. When asked about her individual victory, Roecker would only comment on how much she realized each and every point meant, and that first was one less point then second. ”It was all about the team today,” she responded when asked how it felt to win.
