Results, story and pix Girls Boys the start by Pete Cava 60 meters: The race was between Jeremy Rankin (Aurora, Colo.), running in lane five, Shane Crawford (Winamac, Ind.) in lane four, and Rynell Parson (San Antonio, Texas) in lane three. Rankin, Crawford and Parson crossed line in a blanket finish, with Justin Murdock (Pasadena, Md.) only a whisker behind. Rankin had no idea who the winner was, and neither did any one else until the results flashed on the scoreboard. But even then, Rankin didn't think he was the victor. “I saw Parson at the finish,” he said. “And I wasn't sure who won. When the times came up [on the scoreboard], I thought I got second. But then they readjusted the times.” The scoreboard showed Rankin, the sophomore, first in 6.71 with Crawford second in 6.72 and Parson in third place at 6.75. Fourth place went to Rowland in 6.78 – not exactly a race for the faint-hearted. When it finally sunk in that the was the victor, Rankin broke into a smile that brightened the whole track. “I've been working on this since August,” he said, heading off to the awards stand with Crawford, Parson and Murdock, all of them probably wondering what might have happened if the race been just a meter longer.

Girls Call her the Crown Victoria by Elliott Denman Call her the Crown Victoria of the national scholastic sprinting world. Victoria Jordan showed a lot more acceleration than the long-gone automobile bearing her hometown's name - Desoto, Texas - and blazed to the NIN crown in 7.33 seconds. Short sprints are not supposed to be determined by gaps as wide as 0.15 seconds - but this one was. Leaving a quality field in her slipstream, Jordan, a junior, lived up to her stats which showed she had the nation's fastest time of 7.24 coming in. Ashley Cruder, the Aurora, Colorado senior who checked in as defending champion - she'd run 7.36 here last year - settled for second in 7.48, and was trailed in by Matthews, NC's Gabrielle Glenn (7.56) and Chesterfield, Va.'s Shanneka Claiborne (7.58.) Morning action saw 58 runners going 11 races to whittle the field to 18 semifinalists. Making early statements were heat winners Jordan (7.47), Cruder (7.64), Arlington, Texas's LaKeidra Stewart (7.64) and Claiborne (7.65.)
The lines were soon drawn for the six-runner final with Jordan (7.34), Glenn (7.53) and Claiborne (7.57) advancing as semi winners and Cruder (7.56), Elmsford, NY's Trisha Hawthorne (7.61) and Stewart (7.67) on time. the start
