The Wayzata-Team Swanson Synergy Pays Off

Minnesota and Kansas teams with unique partnership go 1-2 for Portland berths; Bismarck TC's Joash Osoro 15:40 hangs on for win after torrid start

By SteveU and Tony Bozarth

If you were watching carefully the awards ceremony for the Boys Championship race at the NTN Heartland Regional in Sioux Falls Saturday, you might have noticed something unusual when the top two teams were announced. You may have seen the winning Wayzata XC (Plymouth MN) crew applauding with maximum volume when runner-up Team Swanson (Shawnee KS) was announced, and the favor being returned moments later when the champs were crowned. What was it about those Minnesota and Kansas kids?

Well, the story started in 1999 when these clubs’ high school coaches, Bill Miles of Wayzata HS and Van Rose of Shawnee Mission Northwest HS, met at a conference at Carlton College in Northfield, Minnesota. This wasn’t a running clinic or something like that, mind you, but a conference for teachers of advanced placement courses (which should tell you something about these guys and their teams). From there, they formed a unique partnership and created a synergy that seems to have found its apex this year.

Each team was ranked going into the Roy Griak Invitational, but #1 Rosemount was expected to win. Wayzata, however, used some amazing come-from-behind running to capture the title over the injury-riddled favorites, and Shawnee Mission NW was 2nd. The Griak is indeed seen as a Heartland preview, but who could have predicted then that this Saturday’s result would be the same? Wayzata’s club employed the same style to emerge victorious with 100 points, a decisive victor in what was considered a wide-open race, even if know one really knew for sure who won until the ceremony.

None of the Wayzatas were in the top 40 at the mile, but in the team scoring at the end, they were 8-17-18-22-35, with Jeremy Drenckhahn (16:12), Anders Bowman (16:28), Danny Ducharme (16:28), Peter Holmes (16:33), and Andrew Wasz (16:45). The 5-second 2-4 spread and 33-second 1-5 were obviously keys.

Meanwhile, Team Swanson was putting on an astonishing display of pack running that would net them a close 2nd with 141 points. Their first scorer, Jared Ellsworth, was just 20th (23rd overall in 16:31), but 5th man Sterling Spencer was 37th (16:48) and considerably ahead of other team’s fives, except Wayzata’s. Their 1-5 spread was just 17 seconds and 6th man Keaton Jones was right with Spencer in 38th. St. Louis XC (University High, St. Louis) was just 10 points behind Team Swanson and Brainerd XC (Brainerd MN) four more. But it was enough.

Wayzata won doing what their HS team has done all year. “That’s our race strategy, not to go out too fast,” said Drenckhahn, a junior. “It comes from our coach. But the second and third miles, we keep rolling, keep rolling, and pick off as many people as we can.”

“They ran in typical Bill Miles fashion,” said Wayzata club coach Kraig Lungstrom of the racing style preferred by their regular-season high school coach. “Most of them try and take out the first kilometer in around 3:25, then keep on moving up. And then we just have such solid team depth. We’re very strong in our three through seven. We usually have a 20-second spread there.”

Drenckhahn said the Griak win was a key to the season. “We got a lot of confidence after that and we were able to go undefeated for the year.” Has it sunk in that you’re going to NTN in Portland, yet? A laugh. “It still hasn’t sunk in that we won state yet!”

While the Wayzata clan had a reasonable idea they could be first or second, Team Swanson’s runners were pleasantly surprised at the results. “We had no idea we were second,” one said as they were collectively interviewed. “When we were racing we kept hearing the announcements and team scores and they didn't even mention us in the top five.”

At the two mile mark, team scores had Team Swanson in sixth, but only about 20 points out of second. Was there a plan to move up that last mile? “We knew it would be quick at the start, so we practiced running our own race. There wasn't really a concentrated plan to move up as a pack, but we all started going and just picked each other up. We knew we had to pass people, but after the race we thought we were fifth or so.”

Individual battle

But it was initially hard to pick up on the team competition in this Boys Championship race because the racing up front was so ferocious. In the first mile, all of the pent-up energy from several hours of waiting to race seemed to be released in a mad stampede to the first mile mark. And what had started as a cold, cloudy, windy day had yielded to sunshine and 10 degrees of additional warmth. Many of the runners were throwing caution to the wind – a wind, incidentally, that had finally responded to pleas to simmer down and behave itself.

Bismarck TC (Bismarck ND) jr Joash Osoro led the charge, but there were no shortage of volunteers to go with him. He led past the mile in 4:46, with Bill Kogel (Sioux Falls XC), Jon Ronhovde (Fremont TC), Mike Krsnak (Rapid City Central XC), and Brad Anderson (3-D Running Club) at 4:50 or better and the masses packed in right behind them. For Osoro, even that wasn’t enough. While everyone else was absorbing the fact of how fast their splits were, the Kenyan red-lined it with a surge that wasted everyone else and gave him a 40-meter lead past 2K.

No one tried to go after Osoro, and the questions then became how well could he hang on and what would happen in the battle for 2nd. He went through 2M in 9:51, with a gap of 16 seconds until the pack of Jordan Carlson (Rosemount TC), Dominick Robinson (Gillette WY, unattached), Anderson and Kogel.

In the last mile, though, Osoro began to rig pretty badly. The chase pack, not exactly fresh themselves, began to close on him. Further back, runners from the top two teams and others who’d gone out more reasonably were catching those who had opened in 5:00 or faster.

But Osoro finally crossed the line in 15:40. Carlson outkicked Robinson for 2nd, 15:47-15:49, and Kogel was 4th in 15:52.

“I didn’t feel real great after the mile,” said Osoro with a rueful grin as he continued trying to recover 20 minutes after the race. Regarding his back-breaking surge after the mile, he added, “I just wanted to break up the pack, and see who was up for the challenge. I tried to own the race that way. But after the second set of whoop-dee-dos, I didn’t feel too good.”

“I know we went out too fast,” said Kogel, no doubt speaking for many of his peers. “I think I could have placed higher if I had held back.”

So the individual battle wasn’t the story that it was in the Girls Championship, especially as the runners slowed and the final times were more ordinary. There was no superteam here, with multiple runners who could score really low. So the race for the TEAM title, the one that mattered most – that was taking place back, WAY back, in the field. Back in the land of runners who run even paces, and use the second and third miles to roll past their foes who have gone out too hard and have little or no response (which was plenty on this day). This was the race that Wayzata XC and Team Swanson were running. These were the efforts that would pay off in trips to Portland.

So what is this Wayzata-Team Swanson/Shawnee Mission NW partnership about?

At the aforementioned 1999 conference, Mary Kay Hill, a former Mary Kay Hill, a former SMNW state champion, introduced coaches Rose and Miles. She was running at the time for the University of Minnesota and became aware of Coach Miles, a U-M alum, and was determined that the two coaches should meet. When SMNW decided to attend Griak not long after, Coach Miles insisted that the team stay with Wayzata.

When SMNW flies into Minneapolis, Wayzata has a bus waiting with their team. The teams then have a lunch prepared by the wife of one of Wayzata's assistant coaches, who is a gourmet chef. SMNW then tours Wayzata HS. On Friday afternoon the teams then run the Griak course together, and have a pasta dinner together at the high school. Two SMNW runners will then stay with a Wayzata athlete. The teams travel to the Griak Invite together, and then have evening activities together with both teams.

Some families have long histories in this program. “I remember when my older brother was running and the Weems stayed with us five years ago,” said Drenckhahn. “Every year we meet some new guys. We were just as ecstatic when we heard that they qualified as when we did. It’s awesome, a real cross-country brotherhood.”

So that explains why both teams were high-fiving and congratulating each other.

“They are great guys,” Team Swanson runners said in a collective interview. “We stay with them when we go the Roy Griak meet (as Shawnee Mission NW), so they’re like our brothers and roommates. We stay in touch via the internet, and watch how each other are doing. It's a great friendship.”

And that friendship is sure to continue in Portland.
