Maston Wallace starts pessimistic, ends up ecstatic

by Pete Cava

Pole vault: Britt Wallace sensed trouble right from the get-so. "He couldn't get off the ground," said Britt of his son, Maston Wallace, who came to Landover with a season best of 17-3.75, the year's best high school mark.

Maston, a normally easy-going senior from Clear Brook High School in Friendswood, Texas, was even more pessimistic at the outset of the vault competition. "I don't know what was going on earlier," said the University of Texas signee. "I had one good warmup vault out of twelve. It was the very last one. I couldn't get my step down. I was not at all confident going into the meet."

Concerned by his wobbly efforts, Wallace opened at the precautionary height of 15-7.25. He cleared it on his first try, and managed 16-1.25 on his initial attempt. "After that, my steps just started hitting," said Wallace.

He missed his first two tries at 16-5.25, then cleared it, and sailed past 16-9.25 with one swipe. "It finally just came together," said Maston, his voice tinged by relief. "It was awesome. I couldn't stay still, I had so much adrenaline going. Things started working for me during the competition. I just got lucky."

Lucky enough to go over the bar at 17-1 along with Spencer McCorkel of Bryant, Ark. (even though McCorkel made it on his first attempt and Wallace needed two tries).

Lucky enough to clear 17-5 on his second attempt – the third-best high school mark of all time and a meet record.

McCorkel, meanwhile, passed to 17-7, where he and Wallace both had three unsuccessful whacks at a national prep record. And finally, Wallace was lucky enough to come out on top in one of the most popular events at NIN. McCorkel was second, while Hunter Hall (Fort Wayne, Ind.) cleared 16-5.25 for third place. McCorkel, Hall and the other vaulters offered encouragement to Wallace. "We're all close, so they were all saying 'Good job,' and 'You got it,' and all that kind of stuff, cheering me on," he said.

Maston Wallace may be lucky, but he's also very good. And after Saturday's victory, he was ecstatic. "I'm stoked," he told reporters. "I couldn't be any happier."

The same could be said for Maston's greatly-relieved father, Britt, who stood nearby with a Texas-sized grin on his face during his son's post-event interview.

Girls

Rachel Laurent gets a PR and a gold medal

by Elliot Denman

It wasn't Katie Veith's day.
The Homestead High/Fort Wayne, Indiana senior had won Nike National titles
indoors and outdoors in 2006 and  was bidding to become just the second-ever NIN
two-time pole vault champion.
But three misses at 12-6 ¾ - usually a cinch for Veith - sent her to the
sidelines with a fourth-place performance with a 12-2 ¾ best.
Rachel Laurent, junior at Houma, Louisiana (about an hour from New
Orleans) soared to the top of the NIN heap with a first-attempt
winner of 13 feet, 2 1/2 inches.
"This was my indoor PR (just half an inch below her outdoor best)," said
the Bayou State state champion.
She'd won the state crown last spring with a 13-0 jump in the rain.  And
when she's not vaulting, she's running the sprint relays.
Mansfield, Texas sophomore Shade Weygandt continued to show huge
potential with her silver-medal leap of 12-10 ¾.  Her 13-6 in January was the national
soph record.
Monroe, NY senior Stephanie Duffy snared third at 12-6 ¾.
