UNM Lobo Invitational
9/8/07
UNM North Golf Course, Albuquerque, NM

Albuquerque Academy 50 Los Alamos 119 Cibola 147 Gallup 147 Rio Rancho 183

It doesn’t get any better than #1 vs #2. This will not go down as one of the epic Academy vs. Los Alamos battles but it did reveal much about both teams and the early state of New Mexico Cross Country. Academy’s top 6 runners all finished in the top 25 and showed why they were ranked #1 in the Southwest and #3 in the US. Once again the Chargers were led by Ben Johnson who won in 15:22. The course was altered this year and measured 5K. In the previous years the course was measured less than 3 miles. Los Alamos has a dangerous 1-2-3 combination that will continue to improve. Allen Pittman, Gareth Gilna and Kyle Pitman finished 2nd, 5th and 6th respectively but the next two Hilltoppers did not fare nearly as well. The team’s #4 finished 46th and their 5th was 67th. Los Alamos needed to have a solid pack that would finish ahead of Academy’s #5 but they are yet to pull off that feat. At UNM Los Alamos’ spread was 1:37, while the Charges spread was 1:20 from 1-6. SW#10 team Gallup was beaten by Cibola for third place. The two teams were tied after 5 men but Cibola’s #6 was faster. The Gallup Bengals once again posted an impressive pack time (23 seconds.) The Bengals are known for improving during the season and peaking at state.

Runners Roost Panther Invitational
8/30/07
Harrison High School, Colorado Springs

Division 1: Wheat Ridge 56 Regis 91 Dakota Ridge 93 Cherry Creek 102 Battle Mountain 118

Bryan Heiny must be feeling better. His performance answered any questions about his health and his teammate’s performance answered any questions about the strength of Wheat Ridge. Scott Fauble looks like he has stepped into the leadership position on the team but with a pack time under 0:30 all the Farmers look like frontrunners. The Farmers easily distance themselves from the rest of the pack which included Regis, Dakota Ridge and Cherry Creek. There is not much separating those three Teams. Bobby and Danny Nicolls led the way for Regis by placing 4th and 9th place respectively. Regis’ top 5 is solid but their lack of depth is obvious. Dakota Ridge looked very similar to Regis. The Eagles do not have much depth but they are solid through 5. They should get better as the season gets older if Austin Appel continues to improve. Cherry Creek, led by Charles White’s 2nd place showing, are very solid. They are also look deeper than Regis and Dakota Ridge as their #6 was only a second behind their #5. Wheat Ridge looks like the class of Colorado but once again there is a gang of teams ready to pounce if there is a slip.

8. Mountain Crest UT

BYU Autumn Classic
9/7/07
East Bay Golf Course, Provo UT

Timpview 111 Orem 140 Mountain Crest 149 Mountain View 175 Davis 184

Two big meet in Utah; two big wins for Timpview (See Grass Relays below). The BYU Autumn Classic proved to be just that, ‘Classic’ for Boys Cross Country in Utah. Timpview came out on top but the top teams are not separated by much. Take into consideration the fact that in one quick minute places 13 through 68 crossed the finish line. In this race a pack gap of over 1:30 could lead to big scores. This made for a perfect situation for Timpview, whose 55 second gap led to a meet low 111 points. Orem’s 62 second gap time proved to be the difference for their 2nd place performance. They were able to pack their top 6 inside of Mountain Crest’s top 5. As for Crest it was their 5th man that led to their 3rd place finish. 1-4 Mountain Crest had the best team in Provo but their #5 was 1:06 behind their #4. Depth will be key in Utah this season and Timpview has is plenty deep. Not only did they pack all of their seven runners in the top 60 but they took the top two positions in the JV race as well. Mountain View and Davis cannot be counted out either. Both teams ran solid spreads and have decent depth. Mountain View is really tough through 3 and then they have 4 runners who were within 10 seconds of each other. Davis has a solid 1-2 punch and then their next three are less than 5 seconds apart. Both of these teams will be battling it out for the 5A title later this year while Timpview, Orem and Mountain Crest are all in 4A.

7. Desert Vista AZ

Chandler Invitational
9/8/07
Chandler, AZ

Desert Vista 15 Highland 22 Shadow Mountain 31 Tuba City 47 Canyon del Oro 60

At the Chandler Invitational each team is scored by their top runner in each grade. 4 not 15 would be perfect in this scoring scenario. Desert Vista was not perfect but they were impressive. Their top 5 had a gap time of 45 seconds. The Thunder was able to defeat Highland (AZ#8), Shadow Mountain (AZ#10) and 23 other complete teams. Leading the way for the Thunder was 9:29 3200 runner, Matt Boughton who won the senior race in 15:35. In that race hew was trailed closely by Lance Williams of Tuba City (15:42) and Nathan Metsa of Tuscon (15:44.) In the latest poll the Arizona coaches disagreed with Dyestat.com’s rankings and ranked Mingus ahead of Desert Vista. If the Marauders of Mingus are actually faster than Desert Vista then there are at least two tough teams from Arizona this season because Desert Vista is the Real Deal.

Cherry Creek High School

1. Wheat Ridge 70 2. Rampart 119 3. Arapahoe 135 4. Cherry Creek 146 5. Dakota Ridge 173…9. Cheyenne Central 300

Wheat Ridge took home its second gold trophy this season at the Cherry Creek Invitational. They were 49 points better than 2nd place Rampart. The Colorado Boys 5A division looks especially deep this season. Cherry Creek and Dakota Ridge have been seen as early season top teams and they have suffered loses from Rampart, Arapahoe and Regis. The only constant this season seems to be the pack of Wheat Ridge and speedy legs of Evan Appel. In his second big race of the year Appel collected his second blue medal. Once again he was able to defeat top miler Charles White. This time he did it while running from off of the pace early on. SW#5 Cheyenne Central finished 9th in their 3rd race of the season. Their top 3 is now back and intact but their early season ranking is in jeopardy and was probably due more to the Cinderella season from a year ago.

Timpview led off the season with a dominant performance at the Grass Relays. Timpview’s times once again show that they are a solid team that can run in a tight pack. Nathan Fletcher led the way for the Thunderbirds and Jonathon Nelson proved that he is a rising star.

2. Los Alamos

Alamosa High Altitude Challenge
9/1/07
Alamosa, Colorado

Los Alamos kicked off their season with a dominant performance north of the New Mexico Border in the San Luis Valley. The Hilltoppers were without Tom Witherell but it didn’t factor in to the team’s performance. Los Alamos was still able to run with 1-5 spread of 0:56 and a 1-7 spread of 1:03. The Hilltoppers look stronger than the year before as sophomore Kyle Pittman has improved and now gives the team a dangers 1-2-3 combination. Prior to the race he stated that he was “hoped” to run with his brother Allen and Gareth Gilna but he was not sure that he could. Last year the team started slow due to illness, injury and inexperience. But this year will be different. Gareth Gilna stated that, “the team has a bigger base and we are ready for UNM.” The LA Boys are a force.

Casper Invitational
8/24/07
Casper, Wyoming

Campbell County 51 Laramie 64 Cheyenne Central 82 Cody 110 Sheridan 111

The Campbell County Camels look like they may have returned to the top of the Wyoming boys division. That title is unofficial for now as many in the state believe that Cheyenne East has the toughest team in the Equality State. At Casper the Camels pulled of a solid if unspectacular victory over many of their instate rivals. Campbell County’s 5 man gap of 1:16 shows that they will be vulnerable in larger races but they may have enough to defeat their foes in Wyoming. SW#5 Cheyenne Central will need some immediate improvement if they want to compete with Campbell County and Cheyenne East. The Indians finished a disappointing third while one of their top guns (Devin Rathburn) is still on the shelf. Central was and will be led by the dangerous duo of Laine Parrish and Josh Franke. Adding Rathburn to the mix will make the Indians stronger.

Eldorado 38 La Cueva 130 Cheyenne Mountain 172 Albuquerque Academy 178 St. Michael’s 191 Sandia 205 Rio Rancho 210 Los Alamos 217 Gallup 228

The Eldorado Eagles completely dominated the competition at the UNM North Golf Course. Eldorado was the only team to score less than 100 points, they won by almost 100 points and their #7 beat every other school’s #5. Rachel Velarde led the way when she scorched the field with a 18:21. Her improvement over the summer has been astonishing. The rest of the UNM story is a bit confusing. Unranked LaCueva surprised may by finishing 2nd. The Bears ran well in the spring and have carried it over to the trails. Laura Lavezo’s 3rd place finish proves that she is now a New Mexico Elite. LaCueva’s pack time was 2 minutes none of the other 5A schools running respectable spreads. LaCueva has emerged as the early favorite in 5A as the next school was 75 points behind them. Cheyenne Mountain was also unranked in the preseason poll. That fact did not stop the girls from putting together a respectable performance. Their third place finish proved the depth of Colorado. Cheyenne Mountain was 2nd in the Division II race at Harrison High School. At that race 10 schools ran faster than the Indians. Albuquerque Academy finished 4th with an eye brow raising line-up. Their varsity was without Julia Foster and Paige Throckmorton. Throckmorton did not run at all and Julia Foster entered and won the C-Team Race. The Charges who did race varsity were led by Clara Milne who finished a surprising 5th. Albuquerque Academy is potentially much better than they showed at the North Course. The St. Michael’s Lady Horsemen seem to be the top team in NM3A but their lack of depth raises flags with their SW ranking. Their top 4 can run with most teams but they have a 1:30 gap between #4 and #5. It is an odd site in New Mexico to see both the Los Alamos and Gallup Girls finish outside of the top 5. Prior to the current Eldorado dominance these two squads controlled the 4A and 5A divisions in New Mexico. Look for both of these teams to improve.

Division 1: Fort Collins 38 Dakota Ridge 87 Thompson Valley 100 Palmer 170 Rocky Mountain 184 Cherry Creek 184

I guess it is only an upset if you believe rankings. Fort Collins has been the dominant team in the southwest region for over a year, except for one day last October. The Lambkins went out and proved that their state performance was an aberration. Of course Dakota Ridge was without superstar Katie Vanetta but if she had been in the race and finished 1st the score would have been 43-58. Fort Collins still wins but they are not completely dominant. These two teams are very close and the battle for Colorado’s top spot will be interesting. Cherry Creek (SW#9) and Classical Academy (SW Bubble) both had disappointing days but don’t count them out just yet. Classical Academy was without their #1 runner and Cherry Creek improved every week of the season last year. Thompson Valley was impressive finishing 3rd. The Eagles top 5 finished in the top 35. The top 5 spread may not place them with the top teams in the Southwest but they will be a force in the 4A division in Colorado.

The early season results from Utah have shown that the best team in the Beehive State is Davis. No one can doubt that after their dominance of the BYU Autumn Classic. They placed all 7 of their runners in the top 50. 2nd place Spanish Fork and 3rd Place Timpanogos couldn’t place their top 5 in the top 50. No one in Utah has a 1-2 punch like Davis. Candace Eddy and Natalie Haws are a lock to finish in the top 5 in most every race this season. Their pack gap of 1:36 may leave room for improvement but it is comparable to most of the top teams in the Southwest who have top frontrunners. Davis adds another team to the Southwest mix that has already proven to be deeper than anticipated. After Davis there wasn’t much room between 2nd place Spanish Fork and 5th place Orem. The early season surprises in Utah have been the performance of Park City and Jordan. Both teams entered the season with Southwest rankings but their time on the poll is probably coming to an end. Both squads have turned in lackluster results early this season (See Grass Relays Below). Park City is still without Lia Margolis but 1 girls will not make up 200 points.

Absent runners led to many questions at American Fork Utah. But there is no questioning the strength of the Davis and Timpanogos girls. After more than an hour of competition the two squad were separated by less than 40 seconds. These two teams have set the bar high in Utah. SW#4 Park City was without their top runner (Lia Margolis) and fell to 7th place. Margolis would probably made up about 2 minutes on the team time but that would have still put Park City out of the top 3. SW#5 Jordan was missing two runners (Lexy Davis and Natalie Espino) and placed 10th. SW Bubble team Rock Springs was over 8 minutes behind Davis.

Mountain View-Mesa 66 Cactus Shadows 108 Saguaro 112 Xavier Prep 121 Salpointe 122 O’Connor 134

This meet was run in an interesting format where each team ran 4 runners in two separate races. The results were then combined and then scored in a traditional fashion. Those results are above. They also scored the meet using combined time. In both cases Mountain View-Mesa came out victorious. Their top 5 runners ran within 1:20 and their top 8 had a gap time of 3:32. SW#3 Sandra Day O’Connor finished 6th. They were without Jade Riley who should be their #2 this season. Their #1, Lindsay Prescott finished second to Xavier’s Jessica Tonn. Thus far no Arizona team has distinguished itself in the girls division. Mountain Ridge performed well in Flaggstaff but they have a big gap following the Bishton’s. Many believe that Xavier Prep is a top team but they finished 4th at this meet. As in most years the picture will clear up at the Doug Conley meet.

Fort Collins 44 Thompson Valley 100 Dakota Ridge 120 Chaparral 181 Fairview 196 Cherry Creek 219

The Fort Collins Lambkins are on a mission. Many thought that their early season win was based on emotion and they held their breath waiting for Fort Collins to falter. But they came through again with a convincing victory. Dakota Ridge was ranked #1 in both the pre-season and week #1 polls in Colorado but it now looks like Fort Collins deserves the top spot. Next up for Fort Collins and Dakota Ridge is a loaded field at the Liberty Bell. Look for Fort Collins to continue their domination.

Led by Nadya and Nastia Bishton, Mountain Ridge High School won the Peaks Invitational. Mountain Ridge moved up in altitude to defeat 3 teams that were ranked ahead of them in the Arizona Pre-Season Coaches Poll. Since then Mountain Ridge has moved to the 3rd position in the Coaches Poll. Page’s 1-2 punch of Latrisha Blackstar and Charity Curley are legitimate but the supporting cast is shaky. SW#9 Page was missing Kimi Nex.

Nadya and Nastia Bishton again led Mountain Ridge to a team title. In a race where overall time decides the outcome not many teams in Arizona have a chance against Mountain Ridge. Page was much improved over their performance at Flagstaff earlier in the year. They may not be a top 10 team in the Southwest region but new head coach Theo Martin is getting his girls into the grove. Look for them to return to the legendary Page form soon.

Casper Invitational
8/24/07
Casper, Wyoming

Campbell County 44 Cheyenne Central 46 Sheridan 68 Natrona County 69 Laramie 113

Campbell County brought 5 girls from Gillette to compete in Casper and those 5 girls were good enough to defeat the competition. But with only five girls there seems to be little room for error for the Camels. Leading the way for the Camels was Kayla Corcoran who made an immediate impact in the first race of the season. She is the real deal. Cheyenne Central has plenty of depth. The Indians ran well in their first race but fell short to the Camels by two points. The future is bright for the Indians as three of the girls who ran in the JV race ran faster than Campbell County’s #4.
