Friday's record chasers push the limit

Erassa's effort just the tip of the iceberg as all-time lists get a shakeup

Kirubel Erassa promised a serious record attempt at The Reg Friday and he delivered – at least in terms of effort.

But it was only the tip of the iceberg.

Four of the seven championship finals, during the first of three days of the Nike Indoor Championships, produced performances that were US#3 all-time or better. There were five US#1 marks for indoor 2009-10 – the other two were very close – and three meet records.

And the thrills came in many ways. There were virtuoso solo efforts, like Erassa’s 14:19.82 5k, where he lapped the field en route to a #2 all-time performance – and like weight throwers Melissa Kurzdorfer (#3 all-time 61-04) and Alec Faldermeyer (85-10.50), who won by five and 15 feet, respectively. There were fantastic finishes, like the one that saw Hamden CT anchor Chris FitzSimons bring his DMR crew home in 10:07.58, leading a mind-boggling seven teams at 10:09 or better – and like the 32-second last lap that Lindsay Crevoiserat dropped in her meet record 16:51.88 5k (#3 all-time).

And there was the show of power from the legendary Saratoga, N.Y. program; the Kinetic RC DMR quartet put together a staggering 11:38.60 – another meet record and #3 all-time.

It was yet another instance of athletes daring to be great at Nike Indoor, succeeding in stunning fashion, then playing a collective game of “can you top this.”

Erassa wanted it bad

If you had to name an athlete of the day, it would probably have to be Erassa. Yet he was the least delighted with his performance. “I wanted so bad,” he said, “this record.” The record was Lukas Verzbicas’ 14:18.42 5000 USR from this meet last year. The Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) senior was motivated by everything from his less-than-hoped-for 8th at Foot Locker Finals to an amazing 1600-800-3200 triple last weekend that included a 9:05.47 at the end.

Erassa went out hard from the start, hitting 65 and 2:12 – not as crazy as Verzbicas’ start last year, but more than fast enough. Chenango Valley (Binghamton, N.Y.) senior star Max Straneva – a fine runner himself who was New York Feds champ last fall – tried to keep with him, but would fall off (en route to a runner-up finish in 15:04.93). Erassa then settled into the 34-35 second laps he would need to challenge the record. He went through the 1600 in 4:29, halfway at 7:03, and hit the 3k and 3200 marks at 8:29 and 9:03. Lapping most (eventually all) of the field early in the third mile kept him going, but he finally fell off by running 73- and 72-second 400s before the bell. That put him in a position to have to kick hard on the last lap and while Erassa is a great kicker, he was seriously gassed. He managed a 32+ final circuit, but it wasn’t enough.

Still, it was an exceedingly impressive performance that Erassa finally had to at least halfway acknowledge. It was his first indoor race ever and his first 5k on the track. The fans got behind him and he did all he could, though he probably went out a little too fast. “I wanted this race bad,” he said. “The people pumped me up.”

Erassa got the crowd revved up but the tone had been set earlier in the girls 5k. As his her wont, Grand Blanc (Grand Blanc, Mi.) junior Gabriella Anzalone blasted into the lead from the gun and stretched out the field with sub-16:30 pacing early on. Crevoiserat, the Glastonbury (Glastonbury, Ct.) junior who ran 10:30.55 for 2 miles at New Englands last week, was undaunted and stuck with Anzalone from the get-go. Highland (Blackwood, N.J.) junior Megan Venables gave some level of chase which led to her running most of the race alone, and the rest of the pack let them go.

Anzalone slowed in the second mile and Crevoiserat became more and more comfortable on her shoulder. She did try and pass the Michigan runner once mid-race, but Anzalone held her off. But there was no holding her off at the end, as Crevoiserat pulled away after 4800 and closed with a ridiculous 32 for the last 200. “I usually have a good kick,” she said, “but it’s usually 34 or 35.

“I’ve never run the 5k on the track,” she added, “but my dad told me the record was 16:43 and we thought I could get close to it. I tried to run 2-mile pace and keep strong. I thought I had a chance to win here, but I knew it would be tough and there would be a lot of competition from girls I didn’t know.”

Stunning DMRs

The distance medley relays lived up to expectations – with the girls race being the Shen-Saratoga (Kinetic) battle that was anticipated and the boys race turning out as close as seeding indicated. But it was how they got there and what the final results were that made them races for the ages.

The girls race saw Amanda Burroughs set the tone for Kinetic, attacking her 1200 leg and not letting up. She passed off in 3:34.7 with a 3-second lead over Shen’s Danika Simonson. Shen’s Kathleen Klein (58.7) pushed hard on the first lap of her 400 leg to try and catch Kinetic quarter-miler Margaret McDonald (59.7), but only gained one second back. Shen junior Alexandra Burtnick, however, exploded out of her exchange to quickly reel in Toga senior Brianne Bellon. It looked like the perfect setup for Shen closer Lizzie Predmore.

Bellon stayed right with Burtnick, though. She tried to pass her in the third lap, but was rebuffed. Then Bellon attacked again and Burtnick couldn’t respond. The Kinetic veteran was off and running to a 2:13.3 split and handed off to anchor Keelin Hollowood with a six-second lead.

Predmore still had a shot, and in the middle of the 1600 leg took a few seconds off the gap and got it down to four. She would need a good kick, but it still seemed like she was closing. The final 400, however, was a different story. Predmore’s pace dropped off and Hollowood had something left. As the Toga freshman streamed around in the final 100, it suddenly became clear that she wasn’t just going to win – and decisively – but was going to carry her club to a time that would hammer Hammer TC’s (Southern Regional, N.J.) meet record. She crossed the tape with the clock showing a jaw-dropping 11:38.60.

It was an amazing performance – a US#1, meet record, #3 all-time and, maybe most impressively, a school record. Kinetic clubs have history’s top two times in the 4x1 Mile relay and had three DMRs in history’s top 20 – all sub-11:50 marks. But Burroughs, McDonald, Bellon, and Hollowood (4:50.8) ran nine seconds faster than any Kinetic team before them.

“Our goal was to come in here and win,” said Bellon, the only senior of the bunch. “We knew we had a good time and if we were all ‘on’ at the same time, we could win and run a fast time.”

The wild boys DMR was a stunning drama that unfolded in several chapters. First, it was soph phenom Zavon Watkins, inserted in the 1200 opening leg by Liverpool, showing his talent. He went out ahead in 58, slowed to 2:02 and 2:34 at 800 and 1k and seemed to be caught in a serious fade, but then kicked home in 28 for a 3:02.9. Western Branch, Va. had been second and 400 man Keenan Smith bolted ahead of Liverpool’s Chris Clemons on the first lap, but Clemons waited and regained the lead on lap two.

Cameron Cipcic took the baton for Western Branch on the 800 leg, and took the lead back after a lap, but was reeled in by Liverpool, then Warwick Valley and others. By the handoff, five teams were suddenly in the battle, but that was only the beginning.

Warwick and Western Branch started off in the lead on the final 1600 leg, but the shifting pack behind them grew from three teams, then to four. With his 4:07 talent, Troy, Mi. (Breen TC) anchor Michael Atchoo came from way, way back and it was an 7-team race going into the final two laps.

The most dangerous runner, though, was Hamden, Ct. senior FitzSimons, who has great range – from 1:20.63 600 speed, 2:27.15 1k ability, and 4:17.33 mile endurance. He lurked in the pack, getting himself into position, then struck with 300 to go. No one could get him on the final lap and with a gleeful smile he raised his arms at the tape. He had split 4:09.5 for 1600 and brought his team home in the aforementioned 10:07.58, making Hamden #7 all-time.

The flood of finishers behind them was even more amazing: Warwick in a NY state record 10:08.50, Liverpool in 10:08.52, Western Branch in 10:09.06, Breen in 10:09.20, Deluge XC (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) in 10:09.25, and Grafton, Va. in 10:09.40. That’s seven of the top 16 performances of all time. Atchoo, who had to work too hard to come back to have a kick, had the best split of 4:07.8.

FitzSimons celebrated by getting sick in a nearby trash can. “I’ve had a stomach bug and the flu in the past week,” he said, as senior teammates Nick Saba (1200), Tevin Moye (400) and Isaiah Whiting (800) looked on. Getting back to the race, he added, “I like sitting on people; I usually don’t like leading. I wanted to wait to start my kick until 200 to go, but I wound up going sooner than that.”

Throwers wanting more

Like Erassa, weight throw winners Kurzdorfer and Faldermeyer weren’t wholly satisfied with their dominant wins, though their displeasure was much less passionate. Both got out big early throws, with Kurzdorfer getting her 61-04 winner on her first attempt. That moved her to #3 all-time and back ahead of Shelby Ashe for US#1. Already US#1 and #3 all-time, Faldermeyer hit 85-10.50 on his 2nd throw. That’s second only to his own 86-03.50.

Both saw all of their five fair throws exceed the best the competition had to offer. But their victory smiles showed a little bit of regret: They didn’t meet their goals or break the records they were after.

“I wanted to come out and open up with a big throw,” said Kurzdorfer. “I was chasing the national record (62-02); I have been all season. This was my second-to-last chance … (after the big throw) I almost started to try too hard. My technique got out of hand.”

“Today, I really, really wanted the record,” said Faldermeyer, referring to the 86-05.50 New York state record owned by Walter Henning, also #2 all-time. “But I probably had my best series; I didn’t foul anything. It was a solid meet.”

Both know more competition awaits them in New York Sunday. Faldermeyer will face the year’s two other 80-footers – Davis Fraker and Justin Welch – and Kurzdorfer will be tested by fellow 60-footers Ashe and Daina Levy.

There was some disappointment in the high jump, but it was confined to those below the top of the podium. US#1 Emily Kianka (5-11) was one of three with PRs of 5-10 or better that couldn’t get beyond 5-09.25. “It just wasn’t my day,” said Kianka. She indicated she felt a little rusty having not jumped in two weeks (since the NJ Meet of Champs). Regarding her last attempt at 5-10.75: “That last one, I thought I had it. I don’t even know what I hit it with.”

Medina (Medina, Ohio) senior Taylor Burke also hit it on her 2nd attempt at 5-10.75, but it stayed on, making her US#2 on the year. “I clipped it with my heels,” she said. Burke, coming off her basketball season, had only jumped in one meet prior to Friday, but she won it at 5-10 and was ready. “I was a little intimidated by this field, but I had confidence in myself.”

It takes confidence to dare to be great, and Friday’s stars at Nike Indoor had it in spades.
