HL#1 Roosevelt girls take 1st title
Defenders Yankton just 3rd, but YHS boys win; Hilson and Heitkamp are fastest

Team Champs:
  • Class AA - Yankton boys 53 over Rapid City Stevens 101; Sioux Falls Roosevelt girls 42 over Aberdeen Central/SDBVI 70
  • Class A - Cheyenne-Eagle Butte boys 39 over Flandreau Indian School 76; Chamberlain girls 63 over Custer 80
  • Class B - Wessington Springs boys 18 over Estelline 21; Kadoka girls 9 over Lemmon 35
Class AA Highlights
  • HL#1 Sioux Falls Roosevelt broke a long Yankton streak of championships and took the team title with 42 points, with Aberdeen Central second with 70 and defending champion Yankton third with 98.  Roosevelt put five runners in the top fourteen to win convicingly. 
  • Megan Hilson of Yankton won the individual title at 15:42, edging Seanna Kautz of Roosevelt (15:43).  Bridget Simmons (Pierre) was third at 16:06, just ahead of Courtney Neubert (Aberdeen Central, 16:08).
  • Yankton's boys team powered to a 53 point total, with Stevens (Rapid City) second with 101. Yankton dominated with five finishers in the top 18. 
  • Josh Heitkamp, a Sioux Falls Washington junior, continued his domination of the state, winning in 15:57.  Alec Espeland of Pierre was second in 16:14, with Henderson Shaun of host Huron giving the home folks a thrill with a 16:23 finish, just ahead of Yankton leader Travis Brenner (16:26).
Class A Highlights
  • Kiko Mendoza of Cheyenne-Eagle Butte became SD's first-ever four-time state XC champ.  He won three Class B titles at Takini, but transferred to Cheyenne-Eagle Butte last winter.  Mendoza took the lead about halfway through the race, and ran to a 16:19 win.  Alex Munterfering (Parkston) pushed Mendoza the whole way, running 16:25, with Andy Coy (Hill City) third at 16:37. 
  • Mendoza led Cheyenne-Eagle Butte to the team title with 39 points, with Flandreau Indian School second (76) and Redfield third (88).
  • Todd County's Lottie Grimshaw, an 8th grader, won the girls title convicingly in 16:19, defeating defending champion Kelsey Barrett (Britton-Hecia, 16:37).  Karley Konkel of Custer was third at 16:42. 
  • Chamberlain used a 5-6 finish from 7th graders Maci Burke and Taylor Harming to score 63 points to win from a tightly packed Custer team (80).  West Central was third with 100.
Class B Highlights
  • Mendoza's move left the field wide-open and Jeffrey Mettler (Eureka-Bowdle) took advantage to win in 17:14, with Mitch Kraft (Wessington Springs) second at 17:19 and Brandon Krein (Estelline) third at 17:21.  
  • Mitch Kraft was joined by twin Drew in fourth to lead Wessington Springs to the team title with 18 points (3 scoring).  Estelline was second with 21 points and McIntosh third with 48.
  • The girls race saw more of Wessington Springs' Kraft family win gold, as freshman sister Mindy Kraft took the title with a 17:03 run.  Shaley Herber (Kadoka) was second in 17:15, edging Hilary Krein (Eureka-Bowdle, 17:17).  
  • Kadoka took the team title with 9 points, with Lemmon second with 35 and Estelline third with 38.
