Top Utah girls take the battle to Boise
SW#7 Davis UT girls 64, Mountain View UT 86
Shalaya Kipp, Skyline UT 18:28.24 (Danielle Menlove, Jordan UT - 18:28.76)

Girls Race story by Dave Devine, photos by John and Donna Dye

With less than a quarter mile remaining in the Girls Elite race at the 2008 Bob Firman Invitational, it appeared as if Jordan, Utah’s talented freshman, Danielle Menlove (#326, at left), would grab her first major invitational title as a high schooler.  Menlove, who’s been on the national radar for some time after impressive age-group marks as a middle schooler, had battled back and forth with fellow Utahan Shalaya Kipp of Skyline High for the better part of three miles, grabbing and ceding the lead on a chewed-up course which received buckets of rain earlier in the day.  But swinging through a 180-degree turn in the shaded Poplar Lane section of the course, Menlove dropped in a surge that appeared to end any speculation about which runner would prevail.

Menlove and Kipp had raced previously this fall at the BYU Invitational, where Kipp carved out an eight-second victory, running 19:42 to Menlove’s 19:50.  This one was destined to be much closer.  Kicking hard down the homestretch, Kipp reclaimed the ground she’d lost on Poplar Lane and summoned one final move that relegated Menlove to second, less than a tick behind at the line.

Seasoned experience topped youthful exuberance, 18:28.24 to 18:28.76.

“I don’t know where it came from,” Kipp said of her winning kick. “I think she was starting to fall back, and I thought, ‘Well, maybe I have something left.’  She’s a good hill runner, so I kind of caught up to her on the downhill part.”

Local talent Liz Brandon of nearby Eagle UT had been the early leader, hitting the mile mark in 5:45, with a pack that included Menlove and Kipp just behind.  By the time those three reached the base of Spectator Hill the first time, they were three across, with Kipp and Menlove marshalling strength for the battle ahead.

“I just let the race come to me,” Kipp said. “I tried not to go out too fast.”

Brandon would fade over the next loop, but still hung onto third in 18:54, crossing as the top Idaho finisher and establishing herself as a primary challenger for the Idaho 5A state title, along with Coeur d’Alene’s Kinsey Gomez and Borah’s Nicole Nielsen.  Gomez didn’t race on Saturday, but Nielsen, the defending Bob Firman champion, ended up a disappointing 20th after battling the main pack through the early-going.

Davis UT leader takes a temporary step back, team steps forward

Sometimes even accomplished athletes need to take a step back and re-examine the tools which earned them their accolades.  Several years ago, Tiger Woods, already riding a huge wave of success, famously rebuilt his golf swing in an effort to become even better.  Many questioned the wisdom of the move at the time, but nobody was second-guessing after he returned to reel off a series of unprecedented wins with the new stroke.

Davis UT senior Candace Eddy may not be quite as dominant as Woods, but she’s enjoyed more than her share of success on the national scene as a distance star.   Last spring she suffered a stress fracture late in the track season and spent the early summer allowing it to heal.  When she returned to running in anticipation of her senior cross country season, a new pain in her quadriceps muscle was linked to the biomechanics of her stride.  Predominantly a toe-striker when she runs, Eddy was informed that the best solution would be to revamp her running form for longer races, so she lands with more of a heel- or midfoot strike, instead of planting on her toes. Such modifications don’t come easily when you’ve been running for years, and are even harder to swallow when you lead a team with state championship and national level aspirations.  Yet Eddy has taken that temporary step back, under the close supervision of Coach Corbin Talley, and “rebuilt” her stride in the hopes of taking two steps forward.  The results, according to Talley, are promising thus far.

“We’re hoping [she’ll be ready] in two weeks, at Orem.  I ran with her this morning; we ran on the treadmill, and she went four miles hard.  But we’re okay with being patient.  Really with her, we’re looking to get her back by Nike Regionals.  So we have a shot there.”

If the progress of his senior leader is encouraging, so was the performance of his team minus their number one runner.   The Darts, runners-up a year ago against a Mountain Brook AL team that eventually finished sixth at the 2007 NTN (to Davis’ ninth), were after redemption this year, and came away with exactly that behind a strong team-focused performance.  With Katie Swanson  ninth in 19:22, and Meghan Hedquist a stride behind in 19:23, Davis rode a 1-4 split of 18 seconds to a 64 to 86 win over Mountain View UT.

“We got into a pretty good position,” Coach Talley said, “but we stayed patient on the first lap.  The second lap we moved real well.  Our top four moved really well on that second lap.  And then our fifth girl—we have a little gap after four right now, without Candace [Eddy] in there—but she really stepped up for us today.”

The Davis victory opened a floodgate for Utah teams, which seized the top four places and 6 of the top 10 positions.  NW#10 Mountain View ID was the top non-Utah team, finishing fifth with 148 points.

Davis’ improving pack gives them the luxury of patience with Eddy’s return, and sets them up as strong contender for a repeat Southwest NXN slot once the senior leader—and her new and improved stride—rejoins the team for good on the starting line.
