Nico Wailer of Los Gatos, a foreign exchange student from Germany, who was the best under-18 vaulter in the world last year, equaled his nation-leading indoor best with at third try clearance of 17-2. In an attempt to break Pat Manson’s national and meet record of 17-6 ¼ set 23 years ago at the Simplot Games. Weiler gave it a good try including two very good attempts at 17-7 but it was not to be. Corey Shank of Northrop (Ft. Wayne, Ind.), who was the second best under-18 athlete in the world last year, was second at 16-3. Jason Pelletier of Bryan (Ar.) and Blair Wallingford of Roseville (Ca.) tied for third at 15-9. Elliot Beski of the Colorado Flyers (Denver) was fifth at 15-3. Justin Gebeki of East (Cheyenne, Wy.) and Erik Sutterfield (Rock Canyon, Highlands Ranch, Co.), tied for sixth at 14-9.

Junior Shade Weygandt of Mansfield (Tx.), the national leader at 13-8, won with a new Simplot Games record of 13-1 breaking the old mark of 13-0 set by Julene Bailey of Nampa (Id.) in 2003. Weygandt then had the bar raised to 13-5 where she barely knocked the bar off on her third attempt. Lindsay Beard of South (Eugene, Or.) and Elizabeth Storver of Longmont (Co.) both cleared 11-9 with Beard placing second on fewer misses. Danielle Valentine YMCA Team Idaho was fourth and Chelsea Barr of Nampa Christian (Nampa, Id.) was fifth, both at 11-3, followed by Morgan Hartigan of East (Cheyenne, Wy.) in sixth and Alisah Reaser of Cody (Wy), both at 10-9. Rachel Laurent of Vanderbilt Catholic (Houma, La.), the nations No. 2 ranked vaulter, no heighted at her entry height of 12-3.
