ILLINOIS PREP TOP TIMES
IHSA BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
CLASS 3A 2007 SEASON PREVIEW and RATINGS

prepared by Michael Newman
([email protected])

A new year, a new system implemented by the IHSA. Class 3A has the largest of all Illinois schools. The biggest controversy is the IHSA only having 4 sectionals in this biggest class…a lot of great teams and individuals will not get the opportunity to run at Detweiller in November.

Elmhurst York will attempt to win its 6th successful team championship and will have plenty of teams that could knock them off. Naperville Neuqua Valley, Naperville North, Aurora Waubonsie Valley, and Wheaton North look to be the big squads that will challenge the Dukes.

The individual race should be fun to watch with Kevin Havel of Arlington Heights Hersey, Chris Derrick of Naperville Neuqua Valley, Mat Smoody of Palatine, and Tom Achtien of Elmhurst York being the favorites.

Team and individual previews are in alphabetical order - Pre-Season Team Ratings

2006 Finish: 12th Class AA State Meet

Returnees: Kevin Havel SR (2nd, 14:12), Bill Wisser SR (36th, 14:58), Eric Stanton JR (105th, 15:30), Mike McCarton SR (169th, 15:55), Eric Johanson SR (189th, 16:04), Mitch Pajcic SR (201st, 16:12), Mike Tisza SR (232nd, 16:43).

Outlook: Tim Phillips has all of his top 7 returning from a team that has high expectations for this upcoming season. Senior Kevin Havel is the top returnee state-wide and along with Bill Wisser, provides great leadership for this team. Mike Tisza had a great summer of training and could be a surprise. Eric Stanton’s track season was a plus and could be correlated to a great fall campaign. The remaining spots are up for grabs, but Phillips has the depth to choose from. Watch for Seniors Mike McCarton, Mitch Pajcic, Eric Johansen, and Sophomore Matt Cwiok to challenge for those spots. Hersey has a stretch of 3 big invites in September along with a dual against Palatine in early October to show how good this team is.

Outlook: Many onlookers discounted Dave Severance’s Waubonsie Valley Team last fall and they finished in the Top 5. The same can be said about this year’s team. 5 runners return looking to gain more recognition. The Warriors will have to rely again on a tight pack led by Seniors Mark & David Schumacher. Juniors Ryan Shea and Emmett Lorenz were within 15 seconds of the Schumachers the last 3 meets last season and will have to maintain that gap. The key for the team will be finding a 5th runner. Sean Wiggan might be the one man to fill this role. “Sean Wiggan is going to surprise a lot of people”, said Assistant Coach Kevin Rafferty. “He’s run with the Schumachers and Shea all summer and looks to be at or above the level Henry Lapka finished the season at last year. If this is true, we will be tough to beat.” This team will have to keep a tight pack. Watch for Sophomores Reid Golowski, Josh Schlagel, and Seniors Marcus McGee and Shane McCann to step up. “We would like to win the Big 12 Conference Championship again for the 3rd straight year”, said Szabo. Outlook: Cary-Grove looks to rebuild after missing qualifying for state last year. 3 runners return for Layne Holter to work with. Sophomore Phillip Fairleigh was moved to Varsity after the Palatine Invite and ended up as the 5th man at season’s end. Fairleigh ran 9:55 for 3200 meters and could lead this team. Senior Mike McNamara looks to be fully recovered and could be a front runner. Senior Jeff Boivin has shown dramatic improvement from last year and figures to be in the Top 5. Watch also for Junior Mike Zasadil, who was a standout Freshman two years ago. He was injured last fall and has been brought back slowly. Holter had a great Sophomore squad from last year moving up to provide some depth. “We expect to compete for the Conference and Regional titles this season,” said Holter. Outlook: Graduation hit Prairie Ridge hard…only 1 runner returns from a squad that finished 8th last fall in their sectional. Outlook: Richard Eschman has 4 good runners coming back, but he will need to find a fifth for the Gators to contend for the Fox Valley Conference crown. Phillip Hernandez had a good track season running 9:38 for 3200 meters and should lead South. Juniors Joe Bruezini, Josh Uvodich, and Wade Killian all ran between 10:00 and 10:10 for track and should help out. Outlook: The Dukes go for their 6th straight state championship this fall, but the road may be bumpy for this squad. “We will be a young team this year”, said York Coach Joe Newton. “With the right attitude and work, only time will tell how good we will be.” Newton starts with only two returnees from last year’s state team, but both , Senior Tom Achtien and Junior Steve Sulkin, were all state performers. Senior Mark Talbot could step in to the 3rd position. He has the talent to get there but will he put in the extra 10%? Seniors Michael Rizzo, Brian Spisiak, and Rojin Thomas all figure, according to Newton, to be challenging for the Top 5. The real sleeper could be Sophomore Adam Cecil. He has the desire to achieve and could be pushing towards Talbot and Sulkin. This could be a peak and valley season for the fans in Elmhurst. Will this team be like the 1986 squad that over achieved and won a state championship, or will it be like the 1985 team that had all the talent in the world and ended up in 4th? Like Mr. Newton stated, “ only time will tell.” The work that they did during the summer will determine how the story ends in November.

Outlook: Coach Lisa McAllister has three runners she feels could be all-state this fall. If she can find two more to step up, the Griffiths may be in the running for a high finish at State. Seniors Myles Scott-Stirn, Nathan Troester, and Ron Revord can be considered as one of the most talented trios this fall in Class 3A. McAllister will need 2 more to step up and she some good sophomore runners to choose from. Watch for Sophomores Matt Niendorf, Dan August, Joe Pavilonis to possibly do this. Senior Kyle Wanner and Senior Jeff O’Brien should also be considered in this discussion in the Top 5. This team is god enough to be in the Top 10, maybe higher if their 4-7 develops.

Garrett Hall SR, Jake Tauschler JR, John Yelle SO, Eric Blake SO, Michael Mead SO, Josh Nelson SR, Kevin Brown JR.

Outlook: A bevy of talent returns for Bob Thomson as he leads Geneva towards a Western Sun Conference title and hopefully a state berth. 6 runners return with valuable state meet experience.” Our training went well this summer”, according to Thomson. Greg Adelman has recovered from a track illness and is ready to run. Junior Andrew Nelson had a breakout track season (4:22.43 in the 1600) and had a great summer of training. Senior Evan Ehrhardt ran 9:39.93 for 3200 in track and has improved immensely over last cross country season. He should be a factor. Senior Drew Isbell and Sophomore Kevin Sparks should also be in the top 5. The Vikings ran a tight pack last season and will have to rely on that again this year for success.

Granite City

Coach: Tom Miller
2006 Finish: 8th Class AA Centralia Sectional

Returnees: Aaron Werths JR, Jordan Rozycki SR, Andrew Lanchester JR, Tommy Clark SR, Forrest Feicho SR.
Andrew Fleming JR, Derrick Winkle SR.

Outlook: 5 runners from last year’s sectional qualifying team return for Coach Tom Miller. The one runner to vastly improve during the summer according to Miller is Junior Aaron Werths. Josh Perez SR, Kyle Gonzales SO, Will Creeden JR, Chris Schupp SR, Steve Chin JR, Cale Edens JR, Joseph Valdez SO.

Outlook: This squad should be considered as one of the favorites for the Mid Suburban League. Six runners return for Matthew Dowd. Matthew Perez is finally healthy and his track season (9:33 for 3200) shows that he might be one of the Top 5 in the MSL. This team run a tight 1 -5 pack. Last fall the Hawks averaged a 40 second 1-5 split. If Russ Goers, Chris Sutphen, Emilio Saraga, and Chris Hoffman can stay within 30 seconds of Perez, this team will be tough to beat. A sleeper right now that will wake up its opponents.

Major Meet Schedule:
9/1 Early Bird Classic @ Fenton
9/15 Libertyville Invite
9/29 Peoria Central Invite
10/13 Mid Suburban League @ Palatine

He will need Juniors Tyler Fuchs, Juan Ramirez, and David Trinco to step up and be more consistent to lead Conant to post-season success.

Robby Keeler SO, Alex Lyons JR, Derek Riekmann JR, Sean Francis SR, Adam Stephens SR, Anthony Carraro SR, Jeff Boblick JR, Anthony Spatafora JR, Andy Boyd JR, Paul Smith SR, Mike Marik SR.

Outlook: An injury free summer could lead to success for this young Lions squad. Coach Mike Danner has a load of talent to choose from for his top 7 and could challenge York in the West Suburban Silver. Last year, no real runner stepped up as #1 man (5 runners were #1 runners last fall) and the same could be expected this year. LT relies on tight pack running. Watch for Seniors Sam Kehoe and Adam Stephans to lead the way. Robby Keeler was injured the summer before his Freshman year and was tough. He is healthy and could push for the top spot. If the pack can move closer to the front in races, this team could be tough to beat.

Major Meet Schedule:
9/1 Lyons Township Invite
9/8 Reavis Invite
9/15 Peoria Notre Dame Invite
9/22 Palatine Invite
9/29 Loyola Lakefront @ Chicago
10/13 West Suburban Silver @ York

Junior Gerardo Perez has recovered from a broken ankle in the spring and looks to be back in great shape. One runner to watch for is Sophomore Andrew Morrison whose brother Steve was an all state runner. He has had a great summer and should surprise a bunch of people,

Could be an interesting year for Coach Kevin Reinecker as his team goes after its 8th consecutive East Suburban Catholic Title. Alex Krouse had a great year in track last spring. It will be interesting how this transfers into a great fall. Sophomore Paul Clifford had a great summer of running and looks to be up front. Also watch for Senior Robby Olp, Senior Paul Brom, Senior Nick Sullivan, and Junior John Sullivan to challenge in the top 5. “Its going to be an uphill battle”, said Reinecker,”but the boys are determined to do the best they can and see what they are capable of.”

Mt. Prospect – Prospect
Coach: Mike Stokes
2006 Finish: 17th Class AA State Meet

Returnees:
Chris Hayek JR (102nd, 15:28), Mike Styzek SR (188th, 16:04), Albert Ciolek SO (225th, 16:30).
Brian Armgardt SR, Alex Brewer SR, Tom Lawler SR, Chris Spudic SO, Nicholas Troutman SR, Patrick Ford SO, Michael Sampson SO, Andrew Holcomb SR, Kenneth Halloran SO, Max Youngquist JR, Samuel Pederson SO.

Outlook: Mike Stokes will reload the Knights this fall. 3 runners return from last year’s top 7. This team could be young with possibly 4 underclassman in the Top 7. Chris Hayek has improved over the last 12 months and could be one of the top runners in the MSL. Sophomores Albert Ciolek and Chris Spudic will surprise people by the end of the year. Seniors Mike Styzek, Brian Armgardt, Alex Brewer, and Tom Lawler could step up and provided a much needed lift for Prospect.

Major Meet Schedule:

James Halford SR, John Held SR, Alex Kremply JR, Andrew Flaws JR, Joe Morianty SR, Justin Campbell SR, Carl Horcher SO, Ed Polanzani JR.

Outlook:
Coach Jim Halford has a future all-stater in Junior Cameron Rieger to lead his team this fall. Rieger ran 9:40 last spring in the 3200 and is just sensing how good he can be. After Rieger, 4 seniors, led by Frank Huschitt provide the remaining parts of Carmel’s top 5.

Naperville Central
Coach: Dave Ashton
2006 Finish: 7th Class AA Hinsdale Central Regional

Returnees:
Stephen Couch SR, Steven O’Donnell SR, Evan Thayer SR, Robert Senkericius SR, Brandon Gittleman SR. Patrick Kumar JR, Kevin Murphy JR, Mitchell Gilbert SO, Kyle Burkwald SO, Mark Juerkstcke SO, Antony Majic SR, Brian Bonser JR, Sharil Kilingworth SO.

Outlook: Dave Ashton steps in as the Redhawks coach. This team is on the verge of something big this fall….if they can get the right breaks. Stephen Couch is ready to take a step forward. He has the right attitude to run in the Top 25 at State. Senior Steven O’Donnell had a major break through in track and I am sure that will show starting in September. Evan Thayer has the potential to run with these two. There is enough talent on this squad to chase after cross town rival Naperville North and Wheaton North in the DuPage Valley. The question is can they stay away from the injury / sickness bug to make a push that many people believe they can.

Major Meet Schedule:
9/1 Hinsdale Central/South Invite
9/8 Peoria Woodruff Invite
9/22 Plainfield South Invite
9/29 Crete-Monee Pow Wow
10/6 Aurora West Stampede

Naperville Neuqua Valley
Coach: Paul Vandersteen
2006 Finish: 9th Class AA State Meet

Returnees:
Chris Derrick SR (3rd, 14:22), Jim Riddle SR (20th, 14:45), Mike Ruff SR (107th, 15:30), Danny Pawola JR (135th, 15:42), Brian Morenus JR (142nd, 15:45), Kevin Grady SR (179th, 15:59), Josh Budnik SR (219th, 16:24).
Bryan Winek JR, Aaron Beattie SO, Connor Shields JR, Brian Griffith JR, Luke Verbus SO, Robert James JR, Nicholas Dina SR, Ryan Perry SR, David Parast SR, Mark Birhanu SR, George Hayes SR, Alistar Duncan JR, David Wing SO.

Outlook: All 7 runners return from last year’s state team. Most onlookers consider this the best team in the state. Any of 12 runners could make up the Top 7 of this team. “We have many goals in regards to training and we believe the places and times will take care of themselves,” said Coach Paul Vandersteen. Senior All Stater Chris Derrick leads this team both on and off the course. He is one of the top runners in the state and will challenge for the individual State Championship. Senior All-Stater Jim Riddle has recovered from a track season injury and looks in the same shape he was in last fall. Junior Danny Pawola had a remarkable track season, running 9:16.5 for 3200 meters. He could be in the top 10 at State at the end of the year. Senior Mike Ruff, Senior Kevin Grady, Senior Josh Budnik, Junior Brian Morenus, Junior Connor Shields, Junior Bryan Winek, and Sophomore Aaron Beattie could all be challenging for a top 7 spot. The main problem of last years team is the gap between #2 man Riddle and the #3 man…if this gap is closed, this squad will be tough to beat. Vandersteen summed up this upcoming season with: “I guess it is ‘understood’ what we would like to accomplish.”

Major Meet Schedule:

9/1 Hinsdale Central/South Invite
9/8 Peoria Woodruff Invite
9/22 Culver Academy IN Invite
9/29 Lockport Invite
10/6 Sterling Invite

Mike Herbert JR, Jake Cusack SR, Tyler Jermann SO, David Li SR, Chenura Jayewickerene SR, Bryan Arturo SR, Bob Guthrie SO, Zach Reiser JR, Derek Box SR.

Outlook: The future is now for David Racey’s squad as they line for a hopefully successful season. “This summer has been great”, said Racey. “Seven of our top eight guys have had very good summers and look much better than they did this time last year.” The talent is there to bring back a trophy from Peoria. Returning all-state runner Kyle Gibson had a good track season and should be up towards the front this fall. Jon Newman has been the big surprise, having a break out track season and looks to continue that in cross country. Dan Harper looks to have recovered from a track injury and should be able to run step for step with Gibson, similar to early last year. David McWilliams and Mike Herbert will be a big part of the Huskies’ success> Herbert PR’ed with a 4:21 in the 1600 and McWilliams keeps getting better day by day. Watch for Tyler Jermann. This super soph ran 9:39 in track and is on the same pace as Gibson was last year. David Racey’s teams traditional run with a tight pack and this year will be no exception. If this team can say healthy, especially Harper, this squad will be tough to beat.

Major Meet Schedule:
9/8 Lake Park Invite
9/15 Peoria Notre Dame Invite

Rob Puetkammer SR, Joe Gasca JR, Sam Robinson SO, Ryan Stopinski SR, Shawn Pukas JR, Evan Porta JR, Jeff Smith SR, Daniel Gebar SO, Patrick Foley SO.

Outlook: Mark Battista has graduated, but the cupboard is not bare for Coach John Taylor. There is a possibility that there will be no seniors amongst the top 7…but talent could trump experience in this case. Junior Ethan Simmons will lead this team. If this team develops, they will have an outside chance of making it down state.

William Toohey SO, Matt Miller JR, Martin Grady SO, Patrick McGillen SR, Brian Barron JR, Michael Yerkes JR, Matt Shannon SO.

Outlook: 4 Runners return from last year’s state squad for Coach John Polka. “We will be a young team with 4 out of 7 being juniors or sophomores,” said Polka. Senior Ryan Shannon, off of a good track season, will be asked to lead this young squad. Juniors Tom Laser, Brian Barron, Jack Boyle, and Matt Miller comprise a tight pack time-wise for the Friars. Also Watch for Sophomore Martin Grady to be in the hunt for the top 5. Will be in contention for the Chicago Catholic League Championship and have the possibility of a state berth.

Patrick Geoghegan SR (74th, 15:16). Emmett Boblick SO, Cody Hague JR, Alexander Brown SO, Timothy Watts SR, Samuel Patterson JR. Kevin Binnas JR, Kevin Binder SO, Clayton Kirk SO.

Outlook:
Patrick Geoghegan improved by leaps and bounds this last track season. He will be the main man for Coach Jose Sosa’s team this fall. Sophomore Emmett Boblick and Junior Samuel Patterson will need to step up for success for OPRF.

Tyler Stierwalt SR, Ben Chapman SR, Jose Mendez SO, Lee Wise JR, Josh Parkinson JR, Blake Harris JR.

Outlook: This could be a tough year for O’Fallon. Jon Burnett lost 4 runners due to graduation plus lost 3 other runners to out of state transfers to other schools. “This summer we had the best training regimen as a team that we ever had since I have been at O’Fallon,” said Burnett. He will look for leadership from his two remaining runners from last year’s team Luke Sanchez and Nathan Ebrecht. Senior Tyler Steirwalt could be another runner to step up. Matt Coon, a military transfer from Japan, could step up. Burnett expects him to be in his top 5. Also watch for Freshman Michael Scolarici to contribute. Burnett expects his freshman class to be strong and look to contribute on the varsity.

Major Meet Schedule:
9/1 Granite City Invite
9/8 Peoria Woodruff Invite
9/16 Hazlewood Invite MO
9/23 Springfield Invite
9/29 LaDue MO Invite
10/6 Centralia Invite

Orland Park Sandburg
Coach: John O’Malley
2006 Finish: 4th Class AA State Meet

Returnees: Mike Marbach SR (106th, 15:30). Zach Dahleen JR, Elliot Hevel JR, Kyle McNicholas JR, Corey Puckett SR, Jake White SR, Bill Hindermann SR, Kyle Meyer SO, Dennis O’Flaherty JR, Adam Prenotis JR.

Outlook: After losing 6 runners to graduation from his 4th place team, Coach John O’Malley looks to reload. “It’s an entirely new challenge this year,” said O’Malley. “Last year we had a very veteran team with a lot of pressure to make a run at the state trophies and this year we have very little experience and I can’t imagine a lot of people are expecting us to do a whole lot.” Senior Mike Marbach will be the #1 for Sandburg. He has the experience to lead this squad and also the chance to be in the top 25. Junior Zach Dahleen track performance in the spring is indicative of his continuing improvement and hard work. Cory Puckett has worked hard over the summer and could surprise people, if he keeps his intensity according to O’Malley. Sandburg’s fate comes down to what sectional they fall in. If they get a favorable draw, this young team could be racing in November.

Major Meet Schedule:

Returnees:
Mat Smoody SR (12th, 14:35), Kevin O’Brien SR (95th, 15:25), Alex Mourosias SR (108th, 15:31), Eddie Lopez SR (159th, 15:51), Tom Laskowske JR (198th, 16:11).
Juan Perez JR, Paul Kwok SR, Lewis Conley SR, Alec Bollman SO, Adam Bethke JR, Jeffrey Larson SO, Andrew Kretschmer SR, Mitchell Grubner SO, Matthew Baran JR, Vlad Novikov JR, Colin Morlock JR, Lukasz Kierys JR.

Outlook:
Chris Quick knows how the late comedian Rodney Dangerfield felt like…NO RESPECT! “It seems we are getting lost in the shuffle a bit,” stated Quick. “That’s okay…we think we will field another strong team. Mat Smoody is the heart of the team. The defending 800 Meter Champion has improved his strength and could challenge for a state championship, if he keeps adding strength according to Quick. Senior Kevin O’Brien is the key to the team. If he does not get injured last fall, Palatine could have brought back another trophy home. He is a big meet performer. Alex Mourosias will be in the top 5. A runner that does not have that much leg speed, but he thrives in cross country races. Eddie Lopez had a dismal track season, coming from wrestling in Mid-march. But his summer has been good and could be a surprise in Pirate-Nation. The one sophomore Quick expects to step up is Alec Bollman. “He has the goods to be phenomenal,” said Quick. Sophomore Jeff Larson had a brother who ran on the trophy team and has the same love to run. Also watch for Chano Bernando, a sophomore who is 50/50 between Cross Country and Soccer. If he decides to run, he could be in the top 5 by the end of the year. This team has slipped through the cracks from some of the fans over the summer. This is a team that will be tough come the end of October and into November.

Major Meet Schedule:
9/1 Hinsdale Central/South Invite
9/15 Peoria Notre Dame Invite
9/22 Palatine Invite
10/6 St. Charles East Invite
10/13 MSL @ Palatine

Dennis Baliga SR, Shawn Ferguson SR, John Liddell JR, Tommy Pilcher SR, Adam Johannes JR, Taylor Haefle JR. Mark Saul SO, Peter Johnson SO, Caleb Westholder SO, Kevin Mueller JR, Nate Gibbins JR, Skip Grinnell SO.

Outlook: A good team…Terry Gano has six runners returning from a squad that ran well most of the season and did not have a great performance at Sectionals. Dennis Baliga is one of the best runners in the NIC-10 and will lead this squad. Gano will also need Senior Shawn Ferguson and Senior Tommy Pilcher step up and be more consistent. A 40 -50 1 -5 split will lead many great things for Auburn.

Rockford Jefferson

Returnees: Matt Johnson SR, Aaron Kleczkowski SR, Devon Delmore SO, Tyler Winger SO, Arnold Syphommarath SO, Mike Nunez JR, Robert Zadek JR, Andrew Brown JR.

Andy Schuck JR, Anthony Magaruh SR, Jason Schuff SO, Daniel Rohrer SR, Chase Prieve JR, Jordan Wessler JR.

Outlook:
Mark McLarty lost his top 2 runners Ryan Jacobs and Robert Anderson to graduation. But this team will again be good and challenge for another state meet berth. Junior Matt Brinkmeier should step up and lead this squad along Sophomore Kevin Jacobs. McLarty will need Seniors Tommy Farrell and Craig Worrall to step up to solidify their top 5. Also watch for Sophomores Jacob Schoff, Blake Miglin, Jordan Breese and Junior Andy Schuck to step up to challenge for the top 7. “I would like to see our top 5 have an average of under 15:30 and maybe get a couple of guys dipping under 15 by the end of season,” said McLarty.

Major Meet Schedule:

9/1 Leavey Invite @ St. Charles East
9/8 Peoria Woodruff Invite
9/15 Forest City Invite
9/22 Palatine Invite

Returnees: Scott Sparkman SR (162nd, 15:52), Topher Leiby JR (214th, 16:21), Justin Begyn SR (244th, 17:03).
Aubrey Barnes SO, James Henderson SR, John Gaffney SR, Teighlor Echols JR, Zach Payton SO, Justin Booker SO, Owen Porinjie SO.

Outlook: David Terronez returns for his second stint in coaching the Rocks after coaching the last couple of years at Bettendorf, Iowa. Terronez returns 3 runners from last year’s team that ran in state. He does not have the services of #1 returnee Junior Travis Anderson, who decided not to come out for the squad. The main emphasis this year will be on pack running with Senior Scott Sparkman leading the way. Also watch for Topher Leiby and Justin Begyn to be with him.

Major Meet Schedule:

9/1 Pleasant Valley IA Invite
9/8 Peoria Woodruff Invite
9/15 Geneseo Invite
9/22 Rock Island Invite
9/29 Alleman Invite
10/6 Sterling Invite

Roselle Lake Park
Coach: Lance Murphy
2006 Finish: 11th Class AA St. Charles North Sectional

Outlook:
A team that one coach that I talked to says could be one of the surprise teams in state. Coach Lance Murphy returns all 7 from last year’s team. Junior Craig Watson had an outstanding year for a sophomore and could be one of the top runners for the Lancers. This team runs a tight spit…sometimes between 15 -20 seconds. The key will be if one of these runners will step up to challenge the big guns and the split can remain minimal.

Major Meet Schedule:

9/1 Early Bird Classic @ Fenton
9/8 Lake Park Invite
9/15 Peoria Notre Dame Invite
9/22 Janesville Craig WI Invite
9/29 Niles West Invite
10/6 Wheeling Invite

St. Charles East
Coach: Al Edgecombe
2006 Finish: 15th Class AA St. Charles North Sectional

Returnees: Joe Mushrush SR, John Deutsch SR, Patrick Matthews SR, Jordan Heggen SO, David Arends SR, Michael Faith SO. Brad LeDuc SO, Jared Ends SO, Michael Richlak SR, Nick Cramer JR, Matt Kablusek JR, Jason Wandrey JR.

Outlook: The Saints return 6 runners from a team that looks to improve from a 15th place sectional finish last fall. Seniors Joe Mushrush, Dave Arends, and Patrick Matthews had good track seasons and look for improvement in track. John Deutsch has improved over the summer. Some of the success of the team will depend on how Sophomores Jordan Heggen, Michael Faith, and Brad LeDuc develop. Edgecombe plans to keep the sophs down until the beginning of October, so we could see a vast improvement from this team at that time.

Major Meet Schedule:

9/1 Leavey Invite @ St Charles East
9/8 Peoria Woodruff Invite
9/15 Downers South Invite
9/22 Palatine Invite
10/6 Best Invite @ St Charles East
10/13 Upstate Eight @ Lake Park

St. Charles North

Coach: Steve Imig
2006 Finish: 2nd Class AA State Meet

Returnees:
Scott Speare SR (26th, 14:52), Chris DeSilva SR (28th, 14:53), Max Clink JR (83rd, 15:21), Matt Miller JR (157th, 15:50).
Steven Miller JR, Rhett Morici SR, Todd Vanderkhoff JR, Mike Strasser SR, Pat Manser SR, Mike Young SR, Tim McDowell JR, Brad Wheeler SO, TJ Van Heil JR, Will Navaralsky SO.

Outlook: Steve Imig becomes the 3rd coach for the St. Charles North program in the last 3 years, but supporters of the team should not be worried. There is a great foundation from a squad that was runner-up to York in AA last fall. Seniors Scott Speare and Chris DeSilva just missed out on individual all state honors last fall…..don’t bet on them missing this fall. Max Clink is a talented Junior that is just discovering how good he can be. From reports that I have received, Senior Rhett Morici seems to be recovered from an injury that has hampered his progress and coach give the North Stars a much needed boost. Juniors Matt and Steven Miller will be fighting for a Top 5 spot, as will Senior Mike Strasser, if he can stay healthy. If the runners adjusts to Imig’s training philosophy, then the North Stars will challenge Neuqua Valley and Waubonsie Valley in a tough Upstate Eight…and state.

Major Meet Schedule:

9/1 Leavey Invite @ St Charles East
9/8 Peoria Woodruff Invite
9/15 Downers South Invite
9/22 Palatine Invite
9/29 St Charles North Invite
10/6 Aurora West Invite
10/13 Upstate Eight @ Lake Park

Pat Leskiewicz SO, Nick Penev SR, Phil Allman JR, Chris Gomez JR, Jay McNamara JR, Ben Heitkotter JR, Ryan Humphries JR, Ryan McMahon JR, Blake Breda SO, Dan Bundurski JR.

Outlook: The Saxons look to rebound after losing two all-state runners from their 3rd place squad. “Our goal, as always, is to compete for the MSL title and qualify for state,” said long time Schaumburg Coach Jim Macnider. Senior Nathan Rutz looks to lead the team at the beginning of the season, but watch for super-soph Pat Lesiewicz to be up there challenging. Both runners have the potential to be all-state in the top 25. Senior Brian Burkhart has made a steady improvement over the summer and will surprise a lot of people. Also watch for Jay McNamara and Phil Allman to step in. Schaumburg rarely has freshman contribute to the varsity, but Coach Macnider has a stud in waiting. Freshman Travis Morrison ran 4:54 for 1600 last spring on “15 miles” a week! “He is as gifted as a runner as I have ever coached”, said Macnider. Watch for this frosh to contribute by mid-season. This squad will be tough come Mid-October, but will they have enough to get out of the ultra-tough Schaumburg Sectional?

Outlook: Nate Roe has a load of talent returning from a team that placed 10th last year in AA. Returning All-Stater Chase Kadlec leads this group. Kadlec is the front runner that the Falcons need to contend. There is a pack of 4 runners that traded positions during last season and are the core to this squad. Senior Colin Christensen had a good track season running 9:33 for 3200. Graham Farnsworth broke through in a major way in the 800 and looks to be closer to Kadlec this fall. Ryan Mademann will need to step up with some more consistency to give the boost that Roe will need. Also look for Seniors Brian Schick, Andrew Kaehr (a converted hurdler), and T.J. Luby to have a say in the Top 7. This is a veteran squad with high expectations. “Our team goal is to be in the Top 5, but I believe we have a special group here,” said Roe. “I’d love to top or equal our 1976 team finish!” (Wheaton North finished 2nd in Class AA in 1976).

Seniors Ken Diedrich, Mark Swakow, Norbert Gajos and Junior Eric Rodriguez to be the core of this team. Also watch for Senior Toni Segura…he has been injured the last two years. Outlook: Dan Seeburg will have to reload after losing all everything Tm Robbins and Matt Heintz to graduation. Dan Steinfels may be the leader of the Ramblers, but watch for Sophomore Mark Donohue to be the #1 man by October. Will have to keep a tight pack if they want to win the Chicago Catholic League.

Winnetka New Trier
Coach: Dave Wisner
2006 Finish: 16th Class AA State Meet

Returnees:
Mike Schmidt SR (47th, 15:05), Pat Morris SR (204th, 16:13). Noah Garboys SO, Drew Hanson SR, Dan Chun SR, Charlie Furse SR, Woddy Hines SR, Greg Colten JR, Sam Welch SR, Chris Smith JR, Will Carpenter SR, Sean Van Horn JR, Ryan McElheine JR, Robert Brower SR, Paul Helmer JR, Shane Kennedy SO.

Outlook: The Trevians lost the core of their team to graduation, but will look to have a good season. Senior Mike Schmidt is recovered from a track injury and looks to be one of the top 20 runners in the state. Pat Morris had a good cross country season last fall and will be the leader of the pack behind Schmidt. Also watch for Senior Charlie Furse and Sophomore Noah Graboys to step up immediately. Coach David Wisner is high on Freshman Evan Thoma. He has a lot of talent, but not experience. Come the beginning of October, we should see him in their Top 7. “Las season, only 30-40 seconds separated our Top 7,” said Wisner. “If we can get that time difference (this fall) down to 1:20 or less, we will beat some very good teams.”

Individual Spotlight – Class 3A

Tom Achtien *** Senior *** Elmhurst York
8th – 14:30
Third returnee from last year’s state meet. A very hard worker according to legendary York Coach Joe Newton. Ran 4:16.21y / 9:07.4 in track last spring. Has been overlooked in the individual champion hunt for 2007…he should be able to push Havel and Derrick.

Greg Adelman *** Junior *** Geneva
89th – 15:23
Should be one of the top runners for the Vikings this fall. Has fully recovered from an illness that forced him from participating from track last spring. “Greg Adelman is alive, kicking, and running with us”, stated Geneva coach Bob Thomson. Along with Andrew Nelson, Greg should be one of the top runners in the Western Sun Conference as well as state-wide.

Matt Barns *** Senior *** Barrington
88th – 15:23
A runner that grew in leaps and bounds last fall, should be the #1 man for Barrington.

Pete Casa *** Senior *** Wheaton-Warrenville South
50th – 15:05
Could be All-State by season’s end….ran 9:41 for 3200 Meters last fall. Has that mental toughness that will take him to the next level.

Adam Cecil *** Sophomore *** Elmhurst York
Could be one of the biggest suprises in the state this fall. Cecil’s improvement from cross country to track was dramatic, running 4:35y / 9:42. “He doesn’t care what is happening around him….he puts his head down and runs”, said York Coach Joe Newton. Adam could be one of the reasons that the Dukes challenge for a 6th straight team championship.

Collin Christensen *** Senior *** Wheaton North
70th – 15:15
“Collin is one of my hardest, most consistent trainers”, stated Wheaton North Coach Nate Roe. Christensen had a good track season, running 9:33.89. Correlated with a good summer of running, Colin should be chasing all state honors.

Max Clink *** Junior *** St. Charles North
83rd – 15:21
Max ran 1:55.96 in the 800…very talented junior that is on the tip of greatness. It will help him in his growth that he gets to train with teammates Scott Speare and Chris DeSilva.

Stephen Couch *** Senior *** Naperville Central
Illness towards the end of last fall hampered Stephen’s progress. In result he and his team did not make it out of a tough Hinsdale Central Regional. Rebounded in track by running 4:17.2 for 1600. He could be one of the top runners in the state if he just stays healthy.

Brian Denk *** Senior *** Darien Hinsdale South
109th – 15:32
Brian had a great breakthrough season in track last spring running 4:28.2 / 9:27.3 at the Lyons Township Sectional .He is one of the main reasons Hinsdale South will be one of the top teams in the state this fall. Brian is a smart runner…”A true student of the sport”, said long time Hornet Coach Dave Jackson.

Chris Derrick *** Senior *** Naperville Neuqua Valley
3rd – 14:22
One of the top returning runners in the nation, Chris threw down some great times (4:19.18, 8:54.64) last spring. “What makes Chris one of the great ones”, said Neuqua Valley Coach Paul Vandersteen, “is not so much his ability to run well, but his ability and desire to lead others in a positive way.” With his leadership, Derrick is the main reason that Neuqua Valley is the pre-season favorite in Class 3A.

Chris DeSilva *** Senior *** St. Charles North
28th – 14:53
In only his second season of cross country running, I think DeSilva is on the brink of greatness this fall. Chris ran 9:24.54 and 4:16.65 in track. Has the strength and speed to be one of the top runners in the state.

Rich Eber *** Senior *** Chicago Brother Rice
195th – 16:08
Did not run his best race last fall, but Rich has the talent to run towards the front. Eber had a good spring, running 9:25.6 in the 3200. “Rich will be a competitive runner as long as he runs his race”, said Brother Rice Coach Don Molenda.

Graham Farnsworth *** Senior *** Wheaton North
68th – 15:14
A great team runner…ran 1:56.43 in the 800 and 4:27.42 in the 1600 last spring. “He’s already doubled the amount of mileage he ran the last two summers and is looking great”, said North Coach Nate Roe. He is primed to have a great cross country season.

Patrick Geoghegan *** Senior *** Oak Park – River Forest
74th – 15:16
Had a major improvement in track running 9:21.67 for 3200 meters and 4:21.60 for 1600 meters. Has the confidence to be a major “player” on the state-wide stage.

Kyle Gibson *** Junior *** Naperville North
16th – 14:42
Kyle had a great season last year and is one of the top returnees in Class 3A. Ran 9:26.0 in the 3200 last spring…A great leader for Coach David Racey: “He puts the team first and will do anything to help the team reach their potential.” Gibson had a great summer of running according to Racey. One of the reasons why the Huskies will be up front team-wise this fall.

Dan Harper *** Senior *** Naperville North
86th – 15:22
Is the key for Naperville North this fall if he can stay healthy. Dan had some injury problems last fall and during track season, broke his big toe in a non-running related injury. “I think he has a good shot at being all-state,” said David Racey, Naperville North Coach. Is tough mentally and along with Kyle Gibson, gives the Huskies a great 1-2 punch.

Kevin Havel *** Senior *** Arlington Heights Hersey
2nd – 14:12
Top returning runner from last year’s state meet, now it’s Kevin’s turn to shine. Havel is fully recovered from an IT-Band injury that slowed him down the last 6 weeks of track last spring (4:14.24i, 9:00.3). He is ready to run some great times this fall. “He certainly is focused on State, but really feels angry that he fell way short in Foot Locker last fall,” said Hersey Coach Tim Phillips. “That has driven him ever since last fall.”

Tyler Jermann *** Sophomore *** Naperville North
Was a huge surprise in the track season, running 9:39.8 in the 3200 as a freshman. Tyler should be one of the top 5 for the Huskies this fall. “Right now, he is ahead of where Gibson was at this time last year,” stated North Coach David Racey. “If his performances follow that path, that makes our team that much better.”

Chase Kadlec *** Senior *** Wheaton North
21st – 14:46
Chase had a great summer of running and the State should watch out. “I would consider him a top-5 guy in the state”, said Coach Nate Roe. “He knows how to come through when it counts and really wants to help his team reach new heights.” Had a good track season running 9:25.42 in the 3200. I think he has a lot left to show this fall.

Neal Klein *** Senior *** Streamwood
45th – 15:04
A guy that has flown under the radar for many on-lookers this summer, Klein could be a surprise in State this fall. Neal ran 9:36.12 last spring in the 3200.

Pat Leskiewicz *** Sophomore *** Schaumburg
Last fall, Coach Jim Macnider told me that he thinks that Pat could be one of the best runners ever in the Saxon program. His spring performances (4:31 in the 1600, 9:40.8 in the 3200) back up that claim. Should be one of the top runners for this Schaumburg squad this fall.

Emmett Lorenz *** Junior *** Aurora Waubonsie Valley
67th – 15:13
Great pack runner along with classmate Ryan Shea, Lorenz will be a key reason why the Warriors will challenge for a state championship. Has great finishing speed, ran 1:59 in the open 800 last spring.

Jon Newman *** Senior *** Naperville North
82nd – 15:21
Gained a lot of confidence during last cross country season, according to his Coach David Racey. Newman ran 4:21.9 in the 1600 last spring. “Each season, he has steadily improved”, added Racey. Is a key cog to the success of the Huskie running machine this fall.

Kevin O’Brien *** Senior *** Palatine
95th – 15:25
Keep an eye on this runner. He detests track in the spring (so his times are not there), he’s on the swim team. “OB” ran 14:51 on Palatine’s home course last fall to have the 3rd fastest time for a Pirate runner at Deer Grove East (behind Finley and Smoody). Kevin was injured at the end of last season with an IT-Band injury. His injury was probably the reason Palatine did not get a trophy last year according to Coach Chris Quick. Could be tough, tough, tough this fall.

Danny Pawola *** Junior *** Naperville Neuqua Valley
135th – 15:42
The break through runner of last spring, Danny’s times were amazing (4:25.26 for 1600, 9:16.5 for 3200) considering he ran 15:42 at Det last fall. “He is learning how to train consistently without overdoing it,” said Coach Paul Vandersteen. “His commitment is as strong as I have ever seen at his age.” Could be flirting with a Top-5 finish come State Meet time.

Matthew Perez *** Junior *** Hoffman Estates

81st – 15:20
Matthew is finally healthy and it showed in track running 9:33.77 for 3200 meters. One of the reasons that Hoffman Estates will be chasing the Mid Suburban League crown.

Jim Riddle *** Senior *** Naperville Neuqua Valley
20th – 14:45
Had a great season last fall, but dropped off in Track due to an injury. “He has been smart about not trying to do too much too soon”, said Neuqua Coach Paul Vandersteen. Riddle is part of a strong 3-headed monster that could bring this “young” school its first state championship.

Josh Roig *** Junior *** Bloomington
94th – 15:25
A promising runner that had his track season cut short due to a stress fracture. Will challenge as one of the top runners in Central Illinois.

Ron Revord *** Senior *** Frankfort Lincoln-Way East
79th – 15:19
Ron had a great summer of training and it will help that he is running with Troester and Scott-Stirn. Ran 9:46.46 in track…has the potential for greater things in cross country.

Nathan Rutz *** Senior *** Schaumburg
69th – 15:15
Should be the lead man for the Saxons this fall. He had a great summer. “I believe that he will be a contender for a Top 25 finish at the State Meet”, said Coach Jim Macnider. Had a good track season, running 9:46.4 for 3200 meters.

Mike Schmidt *** Senior *** Winnetka New Trier
47th – 15:05
Could be at the top this fall in every race he is in. Had an injury riddled spring with a stress fracture. Still he ran 9:47 for 3200 meters. “I believe we made the right decision (to hold Mike out of Track Sectionals)”, said Trevian Coach Dave Wisner. “He is way ahead of where he was last year at this time.”

David Schumacher *** Senior *** Aurora Waubonsie Valley
51st – 15:06
Mark Schumacher *** Senior *** Aurora Waubonsie Valley
40th – 14:59
Great leaders for a team that could bring home a trophy to Aurora this fall. “This is what has been the difference between this team and previous teams,” said Assistant Coach Kevin Rafferty. “We haven’t had team leaders that have demanded their teammates be as committed as they are.” Mark’s times dropped from 9:44 to 9:27 in the 3200 last spring, while David’s time dropped from 10:03 to 9:28. Watch fro them in the Top 15 at the State Meet.

Myles Scott-Stirn *** Senior *** Frankfort Lincoln-Way East
27th – 14:52
Myles had a great track season running 4:18.58…will be one of the top runners in the state.

Ryan Shea *** Junior *** Aurora Waubonsie Valley
54th – 15:09
This Waubonsie Junior is primed to have a great season. He did not have a good season…injured in February and his time suffered in the spring according to Assistant Coach Kevin Rafferty. Ran 9:48.45 for 3200 meters.

Mat Smoody *** Senior *** Palatine

12th – 14:35
The defending AA 800 Meter Champion is the 4th returning runner from last year’s State Meet. Along with his 1:51.8 800 Meter last spring, Mat ran 4:11.78 for 1600 Meters and 9:37.7 for 3200 Meters. “Mat has the talent to challenge for the individual title, but he needs to keep adding strength,” said Coach Chris Quick. Is tough mentally and could surprise people at Detweiller, a course suited to his speed.

Scott Speare *** Senior *** St. Charles North
26th – 14:51
A great runner with talent that will lead St Charles North back to the top. Scott ran 4:24.47 for 1600 meters and 9:30.19 in the 3200 meters.

Erik Stanton *** Junior *** Arlington Heights Hersey
105th – 15:30
Erik had a great month of May running 1:58 in the 800 and 4:19.6 in the 1600. If this can be translated to a 15 minute cross country race, we could see some great things from this Junior.

Josh Stein *** Senior *** Aurora Marmion Academy

53rd – 15:08
Out of graduated David Grange’s shadow, this senior will be in the hunt for the Top 25. Ran 9:26.53 last spring.

Steve Sulkin *** Junior *** Elmhurst York
15th – 14:41
The 5th returnee from last year’s state meet, this York Junior did not run with the Varsity until Regionals. Had a great track season running 4:25.87 and 9:25.33. Could be one of the best according to Coach Joe Newton.

Mark Talbot *** Senior *** Elmhurst York

A converted soccer player running in his 2nd full cross country season, Talbot showed that he has the talent to run with the front runners. The question will be whether he is willing to “pay the price” to get to the next level and possibly a Top 25 finish.

Nathan Troester *** Senior *** Frankfort Lincoln-Way East
33rd – 14:56
Had a great indoor season in track running 4:20 for 1600 meters. Part of a talented trio at East that could all become all-state.

Lee Vlcek *** Senior *** Darien Hinsdale South
46th – 15:04
Had a good track season running 9:32.6 for 3200 Meters. A nice hard working young man according to his coach Dave Jackson. Strong runner that can be flirting with the Top 25 at State.

Bill Wisser *** Senior *** Arlington Heights Hersey
36th – 14:58
Talented runner is a great side-kick to teammate Kevin Havel. Had a great track season running 4:28.6 for 1600 meters and 9:23.7 for 3200 meters. Has looked great through the summer. All Coach Tim Phillips wants of Wisser is to “be at his best at State.”
