2006 Foot Locker Northeast region - Boys
Nov. 25, 2006 Van Cortlandt Park, New York City
Results - Marc Davis video - Pennsylvania boys - by John Nepolitan One of the most anticipated races of the 2006 cross-country season would be the showdown for the 10 slots on the Northeast team for the Footlocker Finals, with any one of a number of runners with a legitimate chance of winning, and even more with a shot at making the trip to San Diego. In many cases, showdowns like today’s race develop into slow tactical affairs and, with a slow first mile, it seemed that this would be the case and any chance at meet or course records would be gone.
In what seems to have been the pattern in the fall of 2006, a day of heavy rain prior to race day would have all worrying about the course conditions, but by race day the course had dried out and temperatures were pleasant – even on the verge of being warm. From the gun a large pack of over 13 runners positioned themselves toward the front with many of the pre-race favorites seemingly looking at each other. Passing approximately ¾ of a mile around “the falts” of Van Cortlandt Park, across the front of the lead pack were 2005 finalists Sintayehu Taye (Cushing Academy, Ma) and Brian Rhodes-Devey (Guilderland, NY); 2004 Finalist Tom Gruenewald (Fayatteville-Manlius, NY), the Van Cortlandt 2.5 mile course record holder; Steve Murdock (Shenendehowa, NY); Brandon Jarrett (St. Benedicts, NJ); and undefeated Craig Forys (Colts Neck, NJ). As the race headed up the “cowpath,” and out of site of the large crowd, it would only be a matter of time before the real racing would begin and the race would explode. | Craig Forys wins in 15:15.1 New Jersey star, who has been setting meet records all year, just misses another one (15:14 by Anthony Smith in 1982). |
A slow first mile, 4:50, lost none of the pre-race favorites or those who hoped they had a chance to steal a place in the top 10 and a trip to sunny San Diego. Up “freshman hill” to the famed “bridge,” Taye was at the front. Rhodes-Devey, looking the best he has all season, was on his right shoulder and Forys was on his left. Poised right behind was Murdock, a pre-race favorite in 2005 who had fallen at the FLNE race and was unable to finish while running for Saratoga, and Gruenewald. Working his way up to toward the front of the lead pack was Matt Centrowitz, 3-time Maryland state champ. But still, little had changed as a large group still had contact, and any one of a number of runners still were California Dreaming as they headed into “the back hills.” Surely there major action would take place that would decide the outcome of the race.
Truly alone and out of contact from the fans, running up and down the series of hills that mark the middle portion of the famed course, the field would slowly get slimmed down as Forys moved into a more dominant position at the front of the pack. A 10:10 2 mile split had taken the field down to 13 still in contention. Forys, who has set 6 meet and course records already in 2006, crested the last major hill with approximately 1 mile to go and launched his attack that he hoped would take him to victory and wipe out the memory of his 2005 failure to qualify for the trip to San Diego. With his sub 4:10 mile speed, Forys was simply able to turn his legs over faster than his pursuers. He pulled away from the field and looked to be on his way to an easy victory. Approaching “the bridge,” Forys held a 20 meter lead with a pack of Centrowitz, Murdock, Taye, Gruenewald and Rhodes-Devey now seemingly locked into qualifying slots. While others appeared to be on cruise control, Centrowitz and Taye went on the offensive and began chasing the leader. Charging down the final hill on the course and onto “the flats” once again, Centrowitz had caught Forys with Taye right beind. Now along the long flat final 800 meter path to the finish lined entirely with fans, Forys would dig down one more time to put a final stamp on what many are calling the finest season by a Garden State cross country runner and go for the win. Centowitz’s major effort to get back to the leader and Forys’ counter attack would drop the Penn Relays 3000 champion. Centrowitz struggled home, but still had more than enough to earn his trip to the west coast. Taye would now take up the fight and try to move up one spot from his 2005 runner-up finish. Side-by-side, the Michigan-bound Forys and the junior Taye, who missed the 2006 outdoor track season with injury and raced sparingly during cross country, would run until the final 50 meters. Forys made one last push for the line and the win while Taye noticeably backed off and surrendered the victory. Forys broke the tape in 15:15.5, moving him to #3 on the Van Cortlandt Park 5000 meter list and #2 in meet history, while Taye’s 15:18.5 would move him to #8 on the course all time list. With the winner decided, all attention quickly shifted to who would earn the final 8 spots on the Northeast squad. While the battle raged up front for the win, New York’s big three who had banged heads the last 2 weeks in state competition, seemed very content to just get to the finish. Gruenewald took 3rd, Murdock (who will race NTN next week) 4th, and BRD 7th. Centrowitz lost 7 seconds to the winner in the last 800 meters, but still held onto 5th with New England Champ Donn Cabral (Glastonbury, Ct) coming home 6th. Always among the leaders, Brandon Jarrett (St Benedicts, NJ) – who may have been the most rested athlete coming into the weekend since he is not allowed to compete for a New Jersey Championship because his school is not part of the State Association – would move from 9th at the bridge to a safer 8th place at the finish. The battle for the final two qualifiers would find two runners holding on to punch their ticket west. As the field headed back to the bridge around 1000 meters to go, Ryan Collins (Mansfield, Ma) was poised in 8th place while Paul Springer (Unionville, Pa) was nearby – despite struggling with a tight left hamstring, as he told penntrackxc.com’s Don Rich, as a result of a substitute teacher forcing him to lift weights earlier in the week. Both had enough distance all any pursuers to feel somewhat safe. Down the final straight Springer would be able to reel in Collins to claim 9th while the Mass all-state champ, running for the first time on such a stage, would grab the final invitation to the National meet in 2 weeks. Once again, the near perfect racing weather of the 2006 cross country season would help in re-writing the recordbooks as the top 6 would all earn spots on the top 25 all time list for the Van Cortlandt Park 5000 meter layout. Post Race Quotes: Craig Forys – On the finish straight when Centrowitz passed him - “ I was actually reliving the Manhattan Invitational, when Steve (Murdock) came around me. I kind of focused on that long straightaway and not making a move too early because it is a long way to the finish line.” On his unsuccessful past at Van Cortlandt Park – “I have usually had trouble here. The Manhattan Invitational this year was pretty much my only good race. It was physiologically hard to get over since I bombed here last year. I did not feel too comfortable coming in.” On how the race unfolded- “It stayed pretty tight the whole way besides when I pulled away on the downhill (just past 2 miles). My buddy Tim said that there was still a pack of like 13 guys behind me about 25 yards back at that point.” Sintayehu Taye – “Feels great (to be going back to San Diego)…”With my injuries and all, I had 3 weeks off in the beginning of the season so I am just now coming back. So this is good, really good, and looking forward to heading back to San Diego.” Steve Murdock – “I went into this race just wanting to qualify and for most of the race it was all pretty packed, so I knew I was going to have to try and put more effort that I expected.” Brian Rhodes-Devey- “I’m real happy to be going back. Things were a bit up and down this season. I ran into some IT band problems and some Achilles trouble. States was just really an off day; it just happens sometimes. But the week after states I ran a 9:08 full 2 mile time trial by myself and that really helped my confidence. I would have liked to have placed a little higher today, but I am thrilled just to be going. Once I crossed the bridge and looked back, and didn’t see anybody behind me, I shifted into neutral and enjoyed the ride. I think this is the year that the Northeast comes back to its glory. We had a rough few years finishing dead last and I think this is the year to change it ” Tom Gruenewald – “I’m excited. I just want to finish off my season well. It’s been a steady progression up and I have been getting faster and faster. I just really want to come with all my weapons out in San Diego and just be proud of myself at the end of the season.” Brandon Jarrett-“I am completely rested since we didn’t have a race before this … (I had) two weeks of tapering and just relaxing. It’s beyond words (making it to San Diego), and I have another chance next year too, but I cannot wait till California.” Paul Springer (courtesy of Don Rich of penntrackxc.com)- "Second was the same as 10th, moving onto San Diego.” PA report by Don Rich, penntrackxc.com Paul Springer survives early week hamstring tweak to advance. McNally falls, but looks forward to next year. Weller falls too. All make all-Northeast teams. It was a rough day for three of PA's top runners. And it wasn't just the competition. State AAA runner-up, senior Paul Springer of Unionville survived his brush with a school-assigned, ill-timed lifting session this past Monday to finish 9th in 15:31.9 and earn one of the coveted spots at Foot Locker Nationals in two weeks. Vince McNally, the Conestoga Valley junior, overcame a fall early in the race, and a brush with a Foot Locker announcer going by the finish line just after the start, to take 13th in 15:41.9. And Boyertown senior Jason Weller, the AAA State Champ, took a spill in the woods, and never really had his legs under him. He would finish 23rd in 15:52.9. Springer was out well in the top group that hit the mile in a surprisingly moderate 4:50 (considering the assembled talent and weather). He was worried about only two things: how his sore left hamstring would react to the hills, and finishing in the top ten. The prior Monday, a substitute teacher had assigned lifting. During the week, his leg tightened up. Throw in a brisk pace and rolling ups and downs, and you have the potential for problems. Springer was comfortably in the top ten at the bridge and carefully monitored his position during the back hills. He saw eventual winner Craig Forys of Colts Neck NJ take off at the top of the hill at two miles. At about 4000 meters, Springer was back in 10th, but took care of business before the finish... "I picked off one toward the finish for 9th." He took it easier than he would have if fully healthy. "The hamstring felt OK, except on the downhills. As far as I'm concerned, 9th is the same as first." Springer is looking forward to Balboa Park, a course he believes favors his running style. And with two weeks to work out the kinks in his hamstring, he is confident he can contribute to a Northeast team win. Springer had trained through PA States with Foot Lockers in mind. Before Friday's walk-through, Conestoga Valley junior Vince McNally had never seen the course at Van Cortlandt Park. By the time he finished in 13th place in his first race ever at the storied course. he was sure he could improve in a year. His first 600 meters turned out to be his roughest. Just after the start he went down and hit the dirt on both knees. No problem, just jump back up and get into it again. But passing the finish line on the way to the first turn, he got pushed toward the announcer giving the runners instructions and actually had to leap between the announcer and the amplifier to keep from tripping over the wire. He survived, and says he doesn't think the early incidents had any effect on his race. McNally entered the woods in about 20th, coming through in 4:56. "It was slower than I anticipated. That was good after the start I had." He worked the hills in the woods and was in 11th when exiting with 700 meters to go. "I went for it. That was my only option. I tried to get turnover, but I wasn't making up any ground. Then two guys went by me. They were racing for the spirit of it, I guess." "It's a good experience. These are tough guys up here. You almost have to be on your A game the whole year to be in it." As for 2006... "I did beat some guys that had beaten me." This winter it's no basketball and no swimming. He'll rest and then go to work on his base, maybe running one or two indoor meets near his home. There was no hamstring injury or rough start for Boyertown senior Jason Weller. Talking with PennTrackXC's Hannah Granger, Weller said he didn't feel like his legs were completely under him by the hills, but went for a top place after crossing the bridge. Unfortunately, he was tripped up and fell. While acknowledging the high level of competition at the race, Weller said the scheduling of the PA state meet three weeks earlier than Foot Lockers "makes it hard to race well after peaking to win States." But walking away with a medal in such an elite race, he acknowledged, was "quite an accomplishment."
