Olathe East girls and Lawrence boys score big wins in battle of state ranked powers
Avery Clifton (Washburn Rural) and Roy Wedge (Lawrence) take impressive wins over deep fields

Defending 6A champ Avery Clifton (Washburn Rural, Topeka) continued her undefeated season,
cruising to an almost one minute victory at the Seaman Invitational over a rolling course at
Shawnee North Activity Complex in Topeka. Clifton simply powered away from the field from the
start, eventually cruising in a at a very fast 14:16 4k, looking smooth and relaxed. Brenna
McDannold of Olathe East took second in a deep girls field, running 15:14, and leading her
Olathe East team to the team title. Kristin Strecker, (Hayden, Topeka), a state 4A contender
was third in 15:23, with Brooklyn Ellis (Olathe East 15:30) and Ramsey McCarter (Seaman, Topeka
15:48) rounding out the top five.KS #3 Olathe East placed four runners in the top ten to take
the team title from #4 ranked Washburn Rural (58). Lawrence was third with 70 points. In the boys race, a pack of three all-staters quickly broke away from the field, with Roy Wedge
(Lawrence), Aaron Pope (Washburn Rural) and Ryan Hocker (Olathe East) racing away. Wedge appeared
to push the pace, and broke away with about a half mile to go in a wooded section of the course
Wedge continued on to a fast 15:49 5k win, with Pope second (16:04) and Hocker third (16:09).
Alex Mahaffey (Washburn Rural 16:18) and Brock Nooney (Haysville Campus, Wichita, 16:22) rounded
out the top five. In a battle of 6A state contenders, defending state champ Lawrence packed well
enough to squeak out a victory over Washburn Rural 43-45, with Campus (last years third place
