| Results, pix and stories Girls Boys by Pete Cava Finals After a calamitous semifinal heat, where he hit the final hurdle and crashed, Johnny Dutch (Clayton, N.C.) had a shot at redemption in the slow heat of the two-section final. Dutch won his heat in 7.73, and then sat back and watched the fast race unfurl. Each of the six finalists in the second section knew they were running against Dutch, in spirit if not in person. Brandon Ames (Cheyenne, Wyo.), running in lane one, finished first in 7.78 – a good time, but not good enough. Ames wound up second in the composite standing. “It's all right, said Ames, resigned to runnerup status despite winning the fast section. “I wanted to finish first. I wanted to run and do well, but . . . it wasn't first place.” Dutch was pleased with his performance, especially under the circumstances. “My knee was still hurting from the fall,” he said. “But it was a great race, even if it wasn't the fast heat.” Second section, won by Brendan Ames WY.
Semis Three heats, with winners plus the next three fastest times advancing to Sunday's final. 1st semifinal: In a stunning development, Johnny Dutch (Clayton, N.C.) tripped and fell, finishing in 8.37. His best time is 7.83. Dutch, last year's third-place finisher, had a poor start and trailed heading toward the finish. Dutch, running in lane four, banged into the last barrier and fell. He still has a shot in the slow heat later in the day. Michael Hancock (Denver, Colo.) was first in 7.94, with runnerup Charlton Rolle (Winston-Salem, N.C.) also reaching the final a time of 7.97. 2nd semifinal: Wayne Davis (Raleigh, N.C.), a sophomore, took first in 7.86 – the fastest time of the semis. Also advancing were Terry Prentice (Pomona, Calif.) in 7.88 and Brendan Ames (Cheyenne, Wyo.) in 7.95. 3rd semifinal: Fate was kinder to Josh Hembrough (Ada, Mich.) than it was to Johnny Dutch, the other favorite. Hembrough glided home first in 7.99 to advance.
Prelims 60 meter hurdles – first round: With eleven heats, winners plus the next seven fastest advance to semifinals later in the day. 1st heat: Brendan Ames (Cheyenne, Wyo.) was the winner in 7.94, followed by Tykeen Fulton (Trenton, N.J.). 2nd heat: Oscar Spurlock (Dallas, Texas) was first in 8.05. 3rd heat: Johnny Dutch (Clayton, N.C.), one of the pre-meet favorites, zipped over the hurdles in 7.98. 4th heat: Wayne Davis (Raleigh, N.C.) won in 8.04. 5th heat: Adams Abdulrazaaq (Richmond, Va.) was firstin 8.12, followed by Michael Hancock (Denver, Colo.) in 8.15. 6th heat: Another favorite, big Josh Hembrough (Ada, Mich.), qualified in 7.94. 7th heat: Charlton Rolle (Winston-Salem, N.C.) rode home first in 8.03, just ahead of Ray Stewart (Union City, Calif.), timed in 8.06 8th heat: Shane Wells (Brownstown, Mich.) won in 8.25. 9th heat: In the round's closest finish, Phillip Bush (Spencer, N.C.) won in 8.11, with Terry Prentice (Pomona, Calif.) right on his heels at 8.12. Also advancing was third-placer Jonathan Bostick (Salisbury, N.C.), who was timed in 8.28. Prentice, the winner of Saturday's pentathlon, is also entered in Sunday's long jump. 10th heat: Jamele Mason (Spring, Texas) and Brice Myers (Erie, Pa.) both advanced. Mason's time was 8.06 to 8.21 for Myers. 11th heat: Korel Mack (Winston-Salem, N.C.) took first in 8.32.

Detroit, MI DNF 3 Girls Jackie Coward came armed and ready by Elliot Denman The junior flash from Knoxville, Tennessee's West High School came to Landover as the national record-holder at 8.17 and gave her own record a very good tussle. But the meet results weren't a total success. While she obliterated the meet record (8.36 by Canada's Perdita Felicien - a future World champion -in 1999) with an 8.28 runaway, she fell a tad short of her own national mark. Then again, she's got another year to go - and who knows? - maybe she'll take some more huge chunks out of all the record books before she's done. Wesley Chapel, Florida senior Teona Rodgers took second in 8.40, with Liberty, SC's sizzling freshman, Jasmine Stowers, a noteworthy third in 8.50. But nobody's perfect. "I think I had trouble kicking out (the lead leg), and then I had problems with my trail leg," Coward said. "So I know I have plenty of room for improvement. I'll be back here next year for sure." Coward was by far speediest of the 65-runner field through the 12 sections of the opening round with an 8.51. Impressing, too, were Rodgers at 8.63, Knoxville East's Bianca Blair at 8.68 and Stowers at 8.72. Two-time NIN pentathlon champion Ryann Krais advanced in 8.84. It took a 9.12 for the top 18 to advance and that 18th spot was decided by going into the thousandths - the 18th, 19th and 20th runners at 9.113, 9.115 and 9.116, respectively.
