US#1 North Central adjusts to the 'new normal'

 A year ago, if you were reading this story on DyeStat.com, there’s a decent chance the runners on North Central WA boys’ cross country team were not. Last September, North Central coach Jon Knight, concerned that his inexperienced team had lost focus after entering the season ranked US#2 in the Harrier Magazine Super 25 and then suffering an upset to Crater OR at the Bob Firman Invitational, requested his runners "stay off" DyeStat and get back to the basics: training and taking care of the small details. That shift in focus paid off big time, with a repeat Washington 3A state title, a win at the NTN Northwest Regional and a sixth-place finish at Nike Team Nationals. In Saturday’s Boy’s Elite race at the 2008 Bob Firman Invite, Knight and his charges showed just how far they’ve come.
If the expectations were higher (North Central was preseason US#1 in the initial Harrier poll this season) the mood was lighter and more relaxed.
“All of our heads were spinning a bit at the start of last year,” Coach Knight conceded on Saturday. “The attention, the rankings…this year we’re more used to it.”
And if North Central has grown more comfortable with the spotlight, they’ve also held tight to their strong focus and team mentality.
“We wanted to stay confident coming in [to the Firman meet],” team leader and #1 runner Andrew Kimpel (left) noted. “Now this year we’ve sort of seen it all, and we’re used to it. But we came in here thinking we’re underdogs. We don’t want to think too high of ourselves. Just take care of business.”
That’s exactly what the Indians did on Saturday. Weathering a muddied course and the withering expectations that come with a #1 ranking, they efficiently dismantled the field with three runners in the top six (led by Kimpel’s 15:56 runner-up performance) and a score of 51 that was more than sixty points up on second place squad Timpview UT (115 pts).
If there is a revelation this year for North Central, it’s the performance of senior Jeff Howard. Howard, the hero of last year’s NTN regional when he recovered from an early fall to shore up the team win, has elevated his game to an entirely different level this fall.
“He put in a big summer,” Kimpel said. “Jeff’s been really good; he’s stepping up in the big meets. He’s a fighter.”
The one apparent chink in the North Central armor on Saturday may have been the 45-second gap from their fourth man (Ben Johnston, 16:29 - 14th) to their fifth man (Casey Adams, 17:14 - 38th), but Kimpel, for one, wasn’t concerned, chalking it up more to the current strength of the top four.
 “Our goal for the season is to get our fifth man closer to our four, but right now they’re doing really good. You could kind of say we have three fifth men, anybody can step it up and be there.”
With their daunting top three and a year’s worth of experience at the national level, that sort of interchangeability could spell trouble for the rest of the teams in the country.
Nelson nails the individual win, sending more hardware south to Utah
Jonathon Nelson, senior and top runner for US#19, SW#3 Timpview UT, didn’t know what to expect when he arrived for his first meet ever on the Eagle Island course. He knew it would run slow after a drenching downpour early in the morning rendered the one significant hill a slick mudbath and left puddles through the normally hardpacked dirt of the Fox Trail that winds along the far side of the lake.
“The mud threw a strange curve on things,” Nelson said, after emerging as the 2008 Firman Boys Elite champion. “I don’t like leading, so if somebody else is willing to do it, that’s cool.”
Rising Idaho talent Barak Watson, a senior competing in his first official cross country season for Columbia High while being homeschooled, was happy to assume that mantle. Watson led the field through a relatively conservative opening mile of 4:50 (above), with Nelson and North Central’s top three lurking nearby. As the group wound through the Fox Trail the second time, Watson was still leading, and a pack that included Nelson, Kimpel and Howard from North Central, and Elijah Rono from Wasatch Academy UT, had separated slightly from the rest of the field.

“I hurt more or less the whole time,” Nelson said. “It was pretty painful, but you just learn to deal with it because everybody else is dealing with the same thing you are.”
After crossing in 15:51.88, a wobbly Nelson tried to ascertain how his upset-minded team had fared behind him. Despite starting their scoring with a single digit of ‘1,’ Timpview was no match for North Central. They did manage a strong second in a field dominated by talented Utah squads, and Nelson noted that they simply appreciated the chance to race the country’s top-ranked team.
“We were really excited about it,” he said. “It’s always nice to race number one, for the experience.”
On Saturday, at least in the individual competition, the others could say the same about Nelson as well.
