The annual DyeStat Elite XC Individual Top 25 series (formerly Foot Locker Favorites and renamed given additional options available now) are national and regional rankings of cross-country runners based on distance-running accomplishments to date, with an emphasis on XC and 3200/2M track results, rather than a projection of how the Foot Locker Finals or NXN Finals will turn out (predictions run later in the season).

As was expected, Mt. SAC had a huge impact in the rankings as there were eight changes of three or more positions each from the race.  The upwardly mobile:
  • Arcadia CA jr Ammar Moussa – His victory (14:34 for 2.91M) basically puts him up there with Elias Gedyon (#7 behind Gedyon’s #6).  With an unbeaten record and the Team Sweeps win off an injury, Elias gets the slight edge
  • Edison CA sr Matt McElroy – His well-documented tumble at the bottom of the last big hill at Mt. SAC didn’t keep him from finishing an outstanding 2nd to Gedyon in the Team Sweeps (14:37).  He moves up 13 spots to #9
  • Sierra Lutheran NV sr Wade Meddles – The best of three major forays to CA (Stanford, Clovis before) saw him with an outstanding 3rd in the Individual Sweeps, two seconds behind McElroy
  • San Pedro CA sr Pablo Rosales – Previously in the honorable mention category, he takes a big jump to the big time (15th) with his 4th in the Individual Sweeps, beating four Top 25ers
While Moussa’s margin over Heyden Wooff in the Team Sweeps race was fairly substantial (14 sec.), the Individual Sweeps displayed just how close California’s top talent is.  The top 6 (5 Californians) finished within 7 seconds.  On a given day, 5th-place Erik Olson might have been 2nd or higher, for example.  Fast-improving Patrick Henry CA sr Kellen Blumberg also made a good case for rankings inclusion in 6th with his 14:42.

Beyond Mt SAC – A relatively quiet week in terms of rankings-changing races.  But North Central IN soph Futsum Zeinasellassie IN probably ran as well as anyone outside of Mt. SAC.  His 15:16.5 and 21-second victory over many of Indiana’s best in the Carmel Semi-State looked an awful lot look the Futsum that kept building momentum all the way to San Diego last fall, where he was 7th.  Bumped up 3 spots to #12

Newcomer
  • Cherry Creek CO sr Walter Schafer – With some moderate ups and downs this year, Schafer has always been close to the Top 25 if in within the rankings.  An impressive regional meet victory lifts him back.
