Chelsey Sveinsson 16:53, Craig Lutz 14:34 just misses CR

by Brett Honeycutt for DyeStat/ESPN RISE

Texas runners swept the top two spots at the Foot Locker South Regional on Saturday at McAlpine Park – and winners Chelsey Sveinsson and Craig Lutz made it look easy in the end.

Sveinsson showed no signs of the shin splint problems she’s had recently and pulled away in the final 1,000 meters to run 16:53 and win by 16 seconds over Florida 1A champion Kathryn Fluehr (17:09).

“It felt good running,” said Sveinsson, who came through 2 miles with Fluehr and Tennessee 3A champion Megan Ferowich in 10:58, as the trio held a 6 second lead over the rest of the field. “Shin splints don’t bother me when I’m running.”

Sveinsson, who is ranked No. 3 nationally in the DyeStat.com rankings and qualified for Nationals for the third time, said winning was secondary to just running her best.

“You can’t go into a race with the goal to always win,” said Sveinsson, who said several pro athletes had talked to her about that very thing. “Because you can’t win all the time.”

Lutz, the Texas 5A Champion who said he came into the race just to qualify, pulled away just before the 1.5-mile mark (on the course’s infamous hill) and was never challenged after that. He ran 14:34, nearly breaking the course record (14:32, set in 2004 by Andrew Bumbalough, Brentwood Academy, Tennessee). Lutz won by nine seconds over Georgia 5A Champion Kirubel Erassa (14:43).

“I tried to put a big enough gap to get the win,” said Lutz, who said the 4:36 opening mile was too slow and that’s when he decided he would go for the win and not just a top-10 finish. “I held it from there.”

For all of the dominance that Texas has had in the 31-year history of this meet (nine boys have won and eight girls have won the South Regional, including the two wins on Saturday), it was the first time that runners form the Lone Star state had won during the same year.

For Lutz, it was a bit of redemption for the nation’s fifth ranked runner after finishing well back in third at NXN South last week.

“I came out this week to try and rebound from last week and run it the way I planned to run it,” said Lutz, who came through two miles in 9:20. “I felt pretty down from my [NXN Regional] race.”

He seemed to rebound in a big way, but challenging the course record wasn’t on his mind – especially after glancing at the mark on Friday.

“Yesterday we saw the course record and I said, ‘I’m not going to worry about that. Maybe my senior year.’”

But he said he surprised himself, running the second fastest time in history on the famed course by closing the last 600 meters in less than 1 minute, 30 seconds.
