N. Central boys, Jesuit girls prevail; Nist leads surprising BK girls to 2nd

Lead story by Dave Devine, DyeStat senior editor

On a cold, blustery day at Eagle Island State Park outside Boise, Idaho, the US#6 Jesuit OR (Crusader Harriers) girls delivered on a season’s-worth of promise by earning their second NXN Northwest regional title in a row, while the US#3 North Central WA (North Spokane XC) boys proved they’ve weathered the graduation of three top runners from a national championship squad by following senior Ben Johnston across the line to their third straight regional title.

As they have all year, the Jesuit harriers were led by junior Annamarie Maag, matching her 2008 NXN NW finish with an 18:08.5 runner-up effort on a day when she struggled to stay warm on the windswept course.  The Crusaders managed 106 points for the win, well off their 47-point tally from 2008, but more than enough to hold off surprising second place squad Bishop Kelly ID (Knights RC), who scored 125.

The Knights were fronted by the new “Queen” of the Eagle Island course, sophomore Emily Nist, who scored a big win over the previously undefeated Maag and lowered the record on the frequently-contested layout to 17:57.4.  The previous mark of 17:58.6 was set at last year’s regional meet by then-senior Alyssa Andrews of Gig Harbor WA.

Nist, the Idaho 4A state champion, helped her team secure an automatic berth to the NXN Finals in Portland with her breakthrough run.

“We had a really good feeling that we would be able to qualify,” Nist said. “We were nervous waiting for the results, and when they announced them we were so excited because we knew all of our hard work over the summer and through the fall paid off.  It felt good to show people that we’re for real.”

NW#2 Shadle Park WA (Spokane Hilanders) and NW#3 Glacier Peak WA (Harambee Stars) were 3rd and 4th, respectively, ensuring they will be considered for the four at-large bids extended nationwide.

If Nist’s triumph was a revelation, boys’ winner Johnston made his victory appear workmanlike, picking up where former teammate and 2008 individual champion Jeff Howard left off last year.  Johnston accelerated away from a pack of five on the second loop through the course’s Foxtrail path, drawing clear for a comfortable 15:29.6 win.

“We got here and we saw Jeff’s name on a poster [of last year’s winners],” Johnston said. “It kind of made me smile and I started thinking, ‘What if next year my name was up there?  How cool would that be?’”

Not only did Johnston ensure his name will reside under Howard’s on the list of NXN Northwest winners, he helped guarantee that for another year, at least, the only team name on the three year-old list of Boys Championship winners will be North Central WA.

Bellevue WA (Wolverine XC) senior Michael Williams—ninth at the recent Washington 3A state meet—was a surprise runner-up as he moved convincingly in the homestretch to hold off Ferris WA (South Side Harriers) top gun Adam Thorne, 15:44.5 to 15:46.1.  Thorne’s third place effort started the scoring for his US#4 team, which trailed North Central in the final standings, 93-104, but still punched their ticket to the Finals at Portland Meadows.

Oregon state champions Crater (Crater Comet XC) from the 5A classification, and Central Catholic (Stark Street AC) of 6A, finished 3rd and 4th in the team scoring, also leaving them as possible candidates for at-large bids.
