Boys Reports ---- Girls Reports

BOYS

SW#1/US#1 Albuquerque Academy, New Mexico

4A District Championship
11/3/07

Academy 28 St. Pius X 65 Grants 86 Belen 88 Del Norte 107 Volcano Vista 191 Valencia 198 Moriarty 212

The Academy Chargers were able to secure a trip to state while resting 3 of their usual top 7. Kyle Cooper, Anthony Lauriello, and Ryan Clark all finished in the top 5 for the Red Army at Los Alamos but they were held out so that the bottom half of the line-up could be ironed out. With that now set the Chargers must now focus on defending their state title and defeating an improving Los Alamos squad. That task is getting tougher to accomplish each week.

1. Ben Johnson 15:39
3. Pat Zacharias 16:08
7. Damon Cambell 16:42
8. Taylor Murray 16:45
9. Neil Longenbaugh 16:54

SW#3/ US#8 Los Alamos, New Mexico

District 2 4A Championship
11/3/07
Espanola, NM

Los Alamos 15 Espanola 72 Bernalillo 82 Taos 113

It is hard to draw conclusions from a “super” perfect score. Did the Los Alamos team run in a pack for part of the race? Did Kyle have a bad race or did he try something new? What we do know is that this is not the same team that put up over 100 points at the UNM Invitational and that next week’s battle between Los Alamos and Albuquerque Academy will be close.

4A Division II Arizona State Championships
Phoenix, Arizona
11/3/07

Mingus 36 Rio Rico 67 Catalina Magnet 104 Queen Creek 132 Flagstaff 131 (16 Teams Total)

The boys from Mingus Union High backed up their ranking with an impressive performance at the state meet. They not only won their division but they walked away with the best overall average time and the unofficial merged scores title. Their 43 second pack time is impressive and they will be a force at the SW Regional.

SW Bubble Team, Rio Rico, finished a distant second in the 4A DII race and were a disappointing 6th in the merged results. Rio Rico’s top 4 were strong but the gap from their #4 to their #5 was such that it cost them valuable points in the combined results.

11/3/07

Galena 39 Carson 82 Reno 102 Silverado 109 Centennial 112 (8 Teams Total)

The boys from Galena proved that they are the toast of Nevada with their impressive victory on Saturday. Galena was paced by Bryan Tibaduiza whose 16:22 was a course record. The team’s 2:01 pack time leaves people to wonder if they can contend against the large and deep field at the SW Regional.

SW#9 Cibola, New Mexico

++SW Bubble: Gallup, NM

District 1-5A Championship
Cibola High School
11/3/07

Cibola 32 Gallup 42 Rio Rancho 51 West Mesa 102

Cibola has now proven that they are the team to beat in 5A. This last weekend they defended their home turf by defeating both Gallup and Rio Rancho without Chris Montoya. Chris was pulled off of the course at about the 1 mile mark. Coach Ken Henry stated that Chris was sick and he pulled him because the team was running well. The three teams that qualified out of District 1 are probably 3 of the top 4 teams in 5A (Sandia being the other). But it is possible that all 3 trophy winners will come out of this group.

5A Division I Arizona State Championships
Phoenix, Arizona
11/3/07

Alhambra 64 Desert Vista 122 Mountain View-Mesa 167 Mesquite 171 Salpointe Catholic 183 (26 Teams Total)

Alhambra not only took home the gold at in the 5ADI division they also clocked the second fastest time of the day to Mingus. In the Combined results they finished second as well (155-181) showing that they are going to be a force at the SW Regional. Alhambra lacks a solid front runner but their pack time of 24 seconds more than makes up for it.

5ADII runner up, Desert Vista, finished a distant third in the combined results (DV scored 316).

SW#2/US#6 Eldorado, New Mexico

District 5 5A Championship

Eldorado 17 Highland 64 Manzano 80 Los Lunas 104 Rio Grande 112

Another dominating performance by Eldorado has the Eagles poised to repeat in 5A. Allison Bedonie may have singled herself out as the girl who will chase Gallup’s Jordan Brown to give the Eagles the top 2 spots at state. The team’s gap from 2-5 was 1:03. Comparing the team’s 1-2 gap makes me think that Rachel Velarde was running at an easy pace on Saturday.

1. Rachel Velarde 19:32
2. Allison Bedonie 19:38

5A Division I Arizona State Championships
Phoenix, Arizona
11/3/07

Xavier Prep 69 Mountain Ridge 89 Mesa Mountain View 94 Mountain Pointe 141 Desert Vista 194 (22 Teams Total)

The girls from Xavier Prep showed that they are the best team in the Grand Canyon state by posting an impressive 20 point victory over Mountain Ridge and winning the combined scores results as well. Xavier accomplished this upset of sorts by placing all of their scoring runners inside of Mountain Ridge's #4 and before Mountain View-Mesa’s #4.

Mountain Ridge was paced by the dynamic duo of Nadya and Nastia Bishton, who ran 33 seconds faster than the next fastest runner, Xavier’s Jessica Tonn. Their times allowed Mountain Ridge to post a faster overall time but the placing of the remaining runners resulted in the 20 point loss.

Mesa-Mountain View finished a close 3rd in the 5ADI division and in the merged results.
