The annual DyeStat Elite Top 25 series (formerly Foot Locker Favorites and renamed given additional options available now) are national and regional rankings of cross-country runners based on distance-running accomplishments to date, with an emphasis on XC and 3200/2M track results, rather than a projection of how the Foot Locker Finals or NXN Finals will turn out (predictions run later in the season).

Goethals grabs the top spot ... by a lean

Dec 17, 2009 Girls Rankings (through Dec. 12 meets)

The Top 25

Foot Locker finishes basically decide the top eight

Notes and rankings by SteveU

With the top eight girls in the country at Foot Locker Finals, including the four unbeaten regional champions, it was almost certain the winner would end the season #1.  So it was for Megan Goethals, the pre-meet #2 Rochester MI senior with one of the most beastly kicks in meet history.  Her smoking final 200 meters enabled her to overtake #3 Chelsey Sveinsson TX – who started the year at #1 – and uphold her status as the top returnee from last December’s battle in San Diego.

It’s easy to give the first eight spots to the first eight from Foot Locker as there was really nothing in any of those athletes’ resumes to merit otherwise.  With NXN champ Katie Flood IA taking 8th and teammate Ashlie Decker 9th, it was a no-brainer to follow with Flood, Kathleen Stevens VA, Rebecca Mehra CA, and Decker, since they finished in that order in Portland.

More challenging were the rest of the spots, a mix of finishers from the two nationals that also included some top athletes that performed below their rankings.  With great seasons overall, Californians Molly Grabill and Megan Morgan, and Florida’s Kathryn Fluehr still ranked high.
