BOYS

1. Albuquerque Academy, NM

The Red Army of Academy just keeps rolling along. The Chargers hung a 50 victory over St. Pius X on Friday afternoon on the Academy home course. Academy is also getting faster as the year is getting older. The top 5 runners improved on their times from the Albuquerque City Championships by an average of 17.6 seconds. The biggest improvement came from Dustin Martin who ran 31 seconds faster than he did two weeks ago. The Chargers average time of 16:25.6 ranked #3 all time on the course. This team average was a full 16 seconds faster than the performance by the 2006 Academy team that finished 10th at NTN that year. Academy has one more test before they can pack their bags for Portland. They must face their rivals, and friends, from the north; Los Alamos at the 4A State Championships in Rio Rancho.

2. Los Alamos, NM

The Hilltoppers cruised to an easy victory on their home course at the District 2-AAAA Championships. Only two runners from Espanola Valley were able to break up the gang of green jerseys that raced toward the finish at the Los Alamos Golf Course. The Hilltoppers were led by the brothers Pittman who claimed the top two spots. Los Alamos ran on the same course on back to back weeks. The top 5 on Saturday ran an average of 1 second faster than they did last week. With the exception of Gareth Gilna the results were very similar. Gilna was Los Alamos’ #1 when they won in Colorado at the Centerra Invitational. This weekend he was “under the weather” and his performance suffered. Co-Head Coaches Rob and Kathy Hippwood hope that he will be closer to 100% when the HIlltoppers take on SW#1 Albuquerque Academy at the 4A State Championships this Saturday.

4. Wheat Ridge, CO

The course was the story of the day at the Colorado State Championships. On Thursday Colorado Springs was blanketed by over 20 inches of snow. By Friday the snow had melted but it left the course sloppy and wet. By Saturday several large puddles remained and made the state championship a “mudders race.” The Boys from Wheat Ridge did not prove to be “Good Mudders.” Their season’s success has been based on a foundation of excellent pack times. On Saturday their pack was an ordinary 1:19. When they had dominated smaller meets their pack times had been under 35 seconds. Henry Cowhick led the way for Wheat Ridge. He finished 16th and was followed one second later by teammate Scott Fauble. The top 5 boys from Wheat Ridge are all underclassmen and will be back next year to improve on their 3rd place finish.

5. Grand Junction, CO

Richard Medina is a “mudder.” Or at least he was on Saturday. The Grand Junction senior won the 5A State Championship and helped lead his team to a runner-up finish in the team standings. Richard Medina probably would have won the individual title under any course conditions. He has been running fast at the right time and looks to run his best at the Footlocker Regional and Nationals. His younger brother Martin did not have an ideal race. Martin has been under the weather and had to settle for a finish out of the top 10. As a team Grand Junction finished 26 points behind 5A champ, Dakota Ridge. That gap may have been closer if two sport athlete Raffi Cote had a little more experience. The part time cross country runner-part time soccer player was racing in his third race of the year. Cote experienced side stitches throughout the race and could not race through the pain. He finished 70th. The team’s season is probably over. It is not likely that they will attend the Rocky Mountain Championship in Idaho. But the season is not over for the Medina brothers or Ryan Steele. All three runners will continue to train and get ready for the Footlocker Regional in Wisconsin.

6. Reno, NV

Running in their 3rd meet in 9 days, the boys from Reno proved that they are the best team in Nevada as they dominated the Northern Regional. Head Coach Roland Martin is excited about how his team performed through an important stretch of their season. Last week, before the Mt. SAC meet, the team was victorious in a conference meet. That victory kept Reno undefeated for the year in their conference. On Thursday at their regional meet, Reno was once again led by Walter Juarez. The senior took home the individual title running the 5k course in 16:30. He was 14 seconds faster than Chad Shroy of Carson. Reno will be looking for their 5th straight Nevada State title this weekend.

Dakota Ridge, CO

“Amazing! Unbelievable!” Those were the words of Dakota Ridge head coach Mike Callor when he was talking to a reporter for the Denver Post. The boys from Dakota Ridge emerged from the mud as the Colorado State Champions. Dakota Ridge has been flying under the radar for the past few weeks. They fell out of the rankings following their performance at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minnesota. At that race Kyle Simcox ran injured and finished as the team’s #6. On Saturday Simcox finished 13th and was the team’s #2. Once again Dakota Ridge was led by Evan Appel who finished 3rd in 16:05. That time was fast enough to defeat, two time defending state champion, Steven Weeks. Appel will be back next season as the top returning runner in Colorado. Dakota Ridge coach Mike Callor is currently unsure about his team’s future. As of Sunday afternoon he had not fully committed to take his team on the 9-11 hour bus ride to Pocatello, Idaho for the Rocky Mountain Championship. He will be calling a team meeting on Monday where the group will decide if they have one more meet, and bus ride, in them.

GIRLS

1. Fort Collins, CO

The Fort Collins girls have lost one race this season. Unfortunately they lost Colorado State Championship. Fort Collins was a distant 7th, finishing 157 points behind the 5A state champions from Cherry Creek. Lisa Reyna was the #1 runner for Fort Collins on Saturday. Throughout the season she was accompanied by Miranda Benzel and Alicia Holt. At last weeks regional meet the three runners finished within 8 seconds of each other. On Saturday that gap was 1:02 as Holt finished 73rd and Benzel finished 75th. Katelyn Keating was the #2 runner for Fort Collins finishing in 35th place. She has not been able to crack the top 5 on her team for the last 3 weeks. Fort Collins has been dominant all season. This breakdown could not have come at a worse time.

2. Sandra Day O’Connor, AZ

Some teams have a letdown following a big performance at a big meet. That didn’t happen with the Sandra Day O’Connor girls’ team. They won the Northwest Region Championship while competing in their 3rd race in 7 days. They also got a boost when Alein Eisenhauer returned to form. She finished 5th at the regional and was only 17 seconds behind O’Connor’s usual #2, Camille Olson. At the Mt. SAC race she finished over 50 seconds behind Olson and was the teams #4. Eisenhouer has been battling IT band problems and has not been able to race comfortably. That injury seems to be healing quickly as she is running with a smoother and faster this week. Lyndsay Prescott continued to be the #1 runner for O’Connor. She won the race in 17:45 and looks to take home an individual state championship at this Saturday’s State Championship. She will also be trying to run the fastest time of the day on the state meet course in Phoenix. Prescott ran the fastest time of the day at the Doug Conley Invitational in late September. That race featured the best teams in Arizona.

3. Eldorado, NM

Julie Brasher is back! And just in time. Over the last two years Julie has been the #1 girl for the Golden Eagles of Eldorado. Prior to the teams bye week Julie had a string of mediocre performances. Well they were mediocre for her. On September 30th she won the Curtis Williams Invitational. Since then she has not run as the Golden Eagles #1. Her lowest point came at the Albuquerque City Championship where she finished 8th and was Eldorado’s #4. Doubts about her were put to rest on Friday when Brasher returned to the top of the podium as she won the District 5-AAAAA individual championship. As for the team they kept on doing what they have done all season: dominate the New Mexico competition. Eldorado took the top 6 spots in the meet and all six girls crossed the finish line within a minute of each other. The Golden Eagles will be looking to cap off their undefeated season by winning the one race that eluded them last year; the New Mexico 5A State Championship.

6. Cherry Creek, CO

When the state championship race started not all the Cherry Creek girls loved mud. But when the race was over those same girls were some of the happiest girls in Colorado as they were now state champions and the mud didn’t matter. Lisa Johnstone led the way for Cherry Creek finishing 6th in 19:30. She was ecstatic with the team result but disappointed in her individual performance. Johnstone took the lead early in the race and attempted to pull away from the pack. The first part of that strategy was planned out with her coach Steve Lohman. In an attempt to be clear of the early pushing and shoving, Johnstone raced to the front of the pack. When she got there she felt good and attempted to run away from the lead pack. That move proved to be a mistake as Johnstone paid for the fast early pace and faded to 6th. The day could have been even better for Cherry Creek. Claire Gallegher fell early in the race and was able to rebound and finish 16th. Cherry Creek will not be attending the Rocky Mountain Championship on Saturday. They will continue to train this week and then wait by the phone on Sunday. They will be wondering if their performance on Saturday was good enough to earn a trip to Portland.

7. Reno, NV

The Reno Girls have caught the injury bug. They have three varsity runners who have stress fractures. Adrienne Van Antwerp, Joele Slater and Zoe Steedman have been the teams usual #3, #4 and #6 throughout the season. All three were absent when Reno won the Nevada Northern Regional. They were able to defeat South Tahoe, a team that was ranked in the Southwest region earlier this year. South Tahoe was without their usual #5 and did not have the depth to overtake a wounded Reno squad. The picture at the front of the pack was the same picture that has been taken at Nevada meets over the last three years. Marie Lawrence has made a habit of winning races and setting records since her sophomore year. “Mel” accomplished that double again at the Regional as she set a new course record running 18:08. She will not face a serious test until her rematch with Jordan Hasay at the Footlocker West Regional in December. Until then the residents of Nevada should flock to the state championships next week so they can catch the last, in state, cross country meet of one of the best runners the western region has ever seen.

8. Dakota Ridge, CO

The girls from Dakota ridge finished 3rd at the Colorado State Championships on Saturday. Frontrunners Alexa and Natosha Rogers did their best to help the team finish higher. The pair finished 5th and 8th respectively covering the muddy course in 19:26 and 19:33. At their region meet a week earlier, Paige Lillo was only 6 seconds behind Natosha Rogers. At the state meet, Lilio finished 48 seconds behind her teamate. That coupled with a disappointing performance by Jen Wertz led to the 3rd place finish. The times at the 5A Region 2 meet were very similar to the times at the state meet in Colorado Springs. Lillo and Wertz finished over 40 seconds slower at state while the rest of the scorers on the team ran within 16 seconds of their performances at Regional.
