Saturday Highlights
  • Newnan GA junior Chalonda Goodman, who'd previously run 11.43 with no wind instrument, blazed a US#1 11.54 into a 0.8 headwind to win the girls 100, then returned to hit 23.93 (-0.3) to take the 200 as well.
  • Tyler Campbell (Cordova AL) scaled US#3 7-0 to take the boys HJ
  • In an expected distance duel, Mountain Brook AL star Madeline Morgan laid down a US#1 10:29.26 2-mile that was too much for soph Malia Cali (St. Thomas Aquinas LA), who still managed a 10:39.64

  • Daphne AL sr Kyle Smith, already US#2 in JT, dominated with 4 throws between 189-193 feet, winning with 193-05

CHALLENGE OF CHAMPIONS MEET PROMISES TO BE A BARNBURNER

By ARTHUR L. MACK

One of the most popular early-season high school track and field meets takes center stage when the 16th edition of the Mobile Challenge of Champions Track and Field meet comes to Mobile, Alabama this weekend.

The two-day meet, which will bring well over 1,100 athletes representing 100 schools from 18 states, should have some very impressive performances.

Action gets underway on Friday, April 4, with the running of the Open Division at UMS-Wright Prep School. The first events begin at 3 p.m. On Saturday, April 5, the action shifts to St. Paul’s Episcopal School, where action in the Invitational Division gets underway at 1 p.m.

Meet director Steve Schoenewald said that in the years since he has started the meet, he has seen it grow by leaps and bounds.

“It’s hard to believe that we’ve had the meet this long,” he said. “I never thought it would get to be where it is now.”
Some of the out of town schools include Eleanor Roosevelt of Greenbelt, Maryland; Brainerd, Tennessee; and Cahokia, Illinois. For Eleanor Roosevelt, it will be the first time competing in the meet.

“I’m really excited about that,” said Schoenewald.

A pair of World Youth Championships medalists will highlight the invitational division. Kenneth Gilstrap of Miller Grove in Lithonia, Ga., and Chalonda Goodman of Newnan High, located near Atlanta, will compete in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.

Brianna Hubbard of Mundy’s Mill in Jonesboro, Ga., is also expected to be a factor in the sprints. She was an indoor all-American.

In the distances, Cory McGee of Pass Christian, Mississippi and Emily Reese of Chamblee, Ga., are expected to have strong performances as they compete in the mile. Reese won last September’s Challenge of Champions cross-country meet. Another highly regarded distance runner to watch is Mountain Brook (Ala.) star Madeline Morgan, who was the Nike Team Nationals’ individual girls’ cross-country champion. Morgan heads up a strong field in the 2-mile, which includes National Scholastic Indoor champion Malia Cali from Louisiana.

While out of town athletes will be in the spotlight, Mobile area athletes are geared up to have strong performances as well. St. Paul’s Episcopal, for example, has Mary Carleton Johnston in the girls’ 2-mile, Neal Tisher in the girls’ pole vault and the 100-meter hurdles, Johnnie Borries in the girls’ shot put, javelin and 100-meter hurdles, Lee Gilmer in the boys’ mile run, and Mark Barron in the boys’ shot put.

Other top local athletes include Daphne’s Kyle Smith, who is currently ranked second in the boys’ javelin, and Foley’s Julio Jones in the long jump.
