Rolando Trammel stars with wins in the 60H and LJ

Highlights
- Rolando Trammel (Highland High School, Albuquerque NM) completes an impressive double, winning the 60 hurdles in 8.39 and the Long Jump with a leap of 22-06.50
- Jordan Diaz (Heritage Track Club, San Jose, CA) doubles in the 400m (59.28) and the Mile (5:24.56)
- Symone Evans (Heritage Track Club, San Jose, CA) takes the 60m Hurdles (9.34) going away and then leaps 34-08.50 in the triple jump to complete her own double
- Hope Christian’s Ryan Fenton wins the mile for the 2nd straight week, running 4:35.7
Meet Report

Nearly 200 athletes converged on the Albuquerque Convention Center for the second of three high school all-comers meets hosted by the University of New Mexico. Head Coach Joe Franklin was excited about the turn out, but he hoped that more athletes would take advantage of the facility and competition. In an effort to accomplish that, Coach Franklin has opened up the February 7th New Mexico State Indoor Championships to all New Mexico High School Athletes. Franklin explained that, “The fast, Championship Heats, will be made up of athletes with qualifying marks (from the first three all-comers meets), but we will run more heats giving more athletes the opportunity to compete." All of the proceeds (garnered from meet fees and admission cost) are being donated to The Great Southwest Classic and New Mexico USATF.
On the track, the competition improved this week as several notable competitors decided to toe the line. In the Boys competition it was Rolando Trammel (Highland High School) who stole the show by easily winning the two events he was entered in. Trammel is the 5A defending state champion in Long Jump, 110m Hurdles and the 300m Hurdles. He is the 5A State Record Holder in the 300m Hurdles. Trammel will not be back in action at the convention center until February 7. Next weekend he will take his first official visit to Northern Iowa. Currenlty he has narrowed down his college choices to: Northern Iowa, UNM, Texas A&M, University of Louisiana Lafayette, and Arizona. Cibola High’s Matt Valenzuela was able to vindicate himself by winning an exciting 400m dash. Last week Valenzuela slipped on the 2nd turn during the 200m dash. Valenzuela returned to the track, this time with his spikes, and blazed a 50.15 for the 400m victory. Last spring Valenzuela won the 200m and 400m dashes as a sophomore.
The depth of the distance events improved this week with the arrival of the Red Army as a handful of Albuquerque Academy’s distance crew donned their Trail 365 uniforms. But the track still belonged to Ryan Fenton of Hope Christian NM. Fenton, the 3A defending champion in the 1600m, won going wire to wire in the Mile Run. Next week Fenton will run the 800m and will also be looking for a Mile/2 Mile double at the NM Championships. In the 800m run, former UNM Lobo Juan Ortega was the overall winner, but the first high school athlete to cross the line was Academy’s Ryan Clark. On the field, one of the most impressive performances of the day was turned in by Rio Rancho High School junior, Daniel Fant, who cleared 13-00.00 in the Pole-Vault. The event was won by UNM Grad Robert Caldwall but Fant, the #1 returnee in 5A, was the top high school performer.
The depth in the girl’s competition was provided by the Heritage Track Club out of San Jose California. Heritage's top two standouts were able to earn a pair of impressive double victories. Jordan Diaz’s double in the Mile and 400m was impressive considering she was coming from an elevation of 85’ in San Jose to 5300’ in Albuquerque. The thin air did not stop her from winning both events easily. Her teammate, Symone Evans, crushed the competition and a few hurdles on her way to a dominating performance in the 60m hurdles. The 800m run saw the return of Aleona Reyes of Belen High School. Reyes suffered a stress fracture in cross country that cut her season short and may have cost the Eagles a second straight team title. Reyes, the 4A defending Champ in the 800m, had to come from behind for her victory this weekend as Rio Rancho 8th Grader Alana Littleford took the pace out hard. On the field Monquisha Coleman (Manzano) jumped 16-05.00 to take home the gold in the long jump. Coleman is the defending 5A champ in the Long Jump and an all state spinter.
