NTN Midwest Top Ten Report

MW#2 York IL boys deals with adversity; MW#3 Waukesha West WI girls dethroned

Week ending Oct. 28, 2006

By Scott Bush, NTN Midwest Editor

Boys - Girls

Wind, rain and mud were commonplace this past weekend, as states had their state qualifying races and state meets.  It rained for a few days before in every state, which made courses very interesting and sloppy as runners tried to run their best races of the season.  On the boys side the top teams won in grand fashion, while on the girls side a lot happened and the rankings will be shook up a bit this week.  Overall it was a great week and this coming weekend three more state meets will take place.

Boys

1. Dexter, MI -

Once again Dexter ran as a pack and swept the top five places, as they won their regional easily 15 - 66 over Chelsea.  Their top four runners all ran within a second of one another, while their fifth man was a mere ten seconds off of them.  Ryan Neely scored the win this week, while the team prepares to run something truly impressive at the state meet.

Next Meet: State Meet, 11/04/06.

2. York, IL -

Another weekend of easy running bodes well for the Dukes of York as they head into the state meet covered in coaching controversy.  As many of your readers know, Head Coach Joe Newton and Assistant Coach Charlie Kern both were suspended for the remainder of the season for breaking summer contact rules as put in place by the IHSA.  Despite this, York still came out Saturday and ran with a chip on their shoulder, and it showed, as they won 18-82 over second place New Trier.  Placing their top six in the top eight bod well for the team, running with a great split time of only 34 seconds 1-5.  York is the heavy favorite next weekend at the Illinois State Meet, and should be running to show that they are still the best no matter what hangs over their heads and win one for their coaches.

3. Woodridge, OH -

Another week, another dominating performance by Woodridge.  This team is simply dominating their competition now, as they head towards their state meet next weekend.  Placing 1-4, Woodridge scored a mere 19 points, winning by 120 points over their nearest competition.  A 54 second spread was a very solid performance considering the horrible course conditions.  The best performance however was their 22 second split from 1-4.  If they do this again they will prove they are very worthy of a look from the NTN committee.
1. Scott Hilditch - 17:00
2. David Petrak - 17:13
3. Joey McCoy - 17:18
4. Brian Himelright - 17:22

Next Meet: State Meet, 11/04/06.

4. LaSalle, OH -

Despite having one of their top five runners, Corey Spriggs, having an off day, LaSalle decimated the competition at their regional, winnning 44-102 over the second place squad.  Running their normal great pack race, Kyle Lang once again led the charge running a solid 16:07 over a very wet course, while fifth man Mitchell Huesman was only 47 seconds back.  LaSalle faced their stiffest competition in the past few weeks and still won by nearly 60 points.  This was a great team effort, as they placed their entire top six in the top 22 team scoring positions.  Next week they will have their shot to square off against MW #5 St. John's Jesuit and make that one last push for NTN.
2. Kyle Lang - 16:07
9. Jake Nusekabel - 16:30
13. Ricky Lupp - 16:40

Next Meet: State Meet, 11/04/06.

5. St. John's Jesuit, OH -

Running on a incredibly muddy course and through wind and rain Saturday, St. John's Jesuit pulled off a narrow victory over Lakewood 78-82.  This race came down to the wire and SJJ's 3-4 split caught up to them, as they placed their top trio in the top eight, while their 4-5 runners were 52 seconds back from their third.  This team has won a lot this year and won a close race once again.  With their top three up front leading the charge, SJJ will face stiff competition in MW #4 LaSalle next weekend, but will definitely lay it all out there, as they have as good as shot to win the state title as anyone.
3. Joe Miller - 16:39
5. Matt Lemon - 16:51
8. Chris Lemon - 17:06
36. Ben Schoonmaker - 17:58

Next Meet: State Meet, 11/04/06.

6. Palatine, IL -

Muddy and windy course conditions provided a considerable test for Palatine as they prepared run their last race before the state meet.  Running against the always tough Schaumburg squad, Palatine sqeeked out a 69-77 win, placing three in the top ten and having a very good performance from their fifth man Eddie Lopez.  Running without their normal #4 for the second week in a row, Palatine showed well, running with a fifty second split 1-5, despite normal #1/2 man Sagar Patel falling 800m into the race.  The Illinois state meet is going to be a war next weekend, with any of six teams or so having a shot at a trophy outside of the heavy favorite York.
5. Mat Smoody - 16:10
7. Sagar Patel - 16:22
8. Matt Dettloff - 16:25
23. Alex Mourousias - 16:59

Next Meet: State Meet, 11/04/06.

7. Pinckney, MI -

After running sub-par for a couple of weeks, last week Pinckney took the week to refocus and regroup and start their charge towards a state title.  On Saturday Pinckney gained a lot of momentum as they won their regional 23-80 over Howell.  While placing 1-2-3 and scoring their top five in the top ten, this squad made a statement that they are far from done and have a lot to prove.  A great 40 split seperated their top five runners and if they run this same race next weekend, they will be state champions!
1. David Emery - 16:57
2. Brenden Marcum - 16:57
3. Mike Katsefaras - 16:57
7. Matt Wines - 17:26

Next Meet: State Meet, 11/04/06.

8. Bloomington North, IN -

The Indiana state meet was wide open Saturday, as Bloomington North tried to run their best race of the year when it mattered most.  Despite running a tactically sound race and having one of the better 1-5 splits of the day (65 seconds), BN simply did not have enough up top to compete with the likes of the top three teams, Warren Central (100 points), Franklin Central (123) and Carmel (132).  BN finished fourth with 139 points, just missing a state trophy.  Michael Hoffman was the top junior in the race, as he finished eighth in the team scoring, while Tim Schoch and Will Autio ran well to finish in the top 25 as well.  While BN has to be somewhat disappointed that they did not earn a trophy, they had a great season and should be one of the top two favorites heading into the fall season next year.
8. Michael Hoffmann -16:22
23. Tim Schoch - 16:57
24. Will Autio - 16:58

9. Sandburg, IL -

For the past month Sandburg has simply rolled through their competition.  They nearly perfect scored their conference and regional meets.  However, Saturday provided more of a challenge than they had seen since the Palatine Invitational, and Sandburg rose to the occassion.  A big 22 point win over top eight ranked Lincoln Way East, 62-84, helped this squad gain some great momentum heading into the state meet this coming weekend.  A fantastic split of 17 seconds seperated their top four runners, something they have practiced all year.  While the times were not as fast as past weeks, this can be explained by running on one of the tougher courses in northern Illinois and the fact that the course was incredibly muddy in parts.  If they run a similar race at state a top three trophy is definitely a possibility!
6. Kevin Adamowski - 16:35
9. Justin Smith - 16:39
12. Brad LaRocque - 16:47
13. Tom Sideras - 16:52

Next Meet: State Meet, 11/04/06.

10. Franklin Central, IN -

Every week for the past month, Franklin Central has had to battle with everything they could muster in order to win their races.  They have faced Warren Central, Carmel and a few other great teams, which have really made this team strong.  Saturday, at their state meet, they raced their best race possible and finished in second, 23 points behind state champion Warren Central.  With a great split of 47 seconds from 1-4, this helped FC garner their second place finish, while Zach Jenkins was their fifth man 34 seconds back from their fourth and turned in a solid performance as well to help cap their score.  FC had a great season and congratulations on a second place state trophy!

Girls

1. Westfield, IN -

Being the top team all year is a hard expectation to live up to.  Being the key team every week, getting every other teams best efforts because they want to be the team to knock you down is a tough role to play.  On Saturday in Terra Haute, IN, Westfield won the state championship 114-129 over Valpariso and Noblesville.  Using an impressive effort up top from their top three runners, Westfield simply ran away from the field.  Their trifecta of leaders ran a great split of 23 seconds to place in the top eight in the team scoring, while their fourth runner Breanne Ehrman also had a solid race.  It got a little scary for this squad as their fifth runner was nearly a minute back from their fourth, but in the end they prevailed.  With their normal number five nearly recovered from a foot injury, this team should be much stronger by the time NTN rolls around.  Great job Westfield!
2. Maggie Bingham - 14:38
5. Kaitlyn Love - 14:55
8. Kristina Krasich - 15:01
26. Breanne Ehrman - 15:33

2. Minster, OH -

A strong group effort and having nearly a minute split from 1-7 helped Minster win their regional 41-73 over Versailles.  Placing their top two runners in the top three spots and having a great pack behind them really helped this team gain a big win heading into the state meet, where they should win rather easily.  They are in one of the smaller divisions in Ohio, which while still competitive, the depth is not as great.  Minster has had some huge wins this year and should they win and turn in yet another impressive performance, their NTN tickets may be waiting for them at the finish line.
2. Brigitte Sherman - 19:42
3. Bernadette Burke - 19:55
11. Jessica Albers - 20:15
15. Katie Dahlinghaus - 20:18
16. Lauren Fausey - 20:19

Next Meet: State Meet, 11/04/06.

3. Waukesha West, WI -

A few weeks back Waukesha West lost to Middleton in a strange scoring flighted meet in Wisconsin.  West showed some weakness not up front, but rather in their 4-5 spots.  On Saturday at their state meet, this weakness was exposed once again and Middleton took advantage of it and ran a great team race to win the Wisconsin state title 81-104 over Waukesha West.  Despite placing their top three runners in the top nine team scoring spots, their gap of nearly a minute to their fifth runner really hurt them as Middleton put all of their team between them.  West had a fantastic year though and despite losing at state, they should be very proud of all they accomplished.
5. Laura Koch - 15:02
8. Alyssa Beste - 15:09
9. Karlye Wolff - 15:09
37. Krista White - 15:54

4. Bowling Green, OH -

With the loss of their 3/4 runner Shannon Titus for the weekend due to an injury, Bowling Green showed their lack of depth and it hurt them a lot, as they placed 3rd with 139 points, 48 points behind second place Magnificat.  Frontrunners Christy Titus and Barbara Powers did what they needed to do, as both runners placed in the top five and scored a mere four team points for BG.  Anne-Marie Simon also had an outstanding race.  Despite the best efforts for their fifth runner, the split of over a minute between their 4-5 is what put them in third.  If Shannon Titus can come back and run right with Simon like she has all year this team has a shot at winning yet another state title, however if this is not the case than they will need a miracle race out of their fifth and sixth runners.
1. Christy Titus - 20:17
3. Barbara Powers - 20:29
15. Anne-Marie Simon - 21:01
40. Alyssa Glenn - 21:46

5. Hinsdale Central, IL -

Packing it up has been the Hinsdale Central game plan in seems for most of the season.  Saturday at their sectional it was no different as HC won 88-101 over Naperville North.  Led once again by their trio of Rosemary Hines, Gina Kapusta and Emily Cleary, HC used a strong group to outdistance themselves from the rest of the field.  Their split was a wonderful 53 seconds, while they beat many of the top 15 ranked teams in the state.  While the course was incredibly messy and the winds were very strong, HC turned in a solid performance that should give them plenty of momentum rolling into state next weekend.
8. Rosemary Hines - 19:44
12. Gina Kapusta - 20:00
16. Emily Cleary - 20:04
26. Elaine Kuckertz - 20:25

6. Rockford, MI -

Despite winning their regional 41-60 over Traverse City Central, Rockford is hurting bad.  With frontrunner Katie Haines running fantastic right now, they have a little room for error up top, but they have two runners, Emma Crosby and Rachel Wittum who are not running very well right now and this could hurt them immensly at state.  Brittany Dixon ran a great race to place fourth, however, their 1-5 split was 2:15, which is a huge gap that will have tons of teams full scoring squads placed in between.  They ran on a very fast course on Saturday, and scored well, but a little bit more is needed if they hope to win.
1. Katie Haines - 17:50
4. Brittany Dixon - 19:02
8. Chelsea Shibler - 19:35
11. Emma Crosby - 19:46
17. Rachel Wittum - 20:05

Next Meet: State Meet, 11/04/06.

7. Barrington, IL -

For the past few weeks Barrington has been searching for a fifth runner.  They had yet to find that solid fifth girl leading up to sectionals, but their hope was easily apparent early on, that they were merly going to run their top runners as close to the front as possible and hope with that low score they could pull off the win.  While frontrunner Rebecca Tracy had a fantastic performance, leading for the first two miles, Barrington's fifth runner was simply too far back and they lost 94-99 to Palatine.  With a 40 second gap between their 4-5 runners, the Fillies needed their top pack to place a little bit higher.  Over a minute gap between 1-3 hurt them as well.  Barrington has been running strong all season long and still has a chance to win the state title next Saturday in Peoria, but they will need to run a bit better.
3. Rebecca Tracy - 18:52
14. Danielle Locascio - 19:45
18. Samantha Learch - 19:56
19. Molly Glantz - 20:00
45. Valery Taylor - 20:40

8. Livonia Churchill, MI -

Running on hands down the fastest state qualifying course, Livonia Churchill scored a big win 30-78 over Northville to head into the Michigan State Meet feeling very confident in their chances to win.  Megan Maceratini and Alyssa Mira again led teh way for this squad, as they finished 1-2 overall.  Sara Kroll and Rachel McFarlane also finished in the top six.  However, their fifth runner was over a minute back from their fourth in sixteenth place.  They will need that gap to close if they hope to win next weekend.  Their front four though are running amazing right now and have a great shot to really put some of the other top teams behind big through four runners.
1. Megan Maceratini - 19:00
2. Alyssa Mira - 19:09
5. Sara Kroll - 19:34
6. Rachel McFarlane - 19:39
16. Lindsey Marlow - 20:46

Next Meet: State Meet, 11/04/06.

9. Magnificat, OH -

A solid race from 1-7, with a split of 50 seconds for their scorers, was not enough at regionals on Saturday, as Magnificat lost to Brunswick by 13 points, scoring 91.  Running with an amazingly young squad, having four freshmen in their top five, Magnificat ran hard from start to finish on the incredibly muddy 5k course.  Despite the loss, Magnificat did beat MW #4 Bowling Green by a solid margin and has a lot of momentum heading into the state meet Saturday.
6. Madeline Chambers - 20:36
18. Katherine McHenry - 21:15
19. Abby Fischer - 21:16
22. Mary Whitmore - 21:21

Next Meet: State Meet, 11/04/06.

10. Noblesville, IN -

Heading into the state meet Saturday, Noblesville knew that if they ran their perfect race they had a shot at beating MW #1 Westfield for the state title.  Well, Noblesville did run nearly a perfect race, however one of their top girls was injured and finished nearly last in the race.  Noblesville raced hard through the first half of the race and looked in great position nearing the finish.  It was hard to tell who had won the race, with Westfield's top runners so high up and Noblesville's pack racking up points in the middle.  As the results came out Noblesville was tied for second with Valpariso, both scoring 129 points (15 points behind Westfield), but lost on the sixth runner rule, thus taking home the third place trophy.  Noblesville had a great season and ran a great state race!  Their 1-5 split was less than a minute , and although they didn't have anyone in the top ten, they did happen to place their top three girls in the top twenty team scoring spots.
12. Erica Watson - 15:17
