Southwest NTN Review

week 7

week ending October 22, 2006

by Salomon Gonzales, NTN Southwest region editor

Boys - Girls

BOYS

1. Albuquerque Academy, NM

The Academy boys continued their dominance of the Southwest region at the Los Alamos Invitational. The Chargers are now a perfect 18-0 against teams who are or have been ranked in the top 10 of the NTN Southwest rankings. At the Los Alamos Invitational the Academy took the race to the field. Ben Johnson and Dustin Martin led from the gun and never gave up the first two spots. For the first 2 miles of the race Academy held the top 3 positions as Pat Zacharias raced hard to hold off the first wave of Los Alamos runners. Zacharias was later caught by Allen Pittman but he was able to hold off the remaining Hilltoppers. Academy and Los Alamos will have another rematch in two weeks at the New Mexico State Championships in Rio Rancho. And once again Academy will have both of their titles on the line. Academy Head Coach Adam Kedge spoke highly of the Hilltoppers, “Los Alamos serves as a great late season test for us every year. To be able to compete with a team the caliber of the Hilltoppers so close to the state meet keeps our kids focused on the task at hand. They are clearly a formidable opponent that will test us at the state meet. They are as good as any team we've seen this year.”

2. Campbell County, Gillette, WY

The boys from Gillette suffered an upset on Monday when they finished 2nd at the Wyoming State Championship.  Lead man Paul Burke did his best to avoid the upset. He won the individual title defeating Laramie’s Brian Pierre by 3 seconds.  Pierre had beat Burke earlier in the year, on the same course, at the Cheyenne Invitational.  That is the week that Campbell County regained their #2 spot in the Southwest rankings because Cheyenne Central finished 4th at the Centerra meet. Since that meet all the Camels have done is win.  But on Monday they came up 23 points short.

3. Los Alamos, NM

It’s a tale of two packs for the Los Alamos boy’s team. At their home invitational both packs raced hard from off of the pace. During the first mile, LA’s front pack was well behind the top 3 boys from Academy. Their green jerseys were sprinkled in a group of runners who seemed to be fading from the three red jerseys from Academy. From mile 1 to mile 2, LA’s front pack moved up and took control of the chase pack. By the stretch run the top 7 positions all belonged to Academy and Los Alamos. Gareth Gilna, who was LA’s #1 at Centerra, fell off of the pace and finished 10th. The Hilltoppers 2nd pack finished 24 seconds behind Academy’s #6. Los Alamos was not able to upset the #1 team in the Southwest but the 17 point margin of defeat is the closest any team has come to the Chargers this year.

4. Wheat Ridge, CO

The Wheat Ride boys cruised to victory at their regional. Scott Fauble led the way, winning the meet in 17:44. Three other Wheat Ride runners crossed the finish line within 20 seconds of Fauble. Fauble has been the teams #5 and #2 for the last two races. He has shown marked improvement. Bryan Heiny has been Wheat Ridge’s solid #4 for the last two races. His name did not appear in the top 10 so he may have not run. Since their victory at Columbine, Wheat Ridge has not lost. They go into state as the HOT team in 5A.

5. Grand Junction, CO

The Grand Junction boys ran away with the Region 1 championship on Friday. Richard Medina cruised to the front of the pack and won the individual title. The original plan was for Richard to help his brother Martin, but the younger Medina did not need the help. Richard Medina will shoot for the individual state title on Saturday while Martin will be planning on a top 10 finish. Soccer player Raffi Cote ran in just his 2nd race of the season. His inexperience showed as early on in the race he was as high as 4th. As the race unfolded he paid for his early aggression and faded to 14th. At state Cotti will run with Ryan Steele early on and then “feel out” the race. He should be able to improve on Friday’s performance. The Boys from Grand Junction feel that they have as good a shot as anyone of winning the 5A title this weekend.

6. Dakota Ridge, CO

Dakota Ridge squeaked by Cherry Creek at the Region 2 meet. Cherry Creek was back at full strength and gave Dakota Ridge all they could handle. Evan Appel led the way for Dakota Ridge with a 2nd place finish. Sean McNeil, the usual #2, finished 7th and was 11 seconds behind his teammate Kyle Simcox who finished 6th. The Colorado State Championships are up next. There is no clear favorite in the 5A division and Dakota Ridge is one of 5 teams that has a chance of running away with the team title.

7. Davis, UT

Spencer Anderson returned to the course just in time to help Davis win the 5A state championship on Wednesday. He was able to muster a 28th place finish as Davis won by 10 points over Mountain View. The results of the combined team scores showed that there is little difference between the 3 top teams in Utah. 4A champion Tipview won a tiebreaker with Davis to claim the unofficial combined title, while Mountain Crest finished just 2 points behind. For Davis the last part of the season has rested on the health of Anderson. If he continues to improve he could return to his midseason form by the Rocky Mountain Championships. Davis could be a much stronger team by that race.

Rio Rico’s weekend started well and finished with a disappointment. On Wednesday they easily won their home meet as their top runners cruised to a perfect score. On Saturday they finished a disappointing 13th in the Boys Super Sweepstakes race of the Mt. SAC Invitational. In the combined results Rio Rico finished 23rd out of 461 complete teams. They were 13 spots behind SW#10 Reno, NV who finished 9th overall. Mark Moleera has been the teams #1 all season. At Mt. SAC he was their #2 and finished 51st. Chris Frazier was the teams #4 at the Doug Conley Invitational. He was their #1 on Saturday.

Timpview, UT

The Timpview boys pulled off a mild upset when they defeated Mountain Crest for the 4A state title. Their 33 second pack time seemed to be the difference. After all of the results were combined and 5 runners were scored Timview was even with 5A state champion Davis. But Timview’s #6, Kevin Kemp, was the better #6 and Timpview has the unofficial title of best team in Utah.

This week he ran as their #4 and was 47 seconds behind Kalm. In winning the meet Kalm finished ahead of West Las Vegas’ Tony Sanchez who won the Rio Rancho Invitational a week earlier.

Cheyenne Central, WY

The boys from Cheyenne Central put it all together on Monday to win the Woming 4A state championship.  The Indians were led by Sean Wilder who finished 3rd in 16:40. The last time Cheyenne Central was at full strength and completely healthy they won the Sweeheart Invitational in Loveland, CO. At that time Wilder was their #3 and finishing about 15 second behind Scooter Foley. On Monday he came through with a championship performance. But the rest of the Indians ran like champions as well.  The questions about Laine Parrish’s health may have been put to rest. On Monday he was 29 seconds behind Wilder to run as the Indian’s #5. He was 23 seconds behind the #1 man at Loveland. Cheyenne Central dropped out of the rankings after their disappointing performance at Centerra, CO. At that race Head Coach Rick Bishop was absent as he was running the St. George Marathon. At Centerra Devin Rathburn and Laine Parris ran poorly and Cheyenne Central finished 4th.  But the Indians put it all together at state.

In an article posted in the Coloradoan Head Coach Chris Suppes said of his girls, "It's the best girls team I've ever coached by far. They're deep, they're talented, they're dedicated, they work hard and they win." They are also close. The top 5 girls finished within 19 seconds of each other. So was the performance of Rosie Brennan and Lia Margolis who finished in front of Lindsay Baker of Judge Memorial who had defeated them a week earlier. The Girls from Park City will put aside some of their usual winter commitments and continue training. They plan on running at the Rocky Mountain Championship in early November.
