Day 1 - Two National Records in 2k Steeple

Highlights
  • Alyssa Allison MO smashed by more than 10 seconds the USATF youth national record in the 2k steeple (Young Women's division) with a 6:54.37.  Sarah Higgens IN was 2nd, also breaking the meet record with a 7:06.36.
  • Eleanor Fulton CO nipped the USATF youth national record by 0.49 in the Intermediate Girls 2k steeple with a 6:56.97.  Fulton and McKinzie Schulz IL (2nd, 7:12.77) both broke Allison's 2-year-old meet record in this division.
  • Bradley Bolton topped the meet record in the IB hammer with a throw of 209-01.
  • The other hammer titles went to Justin Welch (Young Men's, 194-11), Ashley Clasen (Young Women's, 145-09), and Shana Flanary (Intermediate Girls, 135-10).
  • The boys 2k steeplechase championships were captured by Michael Williams CO (Young Men's, 5:57.63) and Parker Bowles OK (Intermediate, 6:21.15)
  • Dakotah Keys OR didn't win any of the five events, but scored high in each one to take the Day 1 lead in the Young Men's decathlon with 3558 points.  Dan Fleming won the 100 and LJ and held on to 2nd, while Dan Gooris NM used a strong SP and 400 to move into 3rd.  Favored Curtis Beach NM won the high jump, but struggled in some of the others to wind up 5th with five events to go.
  • Lorraine Graham (Vision Elite TC) led the Intermediate Girls Heptathlon after one day with 3009 points. Graham won the 100 hurdles and tied for the high jump, with pursuers Lindsay Vollmer and Chamique Francis (who also won the 200).  Hannah Carson took the shot.
  • Precious Selmon MO had the top spot in the Young Women's Hept after day one with 2845 points.  She won the 100H and 200.  Samantha Collins AZ stayed close with a performance that included the HJ win, and Michelle Anumba threw a huge 43-06 to win the shot.
  • The Youth Boys and Girls Pentathlon tiltes went to Joseph Delgado ID (3061 pts.) and Tika Slay GA (3070 pts.), respectively.
