NTN Southwest Review 10/07

week ending 10/07

by Salomon Gonzales, Southwest NTN region editor

Boys - Girls

BOYS

1. Albuquerque Academy, NM

The Chargers traveled to Bullhead Park to compete in the Highland High School Invitational. Currently the challenge for Academy is remaining focused through the remainder of the regular season. Head Coach Adam Kedge states “The tough stretch of 3 or 4 hard meets in a row early on in the year is very difficult on a top ranked team. Seeing ranked teams and deep fields is what we like but not easy. You have to be on every weekend. In the end, I guess we want to earn all that comes to us. One hard thing about this last month was finding a way to keep kids motivated for both meets and practice.” Prior to their off week the Chargers completed a tough three week stretch that included UNM, Liberty Bell and their Home Meet. This week they performed well coming off of their off week as they continued to remain unbeaten in 2006. Academy was able to dominate the 16 team field while using their 6th different lineup of the season. Ten different runners have raced for the Chargers in varsity competition this year. Kedge is using competition to keep his team sharp. It seems to be working well for his younger runners. At the top of the lineup Ben Johnson and Dustin Martin continue to be consistent. The duo dominated the field and finished 1-2.

2. Cheyenne Central, WY

Last week a victory over instate rival Campbell County propelled Cheyenne Central to the 2nd position in the Southwest rankings. This week they finished a disappointing 4th at the Centerra Cross Country Classic. Cheyenne Central had disappointing performances from Deven Rathburn and Laine Parrish. Parrish has been diagnosed with an illness and may be out for the season. Cheyenne Central was defeated by currently unranked Los Alamos, Grand Junction and Dakota Ridge. Los Alamos and Dakota Ridge were previously ranked. Cheyenne Central’s top 6 were the same runners that ran well a week earlier at the Sweetheart invitational in Loveland. They were not able to duplicate their 23 second pack time of a week ago. This week’s pack time was 1:26.

3. Campbell County, Gillette, WY

The tread on the tires of the Campbell County Activities Bus has been wearing thin.  The team from Gillette has been on the road all season taking on all challengers and racking up the “frequent rider miles.” This weekend the Camels decided on a shorter trip and traveled to Cheyenne.  Head Coach Ron Kline talked about the going to Cheyenne instead of Centerra, “Part of me would really love to get down there, but my gut says Cheyenne is the right move for where we are in the season. I sometimes feel that going to a big deal meet too close to state has the effect of diminishing the importance and stature of the state meet. If the meet was earlier in the season, I would really jump on it.”  Campbell county won by placing 6 runners in the top 20. They were paced by Paul Burke and Taylor Kelting who placed 2nd and 3rd respectively.

4. Cherry Creek, CO

Cherry Creek received a regional ranking following their victory at the Runners Roost Invitational. At that meet they easily defeated Air Academy, Fort Collins and Grand Junction. After an idle week Cherry Creek finished a disappointing 7th at the Centerra Cross Country Classic. Cherry Creek was paced by Walter Schafer who finished 11th. Cherry Creek was running shorthanded but the details to that extent are not known.

7. Rio Rico, AZ

Following their 58 point victory at the highly competitive Doug Conley Invitational, Rio Rico must “train through” this section of their season. Over the next couple of weeks coach Roger Bristow will be splitting his squad. This split began with the Douglas meet. Rio Rico easily defeated the three other teams at the mid-week meet while only running runners 1, 3, 5, and 7 off of their varsity squad. Next Wednesday Rio Rico will run the other half of their squad, and Mike Reyes, at Tucson Catalina. Rio Rico will not face a serious challenge until October 20-21 when they travel to Mt. SAC. Bristow has requested that his boys be placed in the Division 1 Sweepstakes race but he does not know how that will pan out.

They defeated Air Academy 48-60.  Two weeks ago Air Academy beat the Lampkins on their home course in the Runner’s Roost Invitational. Fort Collins was lead by Bryant Mason who won the invite in 17:10.

9. Reno, NV

The Reno Boys finished a distant 6th in the Championship race at Clovis. Reno was defeated by 4 NTN ranked schools: Royal CA#1, Jesuit CA#4, Madera CA#10 and Arcadia CA#6. They were also defeated by unranked Chino Hills. They were 1:09 behind Chino in total time. Reno was able to defeat Davis CA#5 who finished 7th at Stanford last week. Reno’s combined time of 1:21:09 would have been good enough to win all of the smaller divisions at Clovis.

Los Alamos, NM

The Hilltoppers lost their regional ranking after their disappointing 13th place finish at UNM in early September. In looking at last year’s graduating class some people believed that Los Alamos was in a rebuilding mode. But a month of healing and experience has made a world of difference. Last week Los Alamos completely dominated a regional field at the Santa Fe Indian School invitational. They had a 27 second spread between their #1 and #4 runners and an overall pack time of 1:06. This weekend at Centerra they cut the 1-4 time down to 15 seconds and their pack time fell to 50 seconds. Co-Head Coaches Rob and Kathy Hipwood state that the improvement has come from the maturing of the 5-7 runners, ‘the Toms’ Witherall and Bowidowicz and Steve Walter ran within 6 seconds of each other and crossed the finish line within 60 seconds of LA’s #1 Gareth Gilna.

Grand Junction, CO

Paced by the front running duo of Richard and Martin Medina Grand Junction was able to finish 2nd at the Centerra Cross Country Classic. In finishing 2nd Grand Junction defeated 5 teams that are or have been ranked in the Southwest region this year. The team posted a pack time of 2:25. Their 6th man, Tyler Coleman, crossed the finish line 1:26 after their 5th man Chris McGinnis. Grand Junction’s depth is an issue but their strength at the top is not. Richard Medina was able to fend off Joseph Manilafasha of Denver North, who has dominated the state individually this year.

2. Eldorado, NM

The Golden Eagles of Eldorado continued to be the dominant force in New Mexico girl’s cross country this year. Eldorado defeated defending 5A state champion Gallup by 40 points. The girls again showed that depth is their strength as Allison Bedonie was the 3rd different girl, in the 3rd consecutive week, to win an invitational. Allison stepped up when teammate Julie Brasher lost her shoe with ≤ of a mile left in the race. Brasher kept her cool, and her other shoe, and finished 4th. Eldorado will be running against the clock, and history, as they travel to Albuquerque Academy next weekend to compete in the Albuquerque City Championships. Academy boys coach, and chief historian, Adam Kedge has kept excellent records for the deceptively difficult course. Eldorado will be running against the best teams in Albuquerque and the times of some of the best runners ever in the state. The Academy cross country course may be the toughest competition the Golden Eagles face in New Mexico this year.

The Park City Girls easily won the Soldier Hollow Invitational on Wednesday. The girls competed with 3 of their top 7 and placed all of their top 5 in the top 10. Park City will next compete in the Region 10 meet at Cottonwood complex. They will probably not face a major challenge through the remainder of the Utah season. The other strong girl’s teams in the state do not race in the same division. Park City is a 3A school while Davis, Spanish Fork and Tipanogos are in 5A. Utah does officially post their combined scores.

The Campbell County girls dominated the meet held on the site of the Wyoming state championships.  They defeated Cheyenne east by 55 points. The Camels were lead by Trisha Anderson who won the race in 19:28.  Campbell County was able to overcome an off day by Megan Gebhart who “gutted out” the race and finished a respectable 9th. Head coach Ron Kline talked about the conditions of the championship course stating, “The Cheyenne course is a rolling golf course with a fairly substantial climb for the first 400m. The kids run primarily on both short and fairly long "rough" grass for two laps around the outside of the 9 hole course which sits at an altitude of 6062 ft. ” Campbell County heads to Riverton for their regional meet. Nicole Lajeunesse bounced back from a disappointing Stanford to help Reno finish 3rd at the Clovis. While most of the attention in the Championship Race was paid to race winner Marie Lawrence it was Lajeunesse who set the tone for Reno. Last week she finished as Reno’s #5 and this week she was back at her normal #2 position. In finishing 3rd Reno was able to defeat CA#5 Buchanan and finish close to CA#7 Davis. CA#8 Crescent Valley was the fastest team in Clovis this weekend. Marie Lawrence always make the pack time look bad for the Reno team but the girls did pack in from 2-5 in 18 seconds.

This week the pair was the #6 and #7 runners for Tipanagos. Spanish Fork was able to run their top 5 runners in front of Tipanogos #4 Amber Hart.
