Sunflower League @ Rim Rock Farm, Lawrence 10/14/06

Olathe East girls and Shawnee Mission Northwest boys take titles in strong fashion. Rebeka Stowe (Olathe Northwest 15:09 5k) and Jimmy Ward (SM West 16:40 5k) win individual titles.

Arguably the strongest cross country conference in Kansas, the Sunflower League schools (consisting of schools in Eastern Kansas and the Kansas City area) met at RimRock Farm on a morning that was cold at the beginning, but quickly heated up with competition. In the girls race, #2 6A Olathe East packed six runners into the top twenty-one to score 56 points, with # 3 6A Lawrence second with 86. Coming power Olathe Northwest scored 114 for third in from of state ranked powers SM East, SM Northwest, and SM South. Individually, Rebeka Stowe, (Olathe Northwest) made a strong move up the Billy Mills Incline to power away from Olathe East's Amanda Miller, winning 15:09 to 15:15. Lawrence's Kelly Renfro was third at 15:19, with Haley Beggs (SM South) and Lisa Imgrund (SM Northwest) close at 15:23 for the hilly 4k course.

Shawnee Mission Northwest (# 1 6A) continued their strangle-hold on the boys cross country scene, packing well early and powering through the field after the mile mark tow win with 43 points. Shawnee Mission West (90) continued their climb in the the state's rankings, as the # 7 6A Vikings edged # 3 6A Olathe East for second 90-94. A tight pack of about eight runners whittled themselves down throughout the race, with Jimmy Ward of SM West bursting out of the woods after the Billy Mills hill to power to a 16:40 4k win, with Josh Weems (SM Northwest) closing fast for second in 16:43. Raynard Smith of Olathe East, who helped share pacing chores much of the race, was third at 16:52, with Dylan Hedges (Lawrence) fourth 16:53, and fellow-pace setter Matt Horn (Olathe South) fifth at 17:00.

Emporia boys (# 2 5A) score 44 to win the boy's race with Manhattan second (63). Clay Schneider (Seaman, Topeka) runs a 16:21 to win over the hilly 5k.
