Manhattan Boys, DeSoto girls take team titles in mud-bath

Emporia's Jones Park is usually known as a quick layout, with it's gently rolling hills and firm footing. Unfortunately, six inches of rain over two days can turn the fastest of courses into a swampy quagmire, with is what happened. In a match-up of top boys state contenders, Manhattan (6A) topped 5A favorite St. Thomas Aquinas 44-51, with Washburn Rural (Topeka) third with 75. PJ Greer of Aquinas won his second major invitational of the season after topping the field at the Greg Wilson Invitational in Overland Park. Greer negotiated the muddy 5k to win in 17:30. Adam Porter of McPherson was second in 17:49, edging Graham Armstrong (Manhattan, 17:50) and Kyle Hanson (Aquinas) 17:53.
In the girls race, new faces abounded as DeSoto's girls team, second in 4A last year, took a major step forward, defeating HL #6 Manhattan 50-54 with Olathe South third (81).
Avery Clifton (Washburn Rural, Topeka) continues her quick rise in cross country ranks, running 16:06 over 4k to win, with the Desoto duo of Sheridan (16:14) and Lacey Erickson (16:50) running 2nd and 3rd. Carolina Hale (Shawnee Heights, Topeka 16:50) was fourth and Marley Crusch (Manhattan 16:53) fifth, with Keli Russell (Olathe South sixth 16:59) in a loaded girls field.
