Yankton wins 3rd straight double victory

Highlights
  • In the girls AA race, HL#1/US#9 Yankton won another title with 58 points, 17 better than HL#3 Sioux Falls Roosevelt.  The teams were even through 3 runners, but Yankton pulled away on its 4th and 5th.  Yankton has won 5 straight and it was the 4th straight year the teams have been 1-2. 
  • Sturgis fr Madeline Takahashi won a battle of youth up front in the AA race, pulling away from a pack at the end to win in 15:33.  She was followed by the top girls for SFR (soph Bailey Breems 15:36) and Yankton (soph Mariah Hofer 15:39).
  • Yankton and Roosevelt were even closer in the boys AA race, with Yankton pulling out an 87-91 victory, its 3rd straight.  Roosevelt led through three, but Yankton's #4 Ben Pratt proved a key to victory in 18th place.  Brad Anderson led the winners in 7th.  It was the best-ever finish for SFR.
  • Individually, 1:53 800 man and Pierre sr Travis Fitzke took the title in 15:55, followed by Brandon Valley sr Greg Beesley, and defending champ Bill Kogel, the SFR senior who's been coming back from illness.
  • In Class A boys (four score), junior Andy Coy was runner-up (1st, team-wise in 16:25) and led Hill City to victory with 40 points, 12 up on Redfield.  Hill City had 3 of the top 7.  Redfield was led by sr. Joe Noyes in 3rd, while the runner-up was Todd County soph Marc Whirlwind Soldier (16:31).
  • The best overall in Class A was Hot Springs sr Eamin Entwisle in 16:12.
  • Custer had just enough depth on the back end to overcome Cheyenne-Eagle Butte's 1-3 team-scoring finish and win the girls Class A title with 58 points.  CEB's soph Jordan Wohlleber was the runner-up overall with a 15:51 4k.
  • Britton-Hecla 8th-grader Kelsey Barrett was the fastest in Class A overall (not with a team) in 15:38.
  • In Class B boys (score 3), soph Mitch Craft paced Wessington Springs to a 26-point total with his runner-up finish in 16:54.  Estelline was 2nd with 33. 
  • The Class B individual champ, for the 3rd straight year, was jr Kiko Mendoza of Takini in 16:39.
  • In Class B girls, it was Kadoka winning with 17 to 2nd-place Scotland's 25.  Kadoka was led by 7th-grader Shaley Herber and jr Abby Niehoff in 4th and 5th (team-scoring) with 16:45/16:46. 
  • Eureka-Bowdle soph Hilary Krein took the overall title in 16:11 for Class B, with Laura Wolles losing a big lead with a near-collapse, but still taking 3rd..
