It's Finally Here ...

After months of anticipation, it’s finally here--the best weekend in track and field, otherwise known as the Penn
Relays
. It’s always dangerous to play the weather “game”, but the forecast is encouraging.

It seems that every edition of the Relays becomes identified with the exploits of an outstanding team or individual.
There was the year that Renaldo Nehemiah drove the crowd wild with his performances on Maryland’s relays, and the
many years that Villanova and Arkansas dominated the men’s races.

Who will make their mark this year. Will it be Yohan Blake, who hopes to lead St.Jago to victory in the boys 4x100
and 4x00? Will this be Texas A&M’s year to shine? Coach Pat Henry was at the helm when LSU won the bulk of their
many titles at Penn, but he’s yet to win at Penn since he took over the head coach’s position at A&M. This year, the
Aggies will be contenders in all three sprint relays--men and women.

Another team ready to grab thee headlines is Texas, which is favored to win the men’s 4x800, 4xmile, and distance
medley relays.

LSU has a unique distinction in the individual events. Their sprinters, Richard Thompson(10.00) and Kelly Ann
Baptiste(11.06) are scheduled to run the 100 at Penn and each has run the respective fastest men’s and women’s time
in the world this year.

There was a buzz early on when it was learned that UCLA (women) and USC were coming all the way from L.A. for
the Relays, but the Trojans have been beset with illness and injuries and have decided to stay home.

Teams from Jamaica are expected to dominate most of the high school relays, while a team from Ohio, Cleveland
Heights, which ran 3:14.06 and 7:40.72 in 2007, could emerge as the top American team in the boys 4x400 and
4x800.

Here is an event-by-event look at the 114th running of the Penn Relays. Bib numbers/letters are listed where available, as well as 2008 bests. Be sure to buy the Penn Relays program--it’s the best in the sport.

finished 3rd at the indoor NCs, but they’ll be runnign here

Kenya Scholar-Athlete Project, which helps place deserving
Kenyan students in U.S. colleges.

69-Olympic Development Steeplechase 7:40pm

College race(2005-2007). “Fam” set the event record of 8:25.02

the British Junior 3k title.

Friday April 27

83-College Men’s 400-meter hurdles 9:00am
South Carolina’s Jussi Heikkila(1) and Albany’s Joe Greene
finished 1-2 in 2007. Looking to spoil a repeat of that finish is
last year’s 3rd-place finisher, Texas A&M’s Nick Robinson(3), who
ran 50.01 at the Texas Relays.
Other contenders who have run under 51-seconds this season:
Auburn’s Reuben McCoy(10-50.44), South Carolina’s Jason
Richardson(5-50.64) and Coppin State’s Steve Delice(4-50.94).

84-87 High School Boys 4x800 Relay Heats
The 12 fastest teams from the four heats advance to the
Championship Final on Saturday (Event #237-3:30pm). It took
8:01.69(07--weather delays), 7:58.62(06), 7:57.79(05), and
7:55.90(04) to qualify for the final the last four years.

84-”Small” Schools Boys 4x800 Relay 9:20am
Holmwood Tech(AA) ran 7:48.27 at the Gibson Relays in
February. Other potential finalists include Morris Hills,NJ(AB-
7:56.11i), Strath Haven,Pa(AC-7:58.22i), West Windsor-Pliansboro
North,NJ(AD-7:59.21i), Campion,JAM(AE-7:59.55), and Metuchen,

7:55.40i), Great Valley,Pa(BC-7:58.66i), Bellefield Comprehensive,

Allen,JAM(BF-7:59.82)

86-”Large” Schools Boys 4x800 Relay 9:40am
This could be one of the greatest heats ever at Penn.
Calabar(CA), which finished 2nd at Penn last year, ran 7:47.35 to
win the big Jamaican matchup at the Gibson Relays in February.
Out for “revenge” is Jamaica College(CD), which had a
15-meter lead in that race with a lap to go when its anchor got
tripped up by a runner who was about to be lapped. The spill
took them out of the race and they finished with a time of 8:08.
Add to the mix strong teams from North Penn,Pa(CB-7:48.99i)
and Kingston College/JAM(CC-7:50.82), which returns all 4
runners from last year’s winning team, and you have the makings

145 College Men’s Distance Medley Champ. 3:50pm
With four teams in contention with a lap to go, last year’s
edition reinforced the reputation of the DMR as the “Signature
Event” of the Penn Relays.

Just as he did in 2006, anchorman Leo Manzano led Texas(AA)
to victory in 2007 and he returns this year to try to make it
three in a row. Erik Stanley(1200) and Jacob Hernandez(800) are
back from last year’s winners, and they are expected to be joined
by freshman Danzell Fortson on the 400 leg.

Manzano, a candidate to make the U.S. Olympic team in the
1500-meters, has a potent kick, and he might need it against a
slew of other talented milers.

Among the teams (and anchors) that might challenge the
NCAA Indoor Champions are Villanova(AB-Bobby Curtis), last
year’s runnerup, Stanford(AC-Russell Brown), Michcigan(AD-Lex
Williams), Georgetown(AE-Andrew Bumbalough), LSU(AF-John
Kosgei), Arkansas(AG-Micky Cobrin), and Providence(AH-Max
Smith).

3:08.61(04) to qualify for the final the last four years.
In the past, teams ran in pre-determined heats, but starting in
2007, teams are now seeded in the “paddock”, the same
procedure used in the 4x100 and 4x200.

enter a team here that would be strong enough to win the gold
medal at the Beijing Olympics. With two U.S. teams scheduled to
run in the USA vs the World event on Saturday, there is likely to
be some changes in personnel changes, but the tentaive lienup

156 High School Boys Mile 5:55pm
It’s hard to imagine a repeat of last year’s classic race, in which
Matthew Centrowitz (Broadneck,Md) set a Relays Record of
4:08.38 and three others broke 4:12, but this year’s field is
pretty strong, with no clear-cut favorite.

Charles White(#3), who finished 3rd in 2006 while he was still a
New Yorker (Garden City) and again last year for his new school in
Colorado(Cherry Creek), ran 4:11.77 to win at the National
Scholastics at NY’s Armory.

Others to watch include Canaidan Kyle Milks(10), who ran the
metric equivalent of a 4:08 mile in 2007, Kyle Merber(1-Half
Hollow Hills West,NY-4:12.42i), Robby Andrews(2-Manalapan,NJ-
4:12.48i), Cory Leslie(%-Perkins,OH), who ran the metric

Indoor Champion at 800-meters, hopes to anchor LSU(AA) to
victory in this event for the 2nd year in a row. Samantha Henry
and Deonna Lawrence also return from last year’s winning team.

Penn State(AB), last year’s runnerup, also returns three
runners, including Shana Cox(400) and Brienne Simmons(800).
Sarah Bowman anchored Tennessee(AC) to victory in 2006 as a
frosh and hopes to lead the Vols back to the winner’s platform.

Others to watch include host Penn(AE), with Jesse Carlin on
the anchor, Florida(AD), and Maryland-Eastern Shore(AG).

160 College Men Sprint Medley Champ. 6:40pm
Florida State(AA) is the defending champion, but the favorite
could be LSU, which has entered a powerful lineup of Armanti
Hayes(200), Richard Thompsn(200), Reggie Dardar(400), and
Jamaal James(800-PR/1:47.00).

Southern Cal would have been a threat, but the team is

Beijing? Most experts are predicting a battle for the gold medal
between the U.S. and Jamaica, which finished 1-2 at last year’s
World Championships in Osaka, Japan.

Tyson Gay, the 2007 World Champion at 100 and 200 meters,
is expected to anchor one of the two U.S. lineups in this race,
and rumor has it that Asafa Powell, the world record holder in the

You know the Penn Relays can’t be too far off once the
Jamaica Boys & Girls Championships take place.
Yohan Blake, the Outstanding Performer at last year’s Relays,
could be in for another big show this year.
He won the Class 1 100-meters in 10.27, ran on St.Jago’s
4x100 team that set a Championship Record of 39.78 in the
qualifying round, and anchored his team to victory in the 4x400
relay.

Not all went well for Blake, though. He finished a surprising
3rd in the 200-meters and his 4x100 teammates never got the
stick to him in the final. Blake reportedly hurt his back during the
100--let’s hope he’s !00% fit by the last weekend in April.
The female star of the meet was Holmwood Tech’s Bobby-
Gaye Wilkins. The 19-year old senior won the Class 1 400(52.46)
and 800(2:10.89), then closed out her weekend with a
sensational 50.8 anchor split that brought her team from 20-
meters down and gave them the win(3:36.44).

The boys’ 400-hurdles was hot, with Keiron Stewart edging
Kingston College teammate Andre Peart, 50.29(=meet record)-
50.44.
