Boise State football recruit stars in track in 1-year stint at Capital

Dutchman Geraldo Hiwat will soon be a member of the Boise State football team, but the Capital High senior demonstrated his enormous potential in track and field on the oval that surrounds the Broncos’ famed blue turf Friday at the YMCA Invitational.
 Hiwat, who acquired an academic visa last summer to attend the high school in Boise, won the 200 in a season-best 21.75 seconds. He also has clocked a hand-timed 10.70 (10.84 FAT) in the 100 and owns a season-best of 23 feet, 7 3/4 inches in the long jump, which ranks 28th in the U.S. He’ll compete in both events Saturday.
Hiwat arrived from the Netherlands with limited experience in football or track and field. After successfully earning a college scholarship to play wide receiver at Boise State, a perennial Top 25 program, he thought he’d give sprinting and jumping to round out his only year at an American high school.
“It’s an amazing experience to have an athlete like him,” Capital sprints coach Kathryn Dallas said. “It’s almost a one-in-a-lifetime experience for a coach to have someone like Geraldo walk through your program. He’s just so green and so new to the whole experience.” HIwat came to the US a year ago for a football camp. He attracted the attention of Boise State football coaches, who wanted him to have experience in US high school football. So he came to Capital High.
Hiwat’s season-best in the 100 ranks second in Idaho and his top 200 time leads the state.
“Watching him actually compete is amazing,” Dallas said. “Everything just seems so effortless. It’s just fun to be able to see an athlete do that. It’s hard because we only get him for his senior year.”
Dallas said Hiwat’s potential for faster times is enormous in the 200, because a lingering hip injury suffered during the football season makes him tentative on the corner.
On Friday, Hiwat pulled away in the final 100 meters after rounding the corner with a short lead. “The 200 is all about who has the most will,” Hiwat said. “That’s how I see it. I am getting a lot faster.”
Said Dallas: “Even when he runs a time like that, he’s telling me he’s not running the corner as hard as he can. I just think, ‘Wow, this is an amazing athlete.’ ”
His speed also is helping him in the long jump. Hiwat is aiming for Capital’s school record of 24-2 1/2 on Saturday, but he hopes to jump 25-0 or better before the high school season ends at the state meet next month.
“Because he didn’t know much about the long jump when we first started working with him, it was just one thing at a time,” Capital jumps coach Bryan Stith said. “Ninety-five percent of the long jump is the run-up, what happens before the foot leaves the ground, so we’ve really worked on that. … The hard part with it now is that he’s getting so much faster, it’s hard to bring that under control to keep him technically sound.”
It’s unclear whether Hiwat will be able to continue his promising track and field career at Boise State, but his athleticism should show up on the college gridiron.
“I don’t know if anybody has seen his full potential,” Dallas said. “I don’t know is BSU is going to let him run and jump, but it would be amazing if he’s given that chance and that experience. He could do some amazing things. I’m sure good things will come for him at BSU. It should be exciting.”
Other Friday highlights:
- Madison (Rexburg, Idaho) junior Chari Hawkins tied the meet record in the girls high jump with a clearance of 5-4. Hawkins is the reigning 5A state champion in the event.
- Borah (Boise) senior Nicole Nielsen, the two-time defending 5A state champion in the girls 1,600 and 3,200, won the 1,600 in 5:11.05.
- Elko, Nev. Junior Eric Sandall held off local favorite and reigning 5A boys 1,600 and 3,200 state champion Eric Fitzpatrick to claim the 1,600 in 4:21.98.
- Skyview (Nampa, Idaho) senior Nikki Rudder chalked up an Idaho-best 41-6 to win the girls shot put.
- Capital (Boise) senior Sam Nielson won the girls triple jump with an effort of 37-10 after posting a school record of 38-8 3/4 last week to climb to 29th on the U.S. outdoor list.
