Big MN weekend begins at Faribault

The first of two big meets of the weekend in Minnesota took place at Faribault (with the second coming on Saturday at Hopkins). Coming into the meet on the boys side was the MN#7/HL#8 Stillwater, MN#8 Owatonna and MN#10 White Bear Lake, along with top individuals like MN#2 Robel Kebede (Mpls. South) and John-Michael Brandt of Winona, previously ranked MN#4.
Holding to form, Kebede was in a lead pack consisting of four runners from the gun. The first mile passed in a strong 4:57, then Kebede and Brandt crossed the two mile at 10:15 stride for stride. By ¾ mile to go, Kebede had gapped Brandt and kicked in for a strong time of 15:49.
Brandt finished second (16:02), holding off first-year runner Gemechu Bekelcho (Mpls. Edison), who finished in third only a second behind him. Rounding out the top five was Owatonna’s Jacob Bastyr and White Bear Lake’s Bill Struntz.
The team race was even closer, with the top three teams separated by three points and each of those teams having 1-5 spreads of 40 seconds or less. Coming in first place was MN#10 White Bear Lake with a total of 78 points, led by senior Bill Struntz in 4th place. In second place with the same score of 78 points was MN#8 Owatonna. The sixth-man tie-breaker came down to a difference of 1.7 seconds, with White Bear Lake freshman Joel Riechow (16:48.2) edging out Owatonna soph Justin Velzke (16:49.9), truly showing that the old NTN slogan “Every Teammate Counts” is still true in 2008. These two teams were very similar with one front runner and then each team’s #2-#7 runners all within 21 seconds of each other.
In a surprise third was the team from Lakeville North with 81 points. They were led by 4 runners placing 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th and had a 5-man spread of 16 seconds. MN#7 Stillwater placed 5th with 104 points behind Minneapolis South in 4th.
The girl’s race was just as good as the boys, with entries highlighted by MN#2/HL#7 Lakeville North. Individually, there was defending AA State Champ and current MN#1 Laura Hughes (Mankato West) along with MN#2 Caitlin Hewes (Stillwater), MN#7 Rachel Drake (White Bear Lake) and MN#11 Claire Guidinger (Winona).
The race was taken out by junior Hughes and sophomore sensation Guidinger in 5:36. Guidinger, standing around 5’0”, is springing onto the Minnesota scene and running “tall” all over her competition. After the mile mark, she started gapping Hughes slowly and with 400 meters to go she had a 20 second lead over Hughes and a chasing pack consisting of Hewes, Drake and LN 8th grader Taylor Perkins.
Guidinger cruised in with one of the top times put on the Faribault course, a 14:21 for 4K. In a battle that came down to the last 50 meters, Hewes edged out Drake for second and Perkins grabbed 4th by 0.2 seconds over Hughes.
Lakeville North showed their championship prowess again as they’ve done for what seems like forever. With a great 1-5 spread of 37 seconds, they scored 47 and won by 22. They were led by 8th grader Perkins in 4th, and then seniors Michelle Volz and Solange Miller in 8th/9th respectively. Coming in second, led by Guidinger, was the team of Winona and third was the Hewes-led squad of Stillwater.
