Results - Boys Story by Pete Cava, Girls Story by Elliott Denman Midlothian, Va. coach Stan Morgan exulted with his athletes. "This is just icing on the cake," he declared after his anchor runner, Mary Miller crossed the line far in front and stopped the timing apparatus at 21:00.56. But the emotions of it all quickly changed after officials initially disqualified Midlothian and then - after long discussions with meet top brass - reinstated the Chesterfield County, Virginia squad. Morgan was filled with delight, early and late, as the win was finally clarified. "We won our state meet (Virginia's 3-A) last weekend for the first time, and we did it with nine distance runners," he said. " That was really something and this was a bonus." Sophomore Paige Johnston's 5:12.2 opening mile put Midlothian fourth and her team stayed in the mix with junior Erin Stehle's 5:30.6 second leg. It was time to get down to business now and junior Samantha Dow pushed the pace to 5:12.6 and senior Miller brought it home with a 5:05 effort. Back of Midlothian, though, much confusion reigned. The Westfield, Indiana Sisu Club's third runner, Breanne Ehrmann, was sent out on the track a lap early and wound up running just over 1,800 meters. Some other teams may have been out a lap early, as well. "It wasn't my fault," said Ehrmann. "The official just sent me out there. I knew we had another lap to go." The final ruling: special medals for running in a special category to the Westfielders. Kinetic Track Club/ Saratoga Springs, NY, had won this race four straight years...but, after all the dust had cleared, settled for second place this time around. One thing that was undisputed: Episcopal High won the first section in 21:14.57. Boys 4xMile: The Jackalope Running Club (Pinckney, Mich.) battled Kellenburg Memorial (Uniondale, N.Y.) for much of the race. A showdown between anchormen Kasey Geller for the New Yorkers and Jackalope's Mike Katsefaras decided the outcome. Geller pulled in front of Katsefaras with three laps to go. Heading into the bell lap, the blue-and-yellow clad Geller put on a kick that Katsefaras, a junior, couldn't match. Geller turned in an unofficial 4:32.8 split as Kellenburg Memorial won in 18:13.71. Katsefaras and the Jackalopes settled for second in 18:15.48, with Hermitage High School (Richmond, Va.) third in a hand-timed 18:16.0. "We were thinking top three coming in," said Geller, who will head to LaSalle this fall. "We had great second and third laps that put us in contention. I just drafted, and took it out on the backstraight." Geller was the only upperclassman in Kellenburg Memorial's lineup. Preceding him were William Posch, a sophomore, and juniors Thomas Elnick and Michael Elnick.
