Highlights

Girls
  • In the first-ever state meet 5k for Indiana girls, MW#1 Westfield was led by senior Margaret Bingham in 4th (3rd team-scoring) and then won the battle at every spot, 2nd through 5th girl, for its expected dominant victory. It was the third straight title for the school. They scored 81, with MW#2 Lake Central in 2nd with 114, and MW honorable mention Fort Wayne Carroll overcoming MW#5 Carmel for 3rd, 119-146.
  • Carroll gained enough points with its 1-2 of freshman Brianna Johnson (New Haven semi-state champ) and senior Chelsea Blanchard, who were 4th-6th in team scoring, that the depth of Carmel couldn't make it up. Blanchard was almost a minute behind her teammate at semi-state, but this time was within 9 seconds. Lake Central pulled almost even with Carroll with their 3rd girl, then edged ahead with 4 and 5.
  • With a 17-second victory in 18:21, Culver Academies sr Alex Banfich, a 2-time Foot Locker qualifier, won her third straight state title, with her 18:21 beating Valparasio jr Megan Ranegar's 18:38. Banfich joins Celest Sunsis and Courtney Adams as 3-time champs.
  • Avon sr and Franklin Central semi-state champ Lorna Whaley (18:46) won a close battle for 3rd, beating Westfield's Bingham (18:48) and Carroll's Johnson (also 18:48).
Boys
  • MW#10 Fishers didn't have it easy, but scored a 10-point win over MW honorable mention LaPorte, 102-112. It was the first-ever title for Fishers and the highest finish ever for LaPorte. Fishers' biggest advantage came with the 9th-place (team-scoring) finish of #2 man Cale Allen (16:20). Fisher's #1 man was Drew Shields, 3rd in team-scoring and 5th overall (16:04).
  • National championship contender Michael Fout was the expected dominant champ in 15:31 in less-than-ideal conditions.
  • With his 2nd-place finish in 15:56, Ft. Wayne Carroll freshman James Martin proved to be one of the country's top 9th-graders. He nipped Shakamack sr Anthony Witt (15:58), with Hamilton Southeastern sr Zach Gates 4th in 16:02. With last year's top 11 finishers all seniors, there were bound to be some new faces at the top. Fout was battling health problems last year at this time and didn't even make state.
